As someone who's just starting out in photography and looking to book my first gig; id like to say a big thank you for putting out this video. My biggest fear concerning headshot photography was not knowing how to go about it and this just took all of that away. Once again, thank you. Would love to see more videos like this and will definitely be following

Jason, this was excellent. You obviously are a master craftsman who keeps it both simple and elegant. I did have a few questions and things that you might consider emphasizing if you make a future and similar video. 1) Most HS tutorials with white backdrops emphasize the need to really hit the backdrop with a lot of light and to shield the subject from blowback by the use of V-flats, etc and distance from the subject to the background light. You do not use either shields or distance and it is clear later in the video. You are trying to make the background "whiteish" knowing that you can bring it up to pure white in LR. This makes it SO much less technical to shoot on white and is a point you may want to emphasize. 2) info on where you are positioning your Key Light (I think at 5 or 7 o'clock), and why you do not see a needs for a fill light. 3) Examples of shots both with and without the hair light to show how it separates the subject from the white background (it was not obvious to me). Please don't take these points as criticism. I never give constructive feedback but think your excellent video earned my time. Thank you.

I have to agree for business headshots I go for F5.6 -F8 also unless they ask for a shallow DOF. Actor headshots are shot shallower though. I also take a black frame to make sure no ambient light is coming in unless wanted. Aiming for 3 stops under ambient, that way all the light is what I crate and the shutter speed VS focal length discussion is irrelevant because all the motion stopping work is done via the flash duration. Very detailed video, thank you for sharing.
@markcunzolo1659 Жыл бұрын
Great video Jason! I can't emphasize what he already emphasized enough...if you are a photographer you NEED to learn flash now. I was so scared to make the jump, but I forced myself to start buying Godox flash equipment and to start learning how to use it. It has opened so many doors for my business because there are so many more types of jobs I can take. This is not a joke, so many of my colleagues/competitors in my area do not use flash at all and tell me they are afraid to start using it. Because of that, there are tons of jobs they just can't do because they can't get enough natural light. I'm right there to scoop the jobs up. Plus, potential clients specifically mention to me that they decided to go with me over my competition because my images are so much more striking and bold. If you focus on headshots, start with a Godox ad200pro with your modifier of choice. If you focus on portraits outside, start with a Godox ad400 pro with your modifier of choice. If you focus on events, start with a Godox v860ii along with a Gary Fong light sphere.

Hi Jason ! KZbin randomly suggested your video to me and I watched it Nov 2024. Now Jan 2025 I couldn’t remember your channel name and I had to manually go through my watch history to find this exact video !!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Question - I have an R6 Mark 2 and I’m wondering if I should get the 70-200 f4 or f2.8 for corporate headshots. Since headshots are typically shot at narrower apertures (f5-6.5), what lens you recommend ? I don’t recall you explaining why the f2.8 is better Also - For someone who doesn’t have a studio - do you recommend buying 2/3 lights, light stands, and the reflector or renting a studio? I ask this cause corporate headshots are tricky. Happy new year and thanks in advance 🎉

THANK YOU!! I completely followed this video to perform my very first headshot job - I watched, re-watched, rewound, all of it multiple, multiple times for the shoot and the editing processes. For editing, I used your Photoshop Actions, which were a huge help (big Thanks again). My client was extremely happy with the results and has booked me for family photos this Fall and a birthday party later this year. All of this, and my primary niche is Real Estate (HDR) Photography. I'm super excited to expand this portrait offering to my Realtor Agents and more. QUESTION: for color grading, do you use the same approach for darker skin? Thanks so much!

I'm 52 this year. On and off with photography as amateur through my high school and college, then a little client job in my late 30s and I've been getting into more and more serious amateur photography and getting better. Recently (8 months maybe) I started watching instructional videos on YT and learning even more seriously. And only then did I find out for the first time in my life there's a branch of photography called "corporate headshots", which I understand are different from portrait and slightly different from "glamour", as these are styles and that is a line of work. I'm still getting to terms with the market of this thing. I don't think we ever had it here in Poland, we don't have a tradition for it, only with the arrival of big American companies - I guess, I never worked - things have been changing. But I don't think enough to make a living for more than two or three photographers in my area and I reckon they're already working it.

I have to say that I loved this video. The only thing that concerns me is the time/money ratio. That is something that all of us need to consider when doing this work. Unless I missed it, I did not hear how many poses or shots in the proofs and how much time you spent on post. I am always feeling like I am on the losing end when it comes to time management leading to profitability. And the marketplace is challenging to say the least.
