One thing you didn’t touch on. Taxi industry are big bullies, they prevent you from using bolt, they prevent you from transporting family or friends in your own car. They are super bullies

To an extent it is true depending on the area or road you're in, I'm from Cape town. These taxi bullies have vandalised , destroyed our bus service so much, we don't have regular bus service in our specific area. You try giving someone you know a lift or even someone whose hiking and they will harrass or even attack you, block your car etc....and that is true, I have experienced all of these situations

Growing up I hated riding taxi's, i wanted to ride a bus and Durban had a very good bus service then the ANC did what they do best😔😔

As a Durbanite I also was the bus rider gang until we gave buses to ANC boys and became unreliable, always late, always breaking down and unprofessional

It can be solved by forcing only vehicles with valid permits,you know not like other operators who have multiple vehicles on one bloody permit.

The only way to 'end' taxis is to put the economy where people live. Build schools, clinics, parks, swimming areas, Museums, butcheries, libraries and hospitals in the areas that people live. so that they don't have to travel for everyday things. Apartheid moved everybody far away from economic activity and left them without infrastructure. It needs to be addressed and no regulation can help that. People also need access to agriculture. For both work and food production. Townships aren't close to farms in a way where people can have jobs in the farms and communities can buy food locally and lower prices. It's also why there's a Spaza shop pandemic because they become the only way to buy small goods without going to 'Town'. It's a long way to travel just to buy bread. Many townships don't even roads. If you build trains the taxis will burn them. People just need to travel less. there needs to be a bigger investment in developing the Townships. Building better homes. building better neighborhoods and introducing small economy and health care. then the place will grow itself. There are already small businesses of all kinds in the locations but most of us are cashiers and waiters and attendants and we all need to travel by taxi. Taxis will always be around so long as there is no investment in the people themselves.

Spatial Apartheid in terms of going to work from to your home and/or accessing basic services such as clinics, hospitals, shops, libraries, etc, was the breeding ground for the taxi bosses to capitalize on the masses who don't have transportation to travel where they need to go. It's honestly everywhere, but its really widespread in the townships and village towns when traveling to major populous cities is a distance of 50 km or more. I agree that not just affordable good housing, but building schools, more services facilities and shops closer to the townships and village towns will reduce the over reliance over taxis. They can't burn down schools, clinics, hospitals or libraries as they are also places where they provide jobs for people. I do think that some permits and harsher rules, especially in regards to road safety when driving needs to be implemented, but not at this moment.

An informal sector is very hard to regulate since most folks are self employed...but with south Africa infrastructure ...why not have BRT lanes...when people see the efficiency the taxi people will behave

My family owns taxis in 3 provenances and until u are a driver or in a place where the taxi is yours u will never understand how and why things can get from bad to worse in a matter of minutes. I would like for u to come and work for just 7 days and see if u will not have a change of heart.😆😆😆😆

The DA probably makes life difficult, but the ANC are responsible for the these deaths as they are supposed to government the country, and not allow any entity to have this amount if power.

StatsSA said in 2013 only 39% of workers use taxis as a means of transport and in their latest survey the number is closer to 28%. This coincides with the rise of car ownership in the country and I think with just those two metrics and some basic economics we have an answer to the taxi problem - bring in more affordable cars and ffs grow the economy. South Africans still aspire to have their own means of transport and many will prioritise owning a car over moving to more affluent neighbourhoods.

Remember, trains have ground to a complete halt country wide since CR took over, so the number of taxi users has vastly increased

@@finalpharoah1 uhhh no they haven't. if anything a bunch of new lines have opened and some existing ones have been extended. the new alstrom factory in the east rand has also ramped up production of new trains. it's weird how you people don't care about facts - like you'll just lie about anything and unprovoked

@biggeststeppa1 you talking about factories, I'm talking as a black person who lives in a black community. There are no trains compared to 10 years ago. Rail is also very limited and the vast majority of commuters do not live anywhere near a train. In Cape Town people live on tracks that were operational before Covid. Yes there are attempts to get Prasa and Petrotail back on track, but it's a long slow process and for now, the taxi industry is picking up the slack for a collapsed rail industry

Firstly we need to accept that taxis are here to stay, so government needs to revisit their taxi modernisation programme because it made taxis safer and can help regulate the industry. Secondly cheaper cars and petrol will reduce the public transport market. Incorporate maxis into e-hailing and regulate the whole thing. Integrate e-hailing, taxis and brt systems. All this of course requires good governance and healthy economic growth.

The taxi industry was developed out of necessity, born in turbulent times. This is why most people don't understand why the taxi industry is the way it is currently. It's the reason why it's rough around the edges. And never mind Cape Town, u should see the taxi industry in Turkey or Italy, their taxi industry managed to ban Uber from certain areas....

This industry has potential to boost the economy so much😢 . It's an industry worth billions, if they came together they could build major industry's such as build their own taxis, make their own tires, have their own insurance companies, banks etc it would create so many jobs and help build generational wealth. We buy all our stuff from e.g China yet we have potential to build own industry

I Grew up riding a hi-ace to and from anywhere.. On rainy days I remember the warmth of the mid-engine when you're made to on the engine cover to make room for the big mama and her groceries. lol I also remember the scorching singe on your thigh on hot days. I remember looking at the holes on the floor inside the taxi and watching the road whizz by thinking to myself, I've got nothing to worry about as long as this taxi moves forward I am safe. when we were kids there were taxis that played hiphop, some would only play house and you would even wait just to ride the fun taxi home it is very common to see a taxi full of sleeping people because people are exhausted by the time they transit home and there's a soothing and comforting feeling inside a taxi. and Taxi rules are hilarious. for example never eat your KFC inside the taxi. wait until you get off. Taxis came out of a necessity. people need to use the taxis before trying to regulate how they operate. within reasonable understanding

I live in cape town and I saw people who were stuck in town go to cash crusader and pawn off their phone for money to stay at a backpackers in town. Some managed to pay R400 for an uber home and some still have not gone back.

The taxi industry is the best mode of transport in South Africa. Things would be better if the government recognized them as public transportation and reserve suitable privileges for them to operate safely. Privileges such as reserving them their own lane to drive on. The metro buses in our cities have reserved bus lanes because they're considered and recommended as public transport. They're basically not supposed to be delayed in any way by traffic. The same should apply for the taxis.

Easiest way to sort out the tax matter is to cut the production taxis from companies like Toyota, only minivans (like v class) that should be allowed on the road should be ambulances, panel vans…by this method you slowly introduce more public transportation systems and give shares to tax bosses with permits and proof of business ownership to buy into the public transport shares and they can earn monthly salary through their shares

Taxis are a great solution to the overwhelming public transport issue in South Africa. The only reason I'm not surprised that government hasn't tried to integrate taxis officially (e.g. by giving them demarcated areas to operate in on the road and as parking, or by giving clear indicated routes and infrastructure to support it like waiting stations with proper seating/shelter) is because it's not government owned. I wish they would actually try and make a difference to every day life, and think of the average citizen.

Very informative, I can tell you're really did your research and you know exactly what you're talking about. Unfortunately my friend this is our reality, taxi industry is a threat to the public, to the law abiding citizens. In some towns its NORMAL for them to offload your passengers including your family out of your car and force it into their taxis, sometimes we hear reports of assault from those who refuse to use their service...

My friend tried breaking into the taxi industry by buying 3 honda fits and putting them on Uber. After a month, a Taxi mob boss visited his home. Put a gun to his head ... And said "your cars are mine now. I want $15k in lost revenue in the next month" ...yeah if my friend didn't have friends in high places he would have been murdered.

Simple solution .. increase penalty fees and hold the association to book on tax and fees. The need by the taxi chiefs to preserve position will police the order and weed the excess. Or simply institutionalise the industry into govt. Have taxi bosses in decision making positions. This will improve the industry perspective on pertinent transport issues, and evoke their realistic cooperation.

The taxi drivers are between a rock and a hard place having to make a minimum amount for the taxi owner before being paid. Drivers should be brought into the the same labour laws that encompass all other industries. If they earned a legislated wage their current requirement to dive badly to meet minimum heads in vehicles would diminish.

The gov isn’t incentivising the taxi industry so they should leave it alone as it’s owned privately. Taxis are moving and transporting people…industry is functional in its own way. Fights for routes do happen and casualties taken but bosses come and soon we have an understanding. Any gov interruptions to the industry will cause bigger unsolvable problems.

I used to take the bus and trains before I got my own vehicle the couple of times I took taxis was ok.... But it was dangerous they drive reckless and wrong side of the road and it's just unruly, it's getting worse as the drive over red traffic lights, I wish we have better transport. Stopping ppl for going to work for days using violence is not an option.

The problem started from the beginning, the apartheid government thought they will fail by neglecting them now we have a monster of a thing... there's a lot of money and guns circulating in that industry and it will take a serious government turn things around so that everyone can invest in it

Imagine if the government or traffic cops just said that if a licensed taxi gets a fine, then the owner of said taxi must pay 50% of the fine or something. If the taxi driver is the owner then they just pay it, but if its owned by some taxi bos rhey have to pay. Chances are zero that would ever happen, the taxi bosses would lose their minds (because they know how many fines rhey would be liable for) I dunno, if i was presented id try that. Another thing would be to force the taxi bos into liquidation or to pay R100,000 to the family per person killed in one of their taxies if it was found the driver caused a crash due to neglected cars or bad driving. Overall, none of these would ever fly, but the point im making is what if we could shif some of the responsibility to the taxi owners or Bosses. Yes, many other root causes for taxis even exising are not solved by this, in the same way that more police dont reduce crime as much as a better economy would. I dunno, we fucked dude. Gg

Employers just accepting that a living wage should afford you a Kwid or whatever the cheapest car is the country is currently could be effective

In limpopo it's still virtually impossible for a person with colour to get a permit for their taxi ..since 2009 but funny how we all own the hiace

I think if taxi industry got a cut of the bus or train services profit or earnings then violence from them would minimise.

I have an answer...regulating taxis won't work in its current form. Take a leave from Namibia and allow anyone with a bus to get a permit. In cities you only get a permit if you have a house in that city and only 2 permits per Erf.. it cuts out the big bosses that a running the show

If the country cannot control and regulate the taxi industry (which sounds more like the mafia) then we have little to no hope of self driving public transport solutions in the next 30 years. The world is moving forward yet South Africa is driving backwards in an illegal unroadworthy taxi that is breaking every law in its path.
