In the early to mid-90s the sport that was super popular in my township other than Soccer was cricket. Rugby was always known as the sport of racists, even though most of us didn't really watch the sport we were encouraged that if we did watch it, we must support the teams that played against the Springboks. Most people don't understand how monumental Nelson Mandela was in getting the black population behind the Springboks. My generation gets behind the Boks now because we were the kids that resonated with Madiba during that iconic 95 World Cup victory. Some older generations in townships and rural areas still believe that Rugby is a sport of racists. Siya's captaincy took Rugby to places that would have never been possible before. We still have a long way to go to get Rugby to all corners of the country, but the sport is in a much better place. I hope other National teams implement similar development and management structures. Great breakdown bro.

Everything is and was racist for non-Europeans. Why didnt the black communities during apartheid played rugby within their communities. But its easier to blame apartheid for your own shortcomings and desire to build something. No Moses, just look at what your people has done to a country that once rivaled the USA and UK. This is why the apartheid regime gave you communities and laws so that you can learn how to function in a society, because you didnt even have a wheel when the Europeans settled in SA. Even here in Germany, I always noticed how the stadium got louder when the part of _"Die Stem",_ in the new anthem, got sung. I have never had any interest in Rugby, but when I saw some footage of Southafrica winning the Worldcup on German TV news I was instantly impressed. In a world where people are still divided by religion and "race" there was a team united by their talent and love for the game. There's no real religious divide. The majority of South Africans are Christians. But of course there are many religious minorities, like Muslims and Jews. The real divide today is the gigantic wealth gap. Just check out the Gini coefficient. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gini_coefficient?wprov=sfla1 SA is the most unequal country in the world. It's basically a first world country within a third world country. For the upper class, race doesn't really play a role anymore. Money/wealth is the great divide in the SA of today.

As are Angola, Zambia Sao Tome, just one block away. And that divide is a growing issue globally, a growing threat to democratic ideals, as it erodes the broader population's belief in societal institutions which are eroded by the influence of the minority wealth owners. Thus, for example, we see the polarisation of America, the supposed icon of democracy, to the point where democratically held election results are refuted and the nation's capitol buildings attacked by a riotous, armed mob. The USA Gini coefficient of 41.4% is similar to that of countries like Peru, Bolivia, Haiti, Malaysia - the wealth distribution is better in arch enemies China (38.5%) and Russia (37.5%)! And the Gini coefficient is a kind of coarse measurement, much like GDP. And a low Gini coefficient doesn't necessarily mean a better life for the greater population: e.g. countries like Myanmar (formerly Burma), Iraq, UAE are below 30% but have lousy huma rights records! Suggest you supplement your Gini coefficient view with some research into the Elephant Curve, or Lakner-Milanovic graph, in particular more recent models with post-2008 (GFC) data. e.g www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2018/2/2/16868838/elephant-graph-chart-global-inequality-economic-growth . You will find, depressingly for South Africans, that, whilst the past 3 decades have seen GLOBAL extreme poverty significanlty reduced (the rise of the planet's most populous countries, China, Brazil and India being the most significant factor), 1) Sub-Saharan Africa's extreme poor benefited the least, falling only 12% from 54 to 42, compared to East Asia's plunge from 58% to a mere 4%, and South Asia's cut of two thirds: from 48% to 16%; 2) rocketing concentration of wealth globally, driven by technology, deregulation, globalisation, e.g. the top 1% earned 27% of the growth 1986 - 2016 vs the bottom 50%'s 12% of the growth - i.e.the collective share in the growth of the global pie 1986-2016 of the top 1% was more than double (2.25x) the share of the bottom 50%!! The broad middle class needs to take action against the boundless greed of the plutocratic wealth owners, many of whom now command wealth that exceeds that of entire nation states. To me, as a young boy at 5 during the 1995 world cup, and seeing mandela and the roads quiet as they were, the springboks always represented the south africa that could be. A shining beacon in the world. I think the 2019-23 team really exemplifies this.

I never used to be one of those guys who thought seeing people of my skin mattered, i just saw the green and gold of my beautiful county but seeing the coloured boys come through on merit and actual talent instead of diversity being force fed down our throat has really been inspirational. The likes of kolbe, libbok, willemse, arendse, williams and the list goes on are one of my favourite things about the team we have right now. I love every single person that puts on that shirt and wears it with pride but i can just imagine what a Kolisi and an Mbonambi etc does to all the kids growing up. You missed something. The precise reason why most black Springbok players are Xhosa is because Xhosas started playing rugby in the 1800s. It was played among bĺacks in the Cape Colony in a way that it definitely wasn't in the North-East of the country.

If everything was done on merit, we would still see some sports "dominated" by certain racial groups. It's just that many people simply cannot see past colour, and have to always be measuring. Quota systems simply add fuel to the fire of this, but the average genuine sporting person doesn't give a toss about race or ethnicity, it's about winning by performing well.

Retaining the Springbok as the symbol was wisdom. If it had been changed then its meaning from the apartheid would have remained and it would have been used as a symbol by racists. Retaining it made it into a symbol for all South Africans and washed it of its racist connotations.

Thanks Dan, I think this was well done and informative. I think you got one thing wrong though, its only because you were not old enough to experience '95. The "gees" in '95 was way bigger than in 2019 for reasons other than quota's. I think you had to be there to understand, the main reason is that the games were freely available on TV so everyone COULD watch. In subsequent years its been harder to watch the games and then in 2019 only the knockout stages were shown for free. I think this is a general problem with sports broadcasting though and has lead to the decline of public support for our teams. Hopefully the success and hype of the 2023 WC will change the way people are able to access the sport.

The Springbok belongs and represents all South Africans and I don't believe we should change that. If you are a Springbok, you are there because you are the best in your position and we shouldn't let a symbol like a Springbok ruin that. This country belongs to all of us, whatever the colour of your skin is. Damn, my favourite Boks are Lukhanyo Am and Makazole Mapimpi......because they are brilliant together and top players, not because I want to kiss ass to the black population. The Springbok Synbol is iconic and I truly hope that all Boks and supporters will embrace that as part of the change of our country. You make a very one sided and unfair case against Rugby supporters during Apartheid, singing a song like "die Stem" extra loud or waving the old flag was not an act of racism but an act of cultural and national pride, which is no different than Wales or France singing their anthems and waving their flags. Now obviously white people at that time were racist, but not everything they did was an act of racism, and this is exactly how you make it out to be. It would be no different than me labelling the whole ANC as a terrorist organisation because some of their members planted bombs in churches and hospitals, and then blaming everything wrong in modern South Africa on the fact that the ANC is nothing more than a bunch of terrorists and everything they do comes from their terrorist rotten hearts. It is simply not true, incredibly short sighted and completely hypocritical. Every nation, culture and person has dark moments in their history and we don't define every action ever taken by people as pure evil , we understand that some actions are coming from love, others from hate, some from selflessness and some from selfishness, we all are a mix of good and evil at the same time, and Apartheid South Africa was no different. No white person ever woke up and thought that the Springboks should represent racist Apartheid South Africa, that label was placed on the Springboks by everyone except white South Africa. Was Apartheid bad? It was a terrible and evil thing to do to human beings. Was everything associated with white South Africa evil during Apartheid, no it wasn't, to say that it was or just insinuating that it was is evil and just as dehumanising as calling black or an other race racist names and slurs to lessen their value. I am very glad the Springboks now represent the whole of South Africa, and I don't know of one white person who had any issue with any coloured or black players in the squad, everyone gave their all and we as a nation could see it, and that is why we love them!

I honestly don't think that prior to 1948 when political involvement became the norm in all dimensions of society there was any purposeful racist intent with the Springboks, the jersey or the emblem. One should be careful not to confuse culture for racism. I think its excellent that all South Africans are starting to take an interest in rugby. It is comparable to soccer. When I grew up in the 1990s we did not have soccer as a sport in Afrikaans schools (for which we had to go to clubs if we wanted to play). This is not because soccer is a inherently racist sport in the country but because historically Afrikaners didn't play much soccer as we were told that this is a sport for sissies and real men play rugby. Afrikaners have just always loved rugby and I think for that reason it naturally became synonymous with everything that is good and bad about Afrikanerdom. Even though the sport itself was never intended to oppress any race group it did at times become a tool for politicians to drive their divisive agendas. I love that rugby has become a sport that unifies and transcends cultural boundaries! I also love that it represents so much more to so many more today! May the divisive politicians drink their own poison! Long live the sport and long live our togetherness as South Africans under one God!

Not completely accurate about how the game got to Africa, it was taught to all races in the 1800's. Particularly in the Eastern Cape. The Xhosa and coloured have a history in the game as old as the Afrikaaners. It just wasn't allowed to grow in the black and coloured areas.

Ad Lip...the coloured community grew Rugby 🏉 parallel and had their own Rugby Union led mostly by Educational professionals. Additionally they played New Zealand separately on AB's tour to South Africa.Hence the huge support to AB's...a short insight among many more facts.

The best thing SA Rugby ever did was getting rid of Heyneke Meyer, who was vehemently against transformation, and only picked black players to window-dress. He never fully explained his decision to pick a white scrumhalf on the wing on tour, instead of Lwazi Mvovo, who had been the Currie Cup's top try scorer. Nick Mallett even called him out for leaving an uncapped Siya Kolisi on the bench for an entire game that had already been won, at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. Giving Siya his Springbok debut in his hometown would have been huge for the country. Meyer missed that. Had Meyer been given a contract extension like SA Rugby wanted, many black fans would have turned away from the team. His time was damaging. Then there was Rudolph Streauli's poor handling of the Geo Cronje matter, where Quinton Davids was punished by management for being racially abused by a teammate. Going forward, SA Rugby will have to keep Rassie involved somehow. He accidentally just gets it.

They could still be playing under the old flag and it would make no difference to me and many others who see through the tokenism and condescending racism.

I find this video to be the first thing to dampen my mood after this amazing World Cup. The sensationalist Afrikaner bashing approach is just irritating and you clearly did not do a lot of real research. Read up about the time when players were preferred if their names sounded Afrikaans, but they were in fact English. You casually forget that rugby was introduced in the concentration camps of the Anglo Boer War (Now known as the South African War) when the Colonising Britain murdered a third of Afrikaner woman and children, became the new government and laid the foundation for Apartheid to exist in the first place. Unfortunately, history brushed over the concentration camps for black people who were previously working together with Afrikaner Boers. (Let me not point to the obvious). You also did not read further back than the great Chester Williams to an equally, maybe even greater Errol Tobias. I wonder where he came from. (Pointing again). You make this video to insult Afrikaners and I can admit the history is tainted, but if you want to do a critical analysis of something as holy as rugby and put it out to the public in sound and colour, don't be a holier than thou prick about it.

The apartheid past was so grave it will forever haunt South Africa and you can’t blame people for always bringing it up it’s a very deep scar.
