I think this album was really Michaels swan song as group performer as he chose to go solo permanently after hooking up with Quincy Jones for a second time after Off the Wall. He did the Victory album with the group for the comeback tour but I think this album was the one that made him decide to go solo since the group’s popularity was declining.

Yeah I came to say exactly that.. almost the same harmonic functions (verse chords here are basically the chorus chords there, with some variations), most of the arrangements are the same (muted guitar, french horn, etc). Still a cool song.
