My sister was in Germany on a trip about a month after the wall fell and she was able to rent a pickaxe to chip off pieces of it - I still have mine tucked away in a box. To look at it, it's just a piece of concrete, but it's cool to know I'm holding a piece of the Berlin Wall. Like you, growing up in the 70s and 80s, I thought it would be there forever.

@@dbradx I remember asking my father when I was a kid why there were two german teams on the football world cup. That was in 1978 and/or 1982, can't remember. Then I remember very well that I was watching the news on TV in 1989 that they made the wall fall. I was 16 and didn't know anything about it. In my country there were just two TV channels by that time and we had little information about the other countries in Europe. In school they taught us about the two World Wars, but probably my teachers should have mentioned very little about the wall, as well.

Same here. Sadly, our youth was not around to see the differences between our free country and the Eastern Block, so we are moving closer to the same limitations put on our speech and thought as was the case in East Germany and the Soviet Union. History is not being taught truthfully.

Back then I felt that this was an important song for us German people. I'm from Bavaria, but we had relatives in East Germany. I couldn't believe my ears and eyes, when I heard the newscaster say that the wall had come down and when I saw all those people in Berlin crying, laughing, partying and falling into each others arms. It was unbelievable! Relatives and friends that had been separated from each other for 28 years could finally meet again!

This song is about the end of the Cold War. I had a chance to see the Scorpions live in Moscow years ago, but I couldn't get anyone to go with me and it wasn't safe to go out at night alone as a female foreigner in Russia in 1997, a few years after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War. I have followed the Moskva River down to Gorky Park, though (Moskva is the Russian word for Moscow), in homage to this song.

I have never been to Moscow, but I was able to visit Berlin Germany in the late 1970's and early 1980's. I have pass through Checkpoint Charlie a few times and it is a dream of mine to stand one day in a free, unified Berlin. Maybe someday maybe my wife and I will take that same walk along the Moskva down to Gorky Park, as well.

A lot of things have changed. I lived near Checkpoint Alpha for 20 years. It doesn't exist anymore but they've turned the East German checkpoint into a museum.

One of the best moments of my gig-going life was with this band. I was at the famous Scorpions gig at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin in 1999, celebrating the tenth anniversary of the fall of Berlin Wall. During this song many many denim and leather clad hairy-arsed heavy rock fans, many of whom were former East Germans, were openly crying and hugging one another "like brothers" - me included. At that moment we felt we could change the world and that we really are all just one people. God, I wish we could all that feel like that again today, the world really needs it.

I was teaching in a class of high school seniors in 1991. It was a study period and we allowed music. Living my first 40 years in the shadow of the Cold War there was real hope it was finally over. When this song came on the radio and I looked out at all those young people, I had to do all I could not to cry. Of course world peace wasn't just around the corner. But the Iron Curtain finally did come down for millions of people in Eastern Europe.

In an era where people are talking endlessly (and belligerently) about border controls, perhaps they should stop and consider the consequences people then faced in crossing from one side of the capital to the other...

As has been mentioned, this song involves some historical context. It was released in 1990 just after the fall of the Berlin wall and in the wake of the collapse of the Soviet Union; The line "I follow the Moskva down to Gorky Park" refers to a specific location in the city of Moscow, Russia. The Moskva river runs through Moskva (that's Moscow in Russian, by the way) and Gorky Park has it's own place in history as well. We had such high hopes then. Maybe too high, I'm afraid. That said, and whilst I haven't yet been able to visit Moscow, I do have it on my "Bucket List" to return one day to a free, united Berlin, Germany. The last time I was there (early 1980's) it was still divided city. and I still have my passport with visa stamps crossing between west and east Berlin through the infamous Checkpoint Charlie. I am old enough to have living memory of both Ronald Reagan's plea, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall" as well as John Kennedy's "lch bin ein Berliner" speech (I am a Berliner, but he spoke it in German). To stand in Berlin, a free, united city in a free, united Germany is a lifelong dream of mine. This song always reminds me to work to make that dream come true. Scorpions vocalist Klaus Meine said he wrote 'Wind of change' being inspired by the band's first concerts in Russia around 1988/1989... seeing thousands of Russian fans singing their songs. The Soviet Union had once banned the Beatles in the 1960's... and the Scorpions were then playing rock concerts there. He remarked that Germany in World War 2 had invaded Russia and killed millions of their people under the nazi banner... and just 40+ years later, a German rock band 2 generations later, were able to appeal to Russian fans and heal the wounds w/ the power of their music and a message of peace. After the single's release, East & West Germany reunited as 1 country after decades of being separated by the Berlin wall in 1990... so it meant a lot to the Scorpions...

We could always get out of various assignments by getting her to tell us about her life in Germany. What it had been like to be a little girl in in WWII Germany, how she and her sister had gotten over the Wall, things like that. She had a fascinating life.

The prequel to this is "still loving you" a story about a guy whose in love with a girl from east Germany...while the wall was still there. Strong emotions among the german people when this was played live. It was literally the largest maximum security prison you've ever seen.

My now ex-husband and I were stationed in Spain when this happened. I remember seeing photos in the newspaper, plus hearing a lot on Armed Forces Radio about the wall coming down from East Berlin. We could just feel the possibilities and the hope in the air!

The HATE that the media and the politicians on both sides are pushing today is NOTHING compared to the 80's. Let alone the active involvement in the Ukraine vs Afghanistan. For the one who wants to countersay me, do not hesitate, but this song was mostly created after the fall of the Berlin wall in wiew to the first rock festival in moscow, not for this festival, mostly for the future ex Soviet Unionas it was the next step after breaking this wall in Berlin. (Moskow peace festival back in 1989 featuring a lot of rock bands. Listening on the lyrics, they clearly speak about Russia. (Follow the Moskva down to Gorky Park are clearly none places in Berlin). If I still have a bit of memory, obviously Scorpions were there but also bands as Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Ozzy Osbourne and I find it quite funny, a moskovit band called "Gorky Park". ;-) Of course I miss some other bands, it's over 30 years now, forget me if I'm getting old....

The very first time I heard this was while watching a Filipino band in Singapore. I had been at sea so didn't get to hear it before that. LOVE Scorpions. Favorite song from them. I saw them live at the GSR Casino in Reno three days after Tom Petty died. A friend and I bumped into a couple of them after the show in the Casino bar and they hadn't even heard about it. STUNED would be the easiest term to use.

I don't think anyone born after 1980 can understand this song. If you weren't cognizant of the Cold War, you miss the "magic of the moment." Millions of people living under tyranny and occupation were liberated and liberated themselves in two years. Only the failure of the protestors at Tiananmen Square and the resulting massacre stings.

The younger generations today dont know the fear of the Cold War. We were under real nuclear threat and nobody knew if the USSR was crazy enough to pull the trigger or not. When the wall came down it was just this feeling of peace that we had survived the storm and that the future would be bright forever.... at least it felt that way at the time. I remember seeing my grandfather just sitting in his recliner chair crying, and NOTHING made my grandfather cry, ever. But the wall had fallen, and the Soviet Union wasnt far behind in collapsing. People look at Russia today as some sort of threat, man Russia is a shadow of its former self, they were a real world super power back then. There was real fear across the world, we had nuclear bomb survival practice in school and stuff back in the day. I may not have a good memory of anything in my life, but the wall... I will never forget the wall coming down. Probably the only thing as profound since that day was SpaceX successfully landing their rockets back on Earth.

Such a powerful song. Im blessed to have history made in 1989. For a brief time. We felt the world has been one with all the political changes in the world. Our oppressive brothers and sisters were free and celebrated their hearts. Why can't the world be like 1989 again

I was in high school in 1989... I remember the wall coming down, and Germany becoming whole again... Shortly after, this song was playing my last year in high school, and I remembered all that had happened, not so long ago... Even today, I remember all these events like they happened yesterday.... So happy to be alive, when great events like these happen, and are brought to life, in song.❤❤❤

I was stationed in Germany on November 9th 1989. The day the Berlin wall fell. Just a few months prior my unit went to the border at Graf and had AK-47's pointed at us from across all that barbed wire
