“Where are your accusers?” “Well they can’t condemn you and I would never condemn you”. One of my favorite stories. So simple yet powerful. One of my favorite words from Jesus “neither do I condemn you”

Heavenly father, let no problem maker accuse me for problems made by the problem maker. Let the problem maker be convicted of the caused problems and underlying sin and be a solution instead, binding the word of John 8:10 of conviction on the problem maker who does not repent, loosening every problemmaker who does not repent from my life upon no return, in the name and blood of Jesus Christ, amen and hallelujah!

My pastor says he likes to think Jesus was writing things in the ground like the names of people the accusers has committed adultery with. Showing that He knew they were hypocrites. 😊

Remember.....the law said they needed to have two witnesses as well as both caught in the act. She should not have been punished under the law. They were not so right. They brought her falsely. There is a deeper lesson here. If Jesus would have judged, he would not have been following the law. So, Jesus did apply the law. The accusers failed to correctly apply the law.

I disagree that is a deeper lesson, because I don't think Jesus' mission was to "correctly apply the OT law" at all, and my guess is he would have probably done the same thing even if they did bring two witnesses. In only love for you, let me explain what I mean... The law of the OT was to display what we deserve for our sin and how impossible it is for humans to live up to Gods standard, and to tell us that the consequences for those actions is rightfully DEATH (Rom. 6:23). In other words the whole Old Testament is saying -- here's justice... here's what you asked for in the garden - to have knowledge of good and evil - so let's see how trying to live up to that goes. The whole OT is basically this painting of how badly we need Jesus because we cannot forgive or justify ourselves for sin, or live up to the moral standards he set forth to avoid certain condemnation and eternal separation from God. Yes, Jesus would agree with the justice of the law as he is perfectly just and the law illustrates what is truly "fair". But Jesus came to PAY all the penalty for what we owe for our sin so that we might have freedom with him instead of live with our consequences. And he told us there is a new way of living - of mercy and love - because his mercy triumphed OVER judgement (James 2:13) (He also makes it clear that his mercy does not abolish the law, AKA change the definition of right and wrong (Matt 5:17-20)). The point Jesus was making in this passage was, under the Old Testament law, all these people deserved to be punished TOO for their hidden sins. And I think maybe having seen his miracles, they all could sense Jesus could point those sins out if he wanted to, so they put their stones down rather than risk being exposed and humiliated publicly at minimum, or stoned themselves at maximum. He's communicating "yes, she deserves to be punished, but so do you by the same standards, and I alone have the power to forgive it all and set anyone free from sin", Jesus changes everything with his mercy. He convicted everyone in the story of their sin, and let EVERYONE in the story walk free from their deserved punishments and humiliation in one short and powerful sentence. Amazing! And just like him! What an illustration of the entire gospel! Finally, let me ask, can you visualize an alternative scenario where Jesus actually picks up a stone and throws it because there were 2 witnesses and the law was "correctly applied"? He came to forgive and set captives free from the law (Luke 4:18), not to correctly apply the law and punish sinners as the Jewish people expected the messiah to do.... and he loves YOU and throws no stones at you either. I wanted to explain all this because I think these truths can be liberating to you and change your view on God and his infinite love. God bless you!!

Emily Dess actually, Jesus very much had to follow the law, both in spirit and in body. He shows us this in all his stories where people try to trip him up and asked him questions according to the law Jesus had to obey the law to be the perfect sacrifice. If he were to sin, then he would not have been able to atone for our sins. So, Jesus did have to follow the law. Just because I didn't speak about all the rest of the Bible or the Plan of Salvation or anything else, you may miss understand where I'm coming from. I know that Jesus paid for all our sins and that mercy and grace is what we have to look forward to if we believe and obey his commandments. Jesus never did away with anything. We still have to follow all the law, because Jesus commanded us to love thy God with all thy heart, and love thy neighbor as thyself. With those two commandments, all of the law is obeyed. And He has died for our sins so that when we fall short, we can still attain eternal life. But if we don't have a changr of geart to follow him, then we are just giving lip service. He fulfilled all. He is all. But if he were to slip up with the law ( including passing judgement on someone who was falsely brought before him, no matter what kind of judgment or grace he would have given if they would have brought that person before him properly and legally) then he could not die for our sins. We understand and know the love and intent behind the laws and commandments and have them written in our hearts. We need not worry when we focus on Jesus. But he still could not judge the adulterer with how they brought her to him. that is what my point was to my comment. I was not saying that I believed any certain thing. Mini is understand and assume my statements are against scripture. I often find those who come at me with those assumptions are doing so according to their own personal belief and not what the scripture says God bless you sister.

Emily Dess remember. He may not throw stones at us, but when we knock and he opens the door and we asked to come in, he will definitely tell some of us that he doesn't know off and depart from him workers of iniquity. So stones or a door slamming in the face, same thing

My Lucid Life yes, of course I agree he’s perfect and sinless and obeyed the law. But he didn’t come executing just punishment for sinners like it was his deeper purpose on earth, or he’d have done alot more of that and it would have been terrifying. The law or OT doesn’t bind the messiah to be an individual who must punish people for any violation of the law, and that’s where people who tested him were wrong. He’s not somehow obligated to do that. There’s no mandate in the law for every and any Jewish person to make legal judgements, or even choose to throw stones.... that’s all willing participation and one can stay out of that legally as far as I know. I’m reasonably assuming as a typical citizen, Jesus left legal proceedings to local authorities and this is also makes him perfectly obedient to the law. It simply wasn’t his place or obligation in society to mete out punishments, but people assumed he would if he were the true messiah which is why the Pharisees came to him in this story out of everyone else- to test him. And he responded to their test with another test that prioritized mercy over judgement. He obeyed the law perfectly, but as eternal judge, he has the ADDED power to forgive people’s sins. And there are instances of him forgiving sins before he went to the cross too. So we know he’s always been capable of that regardless of the progression of time. So I say yeah, it’s kinda interesting that they failed to bring 2 witnesses... shows they can’t even manage their own law properly. Totally agree, interesting to point out! Do I think it shows a deeper meaning on what Jesus chose to do in the situation? No, not really. Still don’t think he’d have convicted her. I think Jesus would have called them out on bringing 2 witnesses if it were a really important point to him. But I think convicting them of sin and setting them all free from deserved punishments was more his point here. Please do not take me disagreeing as an attack. I only state my opinion because I think it’s really important. It’s not just to be contrarian, because theology matters and affects how people relate to God. And I appreciate the freedom to present opposing opinions without the assumption of mal-intent

Emily Dess we are good. I just bring up points that I see. I think we will have to disagree that everyone is bound by the law. Otherwise, no need to die for us. But I don't hold myself or anyone else to the law. Jesus explained how we are to worship and pray and live the commandments and spread his word.
