As for fridge recycling rules, you have to beat the man to it! When my fridge went on the blink a few months ago, last year!, I hopped on my bike and went around the city pinching the parts out of all of the discarded fridges on the streets, managed to get it going until the correct parts came. SC is possibly South Carolina, USA, USA tallys with the 1/4 thread.

The timer thing is probably a defrost timer, it'll periodically shut the cooling off so any ice can melt off the coil. The Klixon will trip if the compressor is seized and pulls LRA (locked rotor amps), you get the characteristic 'hum-click' of a stuck compressor. It will also trip after a bit of run time if the compressor is pulling too many amps when running, finally it will also trip if the compressor body gets too hot.

From memory heart degrades the gas - has to work harder - more heat and round it goes 🥺
