How Does an Escapement Actually Keep Time?

How do we go from escapement to clock?
•••
First steps are to get the gear ratios figured out. The pendulum swings back and forth every second (1 second period). Since the escapement wheel has 30 teeth, this means is makes 2 full revolutions every minute. To get our seconds hand, we need a gear ratio of 2:1- the seconds hand rotates once for every 2 rotations of the escapement wheel, or once per minute. To get the minute hand, we need to add gears to get a ratio of 60:1. This means the seconds hand needs to turn 60 times for every full rotation of the minutes hand- this counts one hour.

I would try using an intermittent mechanism between the second hand and the minute hand (only pushing the minute hand once per minute). That way the clock can be set by just manually pushing the minute hand, even with the pendulum running. That would requires a separate gear train for the weight of course. I'm not sure how you set the time on a normal grandfather clock.
@Engineezy
@Engineezy Жыл бұрын
Interesting thought! I do have something unique planned for the minute hand though! Stay tuned
@filippopaganini6915
@filippopaganini6915 Жыл бұрын
In the grandfather clock the minute hand and the hour hand are on what is called "motion work". Which is separate from the going train from weight to the escapement wheel. The motion work is clutched to the going train with a spring loaded plate. When you set the time moving the minute wheel you overcome the clutch and put the motion work in motion. Once you stop the movement the clutch re-engage and the clock will continue to work.

Remember a friend had a grandfather clock. It always fascinated me. To last longer the weight was on a pulley. The weight was on a wheel which meant the weight would drop half the amount when the string was pulled through.
@Maninawig
@Maninawig Жыл бұрын
At this point, I would look into the history of clock making and springs for more detailed info. But I am recalling a few mechanic principals that might help you out: •there are unidirectional connections that you could attach on top of your time keeping gears to keep the hands always moving forward and being prominently displayed, (right now the second hand hides itself) ••These could also be used to flip the mechanism leading left to display the hours first, or be orientated to work in the counterclockwise position to form a backwards clock. •I am not too understanding of spring clocks, but I do recall a mechanism where you add a 1:1 ratio on the hour clock and tie the weight between them. I forget the exact set-up, but it was something like the weight pulls down on the string, which moves the hour gear, which then moves the extra gear, which then winds up on the string. Then it ends up reversing itself (which is where the unidirectional connectors come in) Either way, it's looking good.

This demonstrates a recoil escapement, most common escapement in wall clocks. It's noticable that the escapement wheel turns back slightly on each turn of the pendulum (hence the name recoil escapement). They developed a graham escapement from this, where the escapement wheel stands still each time pendulum swings all the way to the end. Energy loss is smaller and accuracy better. I'm a watchmaking student and we fixed these types of clocks in the first year. Still amazes me that mechanical clocks date back to the year 990. They've been making mechanical timekeepers over a 1000 years!
