I am a 15 year old and and i am walking to the local Youth Club on a warm summer evening back in 1967. As i walk past the houses i hear " Waterloo Sunset " blasting out through an open bedroom window, from someones record player. A memory i have kept until this day. This song is timeless.

I love this Kinks song, very melodic and sweet. Now that I've heard it, I'll be humming it for days 😵‍💫 According to Wiki, Waterloo is a district of London on the north side of the Thames River and the bridge crossing it is called Waterloo Bridge. I love the bands of the "British Invasion" era - Kinks,Animals, Who, Small Faces, and more - so much talent, creativity and innovation. We owe these guys so much. 1963-1973 is my favorite era of music. BTW- I just sent you an email with links to two songs by "Them'" another band form this era which featured Van Morrison as their lead singer. Iconic songs by a brilliant band.

A great comment, but i would like to correct you on one thing, the Waterloo district is on the South side of the River Thames. Part of the Borough of Lambeth. It might not seem important, but Londoners are a funny bunch, and after listening to this song since it was first released, those of us born in the area felt quite proud about it back then.

Waterloo station is very much in South London, The best song ever about London from the best English band ever. Never quite had the recognition in the USA they should and could have had because they wrote from and for a British perspective just like the Jam did a few years later.

Yes, Waterloo is a district in central London, part of the London Borough of Lambeth. It's located in the Waterloo and South Bank ward, about 1 mile east of Charing Cross and next to the River Thames. Waterloo is known for its cultural attractions, including the Old Vic theater, South Bank Centre, Sea Life Aquarium, and the London Eye. It also has many restaurants and pubs.

In 1986 this song was still on the jukebox in London. Have you done “All Day and All Of the Night”? It’s Punk Rock 10 years early! If so, maybe something different… “She’s Got Everything” has everything, including Dave Davies’ noise guitar solo, the great Nicky Hopkins, and ‘My Woman From Tokyo’; and “I Gotta Move” has Dave Davies and guest Jimmy Page intertwining guitars, 5 years before Led Zeppelin.

I can't remember if Ray Davies has confirmed or denied it, but "Terry & Julie" are widely assumed to refer to Terence Stamp and Julie Christie, two of the most iconic and beautiful British actors of the era.

Waterloo is a small area of central London, on the north bank of the Thames, (the river in the song). There's a major railway terminus there and it's also a majorTube (underground) station. It's also right in the heart of London so it tends to be busy. There's also a 'Waterloo Bridge there too, alongside the railway bridge. When the song was written London was still grimy, industrial, coal burning. It wasn't an aesthetically pleasing view but Ray Davies saw the beauty, particularly when love and/or a beautiful sunset are involved. Beatifully simple, yet so poetic and with wonderful harmonies! A truly classic pop song! One of the UK's favourites! :)

Classic. "Waterloo Sunset" weaves so much into a short few minutes, the harmonies, the sorta sloppy sounding drums that really aren't, the chords bearing down in the bridge. Ray Davies urban sixties daydream watching people on the street from the window. The Kinks influence on Van Halen is apparent on this one. For a gritty sixties banger from The Kinks, check out "I'm Not Like Everybody Else" from 1966. Also check out "Stop Your Sobbing" and "Where Have All the Good Times Gone", later covered by The Pretenders and Van Halen. And for a straight ahead rocker check out "Victoria" and "(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman" for some disco. Most everybody cut a disco record at some point in the seventies.

You realize there was hit British music in the 60s other than the Beatles, right? Paul McCartney said Ray Davies beat him to writing this melody. It’s as good or better than any Beatles song, especially lyrically. You just don’t fully appreciate it after hearing it just once. It’s on Rolling Stone’s 2020 list of greatest 500 songs of all time at #14.
