To be honest, I consider the Dune books to be a masterpiece of worldbuilding. When it comes to the actual writing, I found it to be emotionally dry (pun not intended) Though I definitely think they are required reading for serious sci-fi fans.

I love the worldbuilding. I absolutely love it. Maybe that's why it has endured for so long, the universe he created works despite his surprisingly flat writing.

@@TheIzzyNobreShow I find that older fiction (especially genre fiction) tends to be much more emotionally reserved than modern books. I prefer modern, more melodramatic fiction. I like a ton of emotional content.

Paul was reading a (micro) copy of the Bible in the opening scenes. Paul and Jessica are already biblical names, and thousands of years old [now]. A royal family that prides itself on traditional values carried on other traditions as well: weird thing to get hung up on. Even back-and-forth conversations touching base on previous knowledge held between two characters make sense in that setting, as face-dancers are an actual problem plaguing the nobles and various hidden organizations. The book was written in an omniscient tone, which is jarring, somewhat unusual, but still a solid storytelling format. Understandable that it doesn't jive with many, as it's not exactly popular. The "show, don't tell," part of the book is a good deal of implication, and an assumption that the reader is there in real time with the characters, fully-aware of the hidden dangers of a far-flung future society beset by political machinations from all sides, at all times. Can be dismissive of it, and it can not be your thing, these are all very valid and whatever takes, but there is a good deal of environmental storytelling going on within the framework of the story. It might read a bit ADHD, without pause between describing the idyllic scenery of Caladan before focusing back on individuals within frame and giving a light description that you might find in a screenplay, but the descriptions are still present regardless of how little they linger. If Dune isn't your particular cup of a tea, an even more highly-regarded and praised sci-fi series is Book of the New Sun. It has a more traditional, third-person POV, but an unreliable narrator as its central protagonist. Haven't seen the new film(s), but I've heard they deviate on several key points from the novel, especially with Chani, and her somehow being against the jihad instead of Paul's biggest cheerleader for it. One adaptation that was decent, and its sequel that made Children of Dune somewhat palatable, were the Sy-Fy miniseries in the 00s. Weird as shit, but in a different way than Lynch's film adaptation, and closer to the novel's weirdness.

Your points are so spot on... honestly the new films are... trash. Really just decent cinematic, most actors don't really have many lines, the movie is more about feeling sardukar blood drip down your face or something. The new movie is the second worst portrayal. Which is my man Izzy s favorite version... It's like no prisoners war today. We are about to enter opposite world where Robert Jordan is revered for brevity, Frank Herbert didn't do enough world building or character writing, and Donald Trump sells great shoes for great prices.

@hil449 it's not shabby. The casting is pretty solid, and the director really really knows how to make your jaw drop. He did things is Sicario with the landscape that were incredible. New dune is good. It's not better than the book in any way, but it also does not develop the Duke Attredies at all. The Sci version literally had painted backgrounds at time but they let William Hurt do his thing and if any criticism can be laid on the new film... I think they cut out any development of Paul's father and the interactions between them perhaps because it was already 5 hours over 2 parts. More to the point: Izzy is having a hard time getting into this book. Are there other books you couldn't jump into but found rewarding later? Honestly, some things are not for everyone, Izzy. Here is a solution I have used... and honestly one I think I used perhaps at one point for Dune. SKIP THE BORING STUFF. I know this seems self-explanatory but take Atlas Shrugged, there is like a 50 page speech you can literally just skip. You don't have to throw out the whole book sometime s. I thought Izzy made a good point about unnecessary expository dialogue due to the use of a narrator. Izzy also said he gets so bored 30% through he just meh puts it down. He says the writing is not descriptive of environments and scenery. Is he stuck in a cave with chani somewhere being like I can't take this girl anymore? I think Izzie would get something by finishing it and going onto the 2nd and 3rd book. That's where I stopped but I thought it had an interesting arc. Do you think Izzy should try to force his way through the book?

Cool video. I havent read the book but i had the impression that the book was boring from what friends've told me. In fact i havent read for like 10 years and im trying to get back to it so ill stay away from dune for a couple years till im a regular reading, i dont think i can take it rn. I just read orwell's animal farm but i dont want to start 1984 just yet. Really nice reading full of layers. Im also mixing with some brazilian literature and im reading some short tales because my attention span is kinda short rn. I've recently started The Picture of Dorian Gray because i have a physical copy here. Do you have any recommendations for something easy to read? It doesnt have to be sci fi. Btw it would be really cool if you made a video of your top 10 must read books or the best sci fi books in your opinion, or best books to get into reading. I think alot of people has read in the past but stopped reading for a long time and is trying to get back into it

Well.... My sister and I love the 84 movie, so she bought the novel when the first new movie came out.... aaaaaand she dropped it half way through, but she told it had more to do with how gimm and hevay the plot was getting more than anything else. Also, While I really loved both of the 2 new movies (even though I found the second one to be a tad slow and heavy!! even with the more reveals and action it has!), my sister kinda was bored by the second one and because the plot was heavier and slower, it made her remember of why she dropped the book. :D I remember watching some of the SciFi miniseries from the early 2000's and liking then a lot, but all the mechanical designs where non bizzarre at all when compared to the 84 movie, wich was kinda jarring to me.

I arrived at this same sentiment last week. The world building, concepts, and themes are great and I think Herbert had a great mind, but the writing is pretty mediocre. I prefer to watch and read analysis about the themes and that is far more engaging than the experience of reading any of the books.
@Dosnmeda

I had a similar experience. There really is not much on the page in the first book. Well executed Action scenes? No. Detailed descriptions of environments or objects? Forget it. All there is are detailed descriptions of the motivations and philosophies that drive the characters, and plenty of dialogue about that. In that sense I think it is more like Star Trek rather than Star Wars. I realized after watching Villeneuve's first film that his adaptation elevates the source material in many ways. Hence I decided to leave the books behind and just enjoy the movies.

You could have said gay novella s are not a good casting call for dune... or that Josh Brolin doesn't have enough emotions to be a minstrel. I will forse myself to watch the rest but buddy... the book series for the first 3 is crazy religious: fire. The books sold pretty well. The books are way better than any theatrical approach. To be fair the best visual was the Sci fi series but I really think that there are concepts that are respected about modeling society and what constitutes loyalty. I'm gonna watch the whole thing now but honestly this, to me, at first glance is like Majorie Taylor Green pointing out a "Jewish Space Lazer" I do think there is some Ursula Seguin levels of culture of story building. I have been subscribed for 10 years and I just. Im give it one more go cuz you made.me.happy for like 10 years...

7:17 do you think its a language thing? Im a really dumb american. I barely speak english and a little russian. You speak like 3-4 languages ( from you voice i though English, Spanish, Portuguese at least). Do you think the fact that you process more languages made this read uniquely offensive? I know you say environments and details are not described... i just have to read it again because i have no memories that agree with that. Decent points you should have coveted in a critic: Who the flying hell is the protagonist? Antihero (ok the guy they keep killing and bringing back to life), there is no protagonist..there are antagonists, and there are people that are wrong: the tribesmen and attrades start a universe wide genocide. This is not what a protagonist does. This book had no real protagonist other that the genetic survival and changing forms of man as yhe universe ages. That is a real flaw that causes most people.to drop the series after book 3. You don't bring this up at all. Paul is not a protagonist. He performs like luke a normal guy we view the world from... but that all changes during the invasion. Paul stops being a child, a son, even a man, and becomes a war god with no control over his own life choosing at least to control his death, of course at the hands of his own people. Dune has no protagonist. This made star wars epsiode 1 terrible... and had no effect on Herberts sales and immortal popularity. Sounds like good writing to me even if it breaks the mold.

I love Dune, but it’s always interesting to hear other opinions. Maybe the book’s greatness is in the world it created, not the prose. But if you want to read some truly terrible books, jump ahead in the series. The next two books are ok (a lot of Herbert hammering home points he thought he made in Dune but nobody got) but when you get to God Emperor Dune, it’s just garbage. And doesn’t get better in the last two of Herbert’s books.
