Reminds me of the time when I was a kid, I threw a broken game down the stairs in frustration and it started working again, three more times I threw it down the stairs after each time it broke, fixing it each time. My new discovery of how to fix electronics ended abruptly when I was caught trying to carry the malfunctioning family TV up the stairs.

Attitude counts as much as technical competence when working with a crew of any kind, especially when joining. Eli is very fortunate - many humans would start by taking him down a few pegs, just to help him grow into a functional and civil adult. Or they would ditch him as soon as possible.

You walk into my shop with a smart assed attitude, a disrespectful comment on your lips, and a hammer on your belt and you can go look for a job somewhere else. Like him I knew what a 3/8" wrench was before I knew 2+2=4. This kid talks about respect. Respect is earned, and if I'm the person paying your wages, you need to show me the respect I'm entitled to as your employer. Do a proper job and you'll get my respect. Talk shit like he did and you can just keep on walking.

Thank you for the comment, I get it. I actually held back slightly. As a certified technician myself I based the character off of some of the hot-shot students I went to school/worked with. I can personally attest to the accuracy of this attitude in many a young mechanic.

I'm struggling to understand why humanity, when given its first opportunity to have a mechanic fill a position among the galaxies ancients, would choose to send an obnoxious 17 year old instead of a seasoned (future era) rocket scientist equivalent. I guess that's how TV shows are often structured as well though, all teenagers causing a ruckus with no adults in the room.

In one of my previous jobs, I worked with a woman, a very tech savvy computer and program expert. The story could have been told with my former colleague in the engineer slot. I don't remember her as cocky or difficult to get along with. As a male professional I can attest to having had more difficulties with male colleagues and supervisors than female.

The author states that the aliens consider 17 years of age to be "barely out of childhood". This a statement that does not jive with later information offered. Meanwhile, we humans consider 17 yrs of age to be 'barely out of childhood', if that. LOL!
