This IMO not only the best episode of IT Crowd. It's the best episode of any comedy ever, from the dad jumping nonchalantly from the window, to the Irish guy "having" a heart attack seemingly but nobody seems to care 😂 to the wonderful Douglas at the church door screaming Father! It's all absolutely pure gold.

A small detail I love about the first scene is how Douglas sends his secretary back to fetch him some tea before he jumps. I like to think he did that to spare her the shock as he probably cared for her. He didn't need to do that as there were many people in the room already, but I guess he doesn't give a shit about the rest.

Well, we can have a show like this today, but the people at the executive level within the companies producing these type of shows, like ITV or BBC and their American counterparts have been infested with political activism and identity politics, it's a small group of people who have decided to be "offended" for the majority of the viewers. Not only do most people are no offended by these type of comedies, but most people want to have these type of comedies once again. TV hasn't been the same since a decade ago when "woke" ideology took over top institutions and entertainment companies in the West.

The American remake of The Office stopped sucking when it wasn't trying to copy the original, and started doing its own thing. Americans tend to miss the subtlety and approach of British comedy, and end up missing the point and ruining the execution, just look at the US version of The Inbetweeners.

Just watching Family Guy (S3E9) where at the funeral of Peter's boss, the boss sits in a high back armchair just like this in a pre recorded video saying silly things to the mourners. And THIS bit (which obviously came a few years later) came rushing back to me. I wonder if it was a nod or half inspired it? I'd be fairly confident the IT crowd would watch family guy, in some ways similar wacky sense of humour! (I'm a huge fan of both). I wonder if they ever tried turning Meg off and on again.

My father was a reprehensible man, and I, like a few others, was waiting for him to die. I know that sounds awful, but it's true. Anyway, when he did finally bite the biscuit, there was a serious discussion between myself and a couple of others if it would be acceptable to recreate the 'FATHAAAAAAAA!!!!!!' element of this scene. Sadly, we bottled out, but there has always been a feeling in the years since that, a) it was an opportunity lost for no good reason, and, b) it would have enlivened what was a mawkish non-event.
