The going down hill thing: I’m thinking the brake lights illuminate because the car is doing what we would do in an ICE - that is, applying the brake to prevent gaining speed downhill. It’s logical in that case, for the brakes to illuminate even though you’re not losing speed.

In an ICE car I use the gears to keep a consistent speed going down long grades. I don't need to touch the brakes to keep a consistent speed. So no, brake lights don't come on when you are utilizing engine braking. The IONIQ should do the same.

An ICE will not gain speed going downhill. I take my foot off the accelerator and the car slows down. Steeper hills require downshifting. Steep 18% grades would require the brakes, of course.

​@@kevinr- sure they do. Yes there is engine braking, but it comes with audio clues that would signal to other drivers somewhat if it was as extreme as regen can be. E.g. you've changed from 5th to 2nd (a bloody bold move that, may your clutch and gearbox rest in peace) to ensure you don't need to hit your brakes on a downhill. Your engine revs will be so high as to be clearly audible to drivers around you. Now would I hit the brakes on a slight decline on a motorway? No, but then that amount of engine braking would likely be similar to level 1 regen. Point here is that people should be using their regen adjustments in a similar manner to how people would use their gears in a vehicle to control their speed. Oh and brake lights coming on with HDA maintaining speed... yes, that's how every single cruise control works. That's not a hyundai thing, its a cruise control thing with ICE vehicles and EVs alike.

Great video but let me clear up one misconception. Except for when the car is in Regen Level 0, it will do regenerative braking not only when you release the accelerator but also when you push the brake pedal. It is perfectly fine to drive in, say, Level 1 and use the brakes like in a gas car and still get the benefit of regenerative braking in terms of saving power. And when doing so the brake lights will of course come on. The only reasons for using stronger regen levels is to avoid switching the foot over pedals often and if in Regen 3/Auto or iPedal have a better feel for what the maximum level of regeneration is and to decelerate the car accordingly and thus not waste power on braking.

Great video to show what actually happens under different conditions with the brake lights. Once the brake light update comes it would be nice to see the same processes as this video to understand how things change. However, I don’t think Hyundai should do what they want. A driver should not have to worry what kind of car they have in front of them so the I5 should be no different than any other car, at least any other EV that has regen. I understand an ICE car will be different because they all have the lights come on only when hitting the brake pedal. Going 70 in an ICE car and just taking your foot off the gas will not turn the brake on. However, all EVs should work the same as other EVs. When slowing down at an industry standard rate, that is decreasing speed by X over a period of Y seconds should cause the brake lights to come on where X and Y are the same for all EVs, not different depending on the manufacturer. If that is not the law right now, it certainly should be.

Excellent video answering a question that most EV drivers will have been asked I'm sure. You are right to say that Hyundai need to make a change when you are in Highway Drive Assist. They should be able to provide a software update so that when the car is actually delerating, above a certain level, the brake lights come on. If the car is not decelerating, or only doing so very gently, the brake lights should not come on as it gives a misleading signal to drivers behind you.

I assume the reasoning is that if you were in a gas car, you would have to apply the brakes to maintain constant speed when coasting down that hill. Maybe it's calibrated on the conservative side (to be "safe"), but it's not obvious that anything is completely off here. Realistically most people probably wouldn't ride the brakes down all the way like that since it would wear them out, but would just end up speeding up and slowing down unevenly.

I agree. When watching the video I kept thinking of my old gas car and how it would want to accelerate pretty fast going down a hill so I’d have to keep my foot on the breaks to maintain the desired speed. I'm glad to see break lights actually illuminate at level 3 regen. I was worried they don't illuminate at all unless the actual phisical break engages

I think the point here is when the car is controlling the speed. I agree that in a gas vehicle when the driver is controlling the speed, braking (and therefore brake lights illuminate) is less likely on slight declines but likely on steep declines. I know I let my car accelerate downhill and only brake when I feel the speed is getting excessive. I also agree that a car in front of me braking on a highway for no apparent reason is annoying because it causes me to become unnecessarily alert of that cars behavior. That being said, the highway brake light issue is when the car is in cruise control. When a gas car is in cruise control, it never illuminates the brake light to maintain speed. In fact, touching the brake to illuminate the lights takes you out of cruise control. So, as TIG said, having the brake lights come on in electric cruise control to maintain speed on level roads or to gently decelérate on slight declines is unnecessary and disturbing to the car behind you at best, and hazardous for everyone, at worst.

Here is a specific moment when I'm not sure what my brake lights are doing. When approaching my home street, I'm driving down a fairly steep hill on a US highway with a speed limit of 45 mph ( meaning many people are driving 55 mph). I usually use the left regen paddle to go from level 2 regen down to I-Peddle when approaching my street, like I did in the 1960's driving a stick shift. Here's my question.... If I'm decelerating in I-Peddle but put my foot on the excelerator slightly as not to fully stop in the fast traffic, does the light pressure on the gas peddle turn off the brake light?

Agreed. Downhill, the car is in effect braking to maintain the set speed - hence the lights.

With ICE cars you can/should use engine braking to keep a consistent speed going down hill. No brakes needed. You can keep your car at speed limit going down any steep grade if you downshift your car. Keeps your brakes in good shape and keeps from having big traffic "accordions" from happening. You can always tell drivers who don't regularly drive in the mountains by their brake lights coming on every 5 seconds. If you are keeping a consistent speed, your brake lights should not come on. If you are slowing down then yes they should. Regen should act like engine braking on an ICE car.

I don’t about the US but in Canada they just used the same regulation that was adopted for manual cars in regards at what point the lights come on. It is a set deceleration point.

Thanks for this video, it clarifies the brake light behaviour. It's crazy that in ipedal, you have to have your foot right off the accelerator to get the brake light to come on (even though you can slow quite quickly with just a touch on the pedal), yet in the same scenario in HDA, the lights come on way too easily. It looks to me that in HDA, the brake lights come on whenever there's any amount of regen happening. I hope they fix this soon, and not just in the USA.

I personally only use the paddles to regen , I have found when in regen around town it feels like it takes more power to move the car. Has a little dragging feel and taking more energy to more the car.

In my Honda e, the little car in the driver's display shows what lights are on, I find that pretty genious. You know when you're braking, when your headlights or blinkers are on, just by watching the car in the "odometer".

Thanks for the great video, I saw the ICCU video recently and scheduled an appointment for September 28. Thanks again!! Just called my dealer to add the brake light logic update and the service advisor added to the appointment. I’ve dealt with this individual awhile back and he’s not to swift about things. When I asked about any recalls that comes up and he said “If it’s in for service, any recalls that do exist will be taken care of” I just don’t trust what he said due to past experiences . I won’t mention names or the dealer. I’m the type of person who doesn’t like to get people in trouble.

Going downhill with cruise control on, it makes sense that your taillights would be on to maintain a set speed. I don't see this being an issue with regen lights braking trying to maintain speed, would be the same if you had to do it manually. Excellent Video.

Just playing devil's advocate, if the brake lights were off and the car was maintaining speed downhill, then the car behind, now coasting faster and faster, would be expecting your IONIQ 5 to do the same. Even though you have no brake lights they will be getting closer. Confusion would ensue. Better to err on the side of safety. What do other cars do in cruise control on a hill?

You can see on your dash the car is in regen, even though you are maintaining constant speed in HDA. You’d probably have to use the brakes to maintain speed like the car is doing. 10:26

I had the same thought. If I were in my regular car, to maintain speed down hill, I'd have to hit the breaks. If I just fully remove my foot from the break, I would be accelerating, not maintaining my speed. So, I don't think the downhill driving is horribly wrong. I live in a mountainous area, so I'm thinking pretty steep grades though

I would suppose, however, that H could adjust the software to work the way Corbin suggests, and that would arguably be better in terms of communication with the following car.

Great video, but can you tell me how an ICE vehicle would react going down the same hill while in cruise control...or even out of cruise control? Depending on how steep the grade is, I would think that any vehicle may need to apply some braking in order to maintain a constant speed. For instance, in my plug-in hybrid, going down a particular steep stretch of highway requires me to ride the brake all the way down, or the speed of the car will increase above the posted speed limit if I allow it to coast. So I'm not finding it unusual for Ioniq to "brake" going down a steep grade while in cruise control...aka "Highway Drive Assist". I also purchased an Ioniq 6 recently but have not taken it down that same stretch of highway yet.

Coming from driving a LEAF, the regen is much different. I like to be able to freewheel/ coast for even more efficiency, so I find my self in Auto most often. I can still use the paddle to regen on demand, and it applies regen when I lightly press the break pedal. I wish there were more modes that used the break pedal to regen to the full amount before actuating the break pads. That seems most efficient.

Thank you for doing these tests and creating this video. It answered the questions I had from your first video on brake lights (questions about auto regen, cruise control). I use auto regen more than any other mode, it is good to know that cars behind me get a warning when I'm slowing down. I'm curious how you filmed the brake lights you put into the image during the highway drive part of this video. I couldn't use the camera in my EV6 to watch the brake lights because it turns off at 12 mph. I'm probably going to have to do like you said and disable cruise control if the highway is hilly. I hope Kia fixes this soon.

It’s funny you mention the left paddle as a trick or secret. I’m coming from a Bolt where that’s all the left paddle is for, so when I test drove the Ioniq 6, I assumed it would do the same, which it did.

The idea is that at low speeds you are likely in a line of traffic at an intersection and everyone can see you slowing. If you are slowing and creeping like in a construction zone and a car comes fast upon you...if they can't see YOU and the rest of the stopped traffic, they are going to hit you brake lights or no brake lights.

Thanks for the video. I have a 2023 EV6 GT line 2. I used car scanner and ODB2 dongle to monitor the brake light. My initial testing using HDA and adaptive cruise showed that stronger deceleration would initiate the brake lights. I was in auto mode and the brake light. I didnt see the kind of brake light activity(ie on and off as mentioned)that would be annoying to other drivers, at least in my opinion. This was only one test though so a small sample size. I will contine to test. I am setting up an audio tone when the brake lights activate

I was using a visual check in car scanner to confirm so admittedly I may have missed the braking. I set an audible tone based on a configured threshold for my next trip. That should be a little more conclusive

@@darrenrussell5046 Ok, I ran it again today. A couple of items of note that brake light on car scanner has a setting from 0 to 100. The default threshold was set to 40, a full depress of the brake was 45. Not sure what the units mean frankly so I reset the default notification to activate (visually and audibly) at 1 and above. Here is what I found. -I didn't see the brake light on excessively on the downhill. When there was stronger deceleration the brake light activated. It did stay on for a few seconds at time but there was no on-off that I would find annoying if I was driving behind. If there was no one in front of me, there was no brake light activation. -I did see something strange as I allowed the driver assist make the lane change. The brake light would come on during the lane change. 2 times out approximately 5, HDA lane changes I would get multiple brake light activations. When I took over the lane change there was no brake light activations so I think that eliminates a false reading when the turn indicator is activated. I tend not to use HDA lane, but given the potential for multple brake light activations I likely won't be using it at all. Not a big problem for me. I will continue to test to see if there and try to find out what the numbers on the brake light activation means.

Interesting, thank you for this video. I am an happy owner of a Kia EV6, since last march… Really love this car. For the regenerative breaks, i drive with de I-pedal. I would appreciate to add it in my driver’s settings… not possible i think.. so each time i have reset it…. Never use the auto mode… I am in canada, i like the Ioniq 5, but with snow, the positionning of the rear window, i did not consider it With my EV6, no problem in winter ( like Tesla, etc)…

Thank you for the update. I really appreciate all of your videos. It is taught me a lot about how to operate. My Hyundai ionic five I was wondering if you or anyone else who owns this Honda ionic five can help me. I recently did all the latest software update, including the eye, CCU, update and map navigation update. After the update World Cup was completed. I noticed that voice command to open the charging port door was not being received. The voice control seems to take every other command except that one in fact, when I try to open the charging port door, using that voice command, it's giving me a list of charging port station or telling me that it cannot hear me or does not understand before I did the Software Update everything worked just fine but now I have this problem I contacted Bluetooth which is supposed to get back to me, but also gave me the runaround I also contact Hyundai customer service as well as navigation solution. No one seems to have an answer for me and I would like this fixed as soon as possible so help help help help I appreciate all the feedback. Thank you.

Same behaviour on my EV6. At the moment the car regen, the breake lights turn on. I saw some drivers followed me by frustrated because of that, with reason. I think this is because of ICE vehicule software reuse on EV. On ICE vehicule, when using HDA, they slightly appy brake to keep speed. On EV, I think they should have the same beavior has level 1 when it's just to maintain speed.

In i-Pedal and using the left paddle the car will engage the brakes in order to come to a complete stop. So the brakes will blend in in those scenarios and turn on the brake lights should they not already be on. Hope you will redo this when you have the update installed.

Hi, your brake lights coming on if the car is slowing down...... and it is. If you refer to the right side indicator, the brake lights are on when the indicator shown the car is charging to certain degree. Meaning the car is slowing down using regen breaking, hence the lights are on

Great Video. I especially like the trick using the left paddle to slow the vehicle. I have the Genesis GV60. With the latest software update I am able to see when my brake likes are activated by looking at my center console. In the center console where you have the car image of your Ioniq5 and I have my Genesis car image, the little brake lights on the car image actually light up red when the rear brakes are activated. Will they being doing the same software update for the Ioniq5?

That highway brake problem is worse than annoying, it is dangerous. Following drivers may well assume you have a wiring fault and will not respond so quickly when you do brake for real. To my mind the car would not meet the UK construction and use regulations - it is inherently unsafe to be driving it. It needs fixing quickly and should never have been allowed to happen in the first place. Software programmers should not be making these decisions, it needs input from an experienced driver panel. And it needs proper independent testing.

Not sure there is anything truly wrong with brake lights being on going down a grade in HDA. If you were driving a car and were lightly using the brake pedal to maintain your spend going down hill in an ICE car the brake lights would also be one.

My other car is BMW i3 - it's very easy solved there - as soon as you hit a certain deceleration value - the brake lights go on. As you increase and hit a higher value - the brake lights flash. Both values are adjustable through coding. Not sure what Hyundai did there - way way to complicated. For the people behind you it's completely irrelevant what kind of braking mode you are in. They will just rear end you. Brake light on = decelerating.

But it’s not a regular car that doesn’t inherently gain speed. It’s more than capable of modulating a consistent speed without gaining or losing speed thus not necessitating brake lights. That’s a gas car problem that they don’t need to carry over into a new technology. It’s like the appendix. It once served a purpose but is no longer needed. Regenerative braking has eliminated the need that dragging brakes while going downhill once served.

Hi Ioniq guy! I follow you since i ordered my ioniq5 un march 2022. I just received my RWD small battery Ioniq 5 and i really love my new car!! That being said, i search how i can set up the regenerative brake level at "auto max" when i start my car. For now, when i start my car, it come back to the level 3 regen but not on "auto". Can you guide me on how the Ioniq 5 could remember my setting for regen?

Question about cruise control. Several times while driving on the Interstate while in cruise control the vehicle suddenly starts to decelerate. No other vehicles around. Has anyone else had this happen or do you have any reasons why it would happen. The dealership has not found any reason why it would happen

My guess is that they tried to emulate when a brake light would come on with a gas car. If I go down a hill on the highway in a gas car I would need to apply light brake pressure to maintain speed. Most people coast down the hill and actually gain speed. So I guess I get what Hyundai was shooting for here. I think the best fix would be to allow the car to drift above the set speed a few mph when coasting downhill so it doesn’t need to hold back. If a car is following you at 65 and your ionic holds speed going down the hill, then the car behind you will need to brake, which is why they probably made the decision they did.

Gasoline vehicles with manual transmissions when downshifted, can exhibit more aggressive braking (than an EV using regen), and the brake lights do not come on. If this is an issue then why is it never mentioned. Why is it only an issue for EV's?

Paddle (Shifter) Braking.. Do you find when you brake with the left paddle and the I5 comes to a complete stop, the acceleration or start out of the stopped position is jarring, in that the brake hold is really strong and the vehicle always needs to pop out of the brake hold. Its never a smooth acceleration out from the stop, similarly when you are in park and place it in drive or reverse, the brake hold is strong and you need to pop out of the hold position with a jarred takeoff as the brake releases?

I would expect to see break lights on every car when going downhill if you're trying to maintain speed. IMO if you're going downhill you'll naturally pick up speed, so you'd need to slow.

My opinion is the brake lights doing that with the cruise control on is ridiculous. You’re not slowing down. You’re just maintaining the same speed going down a hill. There’s absolutely no reason the brake lights should come on. So basically the whole brake light logic on these things is a pretty big mess except for the fact they come on when you press on the brake like any other car would. Hyundai needs to get off their butts and fix this immediately. It really makes me wonder about their engineering department with all these endless screw ups.

Of course the brake lights wont switch on in level 2 and above if you only go 5 mph because the regen effect is not there at this los speed. In i-pedal they will I suppose.

Kind of nitpicking I think. When I’m behind a car it doesn’t bother if they use their brakes. I don’t understand why this is a problem that needs fixing. I think it’s great that the break lights come on when going downhill, it lets the driver behind you to understand that you are maintaining your speed and not accelerating.

The problem is if you ride your brakes down a hill to maintain speed, you are not decelerating, but your brake lights are on. Then when you do need to decelerate, there is no change in brake light status. So the person behind you can't tell if you are slowing down or maintaining speed (other than by judging distance). In an ICE you should downshift your car to maintain your speed, then use the brake pedal when you need to decelerate. Plus it keeps your brakes cool.

When you say foots off the accelerator in I-Pedal, do you mean all the way off? Will the brake lights come on if you ease pedal off as you would when doing normal deceleration in I-pedal?

Yes, my foot is completely off. No they will not. The upcoming brake light software update will change some things and make it based on the amount of deceleration the vehicle experience. Stay tuned for that

I dont unterstand the brake lights with HDA either. Just badly programmed. I often have it that the brake lights are on with HDA and when I deactivate it I‘m in Regen Level 1 (no brake lights) and even have to accelerate a little. So really no need for the brake lights at that time.

Hi there So one thing i was hoping this video will cover is I-paddle , basically i-paddle is not full regeneration it’s combination of disk break and engine break in my opinion and I think it makes sense because engine does not have break system power to stop the car . Regarding break light does it still turn on when on level 3 on down hill while maintaining speed or only on level 0,1 and 2 turns on? Thanks

@theionicguy I just got the 2025 ionic 5 N and I’m having this exact problem. The brake light goes on when I take my foot off the gas or down shift when in the N Shift mode. It’s not using the g meter and as a result it will ride the brake light when I down shift at 40 with my foot is off the gas at -0.03g. Any ideas how to get Hyundai to address this? It makes me look like an idiot when driving to the person driving behind me as to them I’m constantly on the brake lights for no reason.

Yeah, it's really stupid the way they've implemented it. It may be time for me to revisit this topic. I just did a 1300 mile drive in a gas car through Pennsylvania and even on miles long steep grades, I didn't have to engage the brakes and light up the brake light. Had I been in my Ioniq 5 they would have been on for minutes at a time and tractor trailers would have been passing me non-stop to get around me thinking I actually am braking. People love to argue when I talk about it that in a gas car you would need to ride the brakes too. I don't know what gas cars people are driving but I can go down pretty steep hills without using the brakes and accelerating out of control while also not engaging brake lights. Back when the Ioniq 5 was first released, in iPedal, you could almost come to a complete stop without them engaging. Part of me longs for that but at the same time that was also a little dangerous.

Regenerative braking is not at all a new idea. It goes back at least to the 60's in a useful form. But it didn't catch on as it wasn't really needed.

The brake lights come on in HDA when going downhill because the regenerative braking is in use, as you can clearly see in the dashboard display. Shame you didn't mention which regen mode you were in, and also shame you didn't replicate the experiment without HDA.

Without cruise on and you had to manually hold 70 mph going down a hill you would naturally speed up unless you lightly applied the brakes which would in turn apply the brake lights the braking logic is just simulating what a human driver would do to maintain a constant speed going down hill, makes sent me.

Or you would downshift into a lower gear (even on an automatic transmission) and use engine braking to maintain speed rather than tax your brakes. People who live in the mountains do this all the time, particularly when going down long steep grades. In this scenario, no brake lights are coming on.

Perhaps they would gain more speed in a downwards incline and the force required to scrub off excess speed would cause the car to decelerate considerably on a level surface. You could test this by coasting down the same hills and seeing how much speed the car gains in a given timeframe.

I can't agree with this more! Nothing more annoying than someone riding their brakes down a long grade. If they ride their brakes then you can't tell if they are just maintaining speed or truly braking. In an ICE car you should downshift to maintain speed and not use your brakes, unless you are truly slowing down. The regen braking should act like downshifting. @@RangerMan2002
