The Irish Homestead

The Irish Homestead

Күн бұрын

Hi, we are Bec, Sam, Isabella & Euan. After selling our house in the UK & travelling Europe in a motorhome for 10 months, we have bought a derelict farm in Ireland. We are keen to try and live an off grid life, free from debt whilst bringing the farm back to its former glory. We are doing this on a very tight budget and plan on doing as much of the work ourselves.
Please follow along on our journey...we need all the support we can get!
This week, we break through the cottage wall to join the barn and the cottage together.

Its so exciting to watch you breaking through the wall. Imagine how pleased the builders and first owners would be, to see you bringing the house back to now.Its a huge personal achievment and a huge contrubution to local history at the same time.

So back in the day when they were building they would put coins in the walls and the floor boards for good prosperity as money was being spent on materials to build and keeping the structure strong…, So your best bet is to return the coin is close to the position and what she was at and add another coin of your own to support that coin. Because if you were able to find that coin that is good prosperity that that Wall was a good financial strong wall, and by adding another coin you’re adding your financeStrength to that wall as you build your home and don’t forget to add coins to the floors as you go into the cement or into the wood. It was a superstition throughout most of Europe

It's a nice tradition, I hope they keep it up! It was a tradition to put a coin under the mast when stepping it (on wooden sailboats back in the day) I always did - you can never have enough good luck!

As far as the coin goes, I do know that they used to place coins in the walls while they were building their houses for good luck! Maybe they couldn’t afford a real coin, so they took a bit of metal and stamped their initials into it? You and Sam should put a modern coin into part of your renovation, and maybe in a hundred years someone else will find it! 😊💚 Maybe frame that coin you found, or just stick it to the wall with some mortar or something, that would be really cool! Thanks for taking us all on your journey with you. 💚

Yes that's a good idea. We will have to add our initials somewhere in the house. Will be doing more research on that coin it's got me intrigued.

The coin looks like an old Lead token often used to pay agricultural workers. These can date back to around the 1500's.. A&L would of been the proprietors. Would be interesting to see if these initials could be tied to any previous occupants of the farm or surrounding businesses! Great find!

Really good progress. Be great to be able to walk from the Kitchen to the Living room. I remember digging out an old concrete floor out of our County Limerick cottage living room with sledge hammers and pickaxes. It was really compacted clay and lots of stones and boulders that were like flint and was a nightmare. Would of killed me and my helper. The local digger man/ builder was doing the groundworks/ drainage and saved the day and brought his pneumatic kango and diesel compressor over. Also took the waste away in a big farm trailer to build up his ground so all good. Made for a lovely dry insulated floor!

Have you considered swapping doorways from one side of the fireplace in the kitchen to the other? This would give you more room for kitchen cupboards on one side of the house in an L shape. I don't think there is enough room to put any useful kitchen shelving or work bench on the other wall (next to fireplace). It would be better as the doorway into the bedroom. Oh, it’s so good to see you making such good progress. Have to admit, while coveting your seemingly unlimited supply of corrugated sheet, I was wincing at the bare hands while handling it. I’m going to be shopping for some of that, for temporary cover at the stone house, to create a place to hide from the traditional Irish liquid sunshine. Last year, looking forward to 2024, I was envisaging warm dry March weather, like we used to have in my youth, so having my ring beam fully set and wall plate done, by now. As we know, I have yet to do ANYTHING at the stone house this year, bar look at it. I’m starting to accept I’m not going to have the long hot summer days for making progress, because my prep is taking too long. I’m struggling with stuff at home, too. Really need to get a rickety, rotting wooden stairs and collapsed decking dealt with, around the partially collapsed mobile home. Trouble is, every time it rains for more than an hour, the stairs turn into a cascade, so my concrete replacement would be washed away. I really miss having your sort of energy, where you can quickly divert from the planned activity to something else, if you need to. After all, it’s all progress, but I seem to have gotten stuck in a rut, where the current obstacle has to be overcome before the next one, then the one after that. I’m loving the twice a week updates, which relieve some of my frustration, while I listen to the rain. I’m itching to go and have a poke around, over there, but really don’t want to slow you down.

You are more than welcome anytime as you know. You won't be holding us up, always nice when we get visitors as it gives us an excuse for a break. We have the grant timeline pressure and of course the need for the new roof to be on whilst we are still in somewhat dryer weather, although this isn't the case at the moment.

Hi, thanks so much for a mid-week special, so enjoyable. Can't believe the work is coming on at such a speed, the cottage is looking well . Well done so far. My young granddaughter watched with me today and loved it. Afterwards she asked me loads of questions such as :- where are the shops, how far away is the nearest town, will they go to an Irish school ? Etc
@theirishhomestead
@theirishhomestead 3 ай бұрын
Aww love that she was interested. The local town is literally 5 mins away with 3 schools! Our kids are home educated, though. Isabella does art classes here, though. She's quite good. ♥️

Granddaughter also asked will the children have to learn Irish. Perhaps in a future episode you could briefly tell us things like that. Thanks again and take care.

I am curious as to why you didn't put windows in the join areas between the old house and the old barn. It would have let in a lot more light and air into the new extension.
