The audacity to “address” the allegations in this way. I feel bad for the dancers. They’re amazing, the song, choreo, video, are not a bad concept, I wish it was coming from a public figure who isn’t like actually coercing people let alone minors. There is something to be said about being led on, especially in queer relationships the type of confusion both parties can experience, but yeah, wrong spokesperson. Shame on James Charles for giving gay and/or feminine men a bad wrap. Giving into the “pervert” stereotype conservatives like to paint queer people as. Disgusting.

He would probably have a lot better luck if he would just go to fucking therapy and stop acting like a baby gay in their first year out when all a bunch of them try to do is "turn" straight guys bc they are still super insecure in their queer identities and chase people they KNOW they can't have bc they're afraid of true intimacy and don't believe themselves to be worthy of actual love deep down. It's pathetic and he's way too old to be acting like this when he has a plethora of resources to acquire tools to fuckin fix it.

i also appreciate that ‘one of your girls’ is all about desperate yearning from the perspective of someone who sadly wants to do anything to be the person they want even fantasizing about being their dream girl since they aren’t gay. meanwhile james’ song is quite literally like reading from a diary “you said you never did this before. you said you wanted me and now you don’t. you’re down low and you don’t want to be with me because im a boy”. like the one degree of distance we get in ‘one of your girls’ because the narrator isn’t just telling us how they have an unrequited crush but showing us by telling us they’d literally gender bend to be with them, it really adds a lot to the song.
@user-mv5zt8qd9l6 ай бұрын
The line between "I have feelings for someone who's not sexually attracted to my gender" and "I try to throw fame and money at people hoping it'll get them to question their own identity for my personal pleasure" is far from a fine one, and James still manages to slide so gracelessly across it

@user-mv5zt8qd9l6 ай бұрын
And the "you say you'd never done this before," and the "go back to her" I just about made out between Sajak's cuts near the end of the song. The man is all but explicitly confessing to consent violations with these lyrics. He's part of a community that had to fight tooth and nail to stop forced conversion therapy, so he should seriously know better than to knowingly and repeatedly subvert other people's sexuality for his own pleasure. This is disgusting.

Even though it's James Charles, I'm still somewhat surprised that someone can be so bold as to make an entire song and video out of a consent violation. The part where they're on the bed and the shorter man is trying to forcibly kiss the other is disturbing. Edit: not to mention the lyrics being completely hypocritical ("why'd you lead me on?" "You said we can just be friends" he either led you on or rejected you James. Sounds like you're the one trying to lead people on). And who does he think he's kidding when he sang about rejecting the person he's pursued to the point of sexual harassment in the closing part of the song? This is giving all the hallmarks of someone who's dangerously obsessive. This music video is such a colossal self-report on James' part.

I work with sexual trauma survivors professionally, and that part where the pretend Jim Chuck keeps trying to force the other guy to touch or kiss him should honestly carry a trigger warning. I know too many people who have experienced this (and usually leading to worse) and it's quite traumatic. For nobody on that set to call this shit out for what it is is mind boggling to me. The level of entitlement and delusion it takes to create and release something like this is sickening.
@clegs83566 ай бұрын
oh wow, this is informative perspective for me tbh. im a trained dancer, and i think it's easy to forget the almost "language barrier" between the dancers/choreographers and an audience of the general public sometimes...? because to me, that part of it wasn't about *literal* touching, but could be a representation of any form of "reaching" out or seeking emotional connection and intimacy from that person, and being iced out. it genuinely wouldn't occur to me to interpret it that sinisterly, so this is kinda enlightening to hear. it feels very much like an oversight when you're gonna use contemporary dance in mainstream media, and mix these two worlds (and their associated "cultures") and not look for stuff that could be wildly mistranslated... ESPECIALLY with the added context of him being creepy etc... that basically guarantees people reading into things uncharitably, which honestly makes sense. it sounds like a perfect storm for a really unfortunate interpretation on such a large scale, and it's disappointing that the rarer times we see artistic dance featured in videos, it's not done so with care & considering for how well things will translate to an audience that doesn't speak that language fluently. anyway, thanks for making me think about this! i hope knowing that it likely wasn't intended literally might make it less uncomfortable for you? but given the surrounding context i totally understand where you're coming from. i truly don't think the choreography is inherently bad or concerning at all in itself, but it could have been done differently with a broader audience in mind and i think thats a really important point, so thank you 🫶
@user-mv5zt8qd9l6 ай бұрын
@clegs8356 I think it's more a case of people (myself included) not being willing to separate the art from the artist. James has a history of being a sex pest, so for him to write and (presumably) choreograph a scene in which someone forcibly kisses another is going to completely miss any metaphorical mark it maybe intended to hit. And that's because it's coming from a man who has a reputation for behaving in that exact manner in a more literal sense. In contrast, another commenter brought up Pink, who does use interpretive dance sometimes depicting domestic disputes and interpersonal violence in a bunch of her music videos, and the reason those get well-received is because they don't seek to romanticise the behaviour, nor do they come from a person who's known to be an abuser. Imagine the Try music video, but instead of Pink throwing someone through a table, it's Chris Brown. That scene would instantly have a very different subtext.
