@Mbalings yes but a lot of those packaged products come from outside companies, as for the shop they try to keep it eco friendly, plus you can seperate your trash and give the plastics and papers to recycling companoes or the needy who use that as a source of living

At some malls, when you purchase goods and receive a receipt, the receipt will have a bar code that will allow you exit the parking using the receipt you received from that particular retailer. You can ask the cashier whether the receipt will allow you to exit the parking without paying, or sometimes the receipt is written that you can use it to exit the parking without paying. The parking attendance situation is an awkward one, but ultimately you can use your discretion whether to tip them or not, you're not obliged.

They used to be methodical here too and seperated items that shouldn’t be bagged together, and even placed frozen items in transparent bags, but ever since they started making us buy bags it looks like they don’t even train their staff how to pack groceries. Today I had something packed on top of avocado!! The paid parking started as a way to keep our cars safe, and also job creation for homeless people. Way too many of the cars were finding their way to neighbouring countries, and local scrapyards, especially in the 90s. It has really helped reduce car theft and helped the homeless before some “mafia” types took over. We’re not very fond of the chance taking car guards either. They wont even help you if someone scratches your car or it gets stolen so what’s the point? They are almost 100% Congolese men trying to make some money so spare a dollar if you feel so inclined. There are a lot of people just trying to make some money to buy bread for the day in South Africa, local and foreign. You donate if you feel like helping someone out, or not. You’ll be surprised some days seeing man literally cry tears of joy over a few rands… grab the blessings.

The carrier bag story is to try and deter use of plastic, not that it has much of an effect because the environment is still choking from excessive use of plastic, too much plastic pollution, clogging the storm water drainage system during cloud breaks, very noticeable along highways when the highway just gets waterlogged within seconds causing flooding crisis😢

I love the matching shirts. With plastic bags it’s just to preserve the environment. People used to litter plastics everywhere. They came up with a plan to prevent that and it’s working because you hardly see plastics all over the place these days. Tipping the petrol attendant is not compulsory, it’s just that you will feel compelled to tip them because they are normally so kind and they give the best service. I mean they will go to extend of washing your windscreen, checking your water and your tires. Car guards can be too much but some do deserve a tip . I however just give them R5 or R10 because I can imagine how it’s like standing on the sun the whole day. Parkate is sometimes owned by an independent company that’s why you have to pay but at some malls you will only pay if you stay for more than an hour . The more you stay you will pay. This is to ensure that you do not just leave your car and then it takes up the space for other people who can park there. I have never seen anyone put eggs at bottom when packing groceries yet 😂 but I do not invalidate your experience.

Sometimes the parkade or the land on which the mall and parking lot is on is owned or run by another company altogether and not the developers of that mall...so they'll charge you... At times you're being charged for being afforded a secure area that minimizes chances of your car being stolen. With parking attendants I often think about how in their difficult life they could've chosen a life of crime but they're choosing to stand in the sun or rain to watch customer cars... Even if they're not watching that intently... I pay them because they're doing something positive and life is hard enough for them... So why not spread love cos you won't miss that R5/R10.

1. Plastic bags - was free for the better part of our lives. Thought process behind paying for plastic bags is the hope that it would discourage shoppers from using as much plastic as it’s harmful to the environment, ocean etc. I personally still prefer the plastic bags ans at the same time sit with 100 billion Woolworths reusable bags that I never end up reusing. 2. Parking - you right about return on investment but look at it from a different angle…can you imagine the chaos and nightmare if parking were free at Sandton or any of your favourite shopping malls. It already can be a pain finding parking on any given day but free parking would result in a nightmare experience that one would never want to repeat. Also, a lot of people will use free parking as their daily/monthly parking when going to work and will result in you, the shopper struggling to find available parking spots because everyone else using these mall parking as their office parking. 3. Unofficial parking Gaurds is a scam…(but be careful) what you could do is when you pull up, don’t entertain long conversations and never pay the car guard before going in the mall…and when you come back, don’t feel compelled to tip (especially if you feel it’s not warranted) and then just drive away…you can soften that engagement with just a “thanks and goodbye”. 4. To be clear, gas attendants don’t expect a tip (it is a SA culture to tip petrol attendants) but I have almost never come across a gas attendant who expect a tip. In fact, they are rather professional and will clean your windows and put air in your tyres expecting nothing in return. I guess they use to getting tips that they don’t think anything of doing it for free as it’s part of their service (their job) 5. Water - when going out ti eat we understand that water is bottled water however some do (although few) would specify tap water which is free. However most South Africans understand that ordering water mean bottled water and not tap water. Ps: this refill bottled water is suspect…they most probably just filling it up with tap water and charging you for it (so make sure it’s bottled water with a closed cap) 6. Sauces - a giant scam (it should be free or included in the price of the burger/meal) period. This scam is often only associated with chain fast foods or higher end restaurants.

Hi guys....loving the content.....Just something you may consider with regards to the sauce situation. SA is extremely focused on healthy eating and ensuring that most processed or items regarding fats and sugars are not overused hence the pricing of sauces, IMO. I am South African and have visited the US back in 2014 whereby I saw first hand what the food differences and sizes compared to us here in SA. I think it's great that Crystal has found the less sauce option meaning that all that sugar intake has been reduced....LOL....Keep up the great content🔥...Much love from a mixed race Cape Coloured

The reason why parking is paid in some places, is coz some people would park their cars in mall parking even when they not using the mall. So, when they pay for parking, it discourages people from just filling the mall parking with cars while they go on their other business. The reason why you pay for your plastic bag, is for environmental purposes. Plastics polite the environment so, you are discouraged from just taking plastics coz they are free. Most people use the same plastics to avoid buying new ones and those with cars at the mall parking, do not buy plastics - they just take the trolley to the car with their goods and offload into the car. It is important to not use plastics if you don need to.

Paying for plastic bags is actually an environmental tax (to reduce our carbon footprint). And no, u don't tip petrol attendants, they get paid regular salaries by their employers - they mustn't take advantage of you/foreigners. Everyone who doesn't get a regular pay, they earn only tips - that's their only income.

paying for parking is also part of the security mechanism... you need the ticket to exit. plastic bags are now paid for in an attempt to reduce their usage ... before these contaminated and littered the environment ... nowadays that is reduced. tipping at refueling stations (gas is called petrol) and also 'Car guards' is not an expected thing. Unlike in many other countries, we do not have the option of self-service at refueling stations it is in fact illegal to dispense your own fuel in South Africa. garage forecourt attendants do indeed mostly go the extra mile and yeah I think that they are worthy of a tip. A typical 'Car Guard earns between R5000 to R9000 from tips tax-free per month (it is actually not tax-exempt but how do you police that .... it's certainly not a 'job" I would like to do but if one is down and out its an option and I guess it's a form of social support (disguised begging) and it puts food on the table of refugees (many undocumented). You may notice that most 'car guards' are foreign (typically from Zimbabwe/ Malawi, and DRC so a bit of French or Swahili or Lingala will certainly help.) One of the biggest problems/opportunities (depending upon what side of the fence you sit) is the tjo-tjo ('spot fines"/solicited small bribes for traffic or other offences..... most (but not all) cops are unfortunately bribeable and will accept 'cool drink" money and let you go on your merry way (it's illegal of course) The protect against the E-Tols was ONLY in Gauteng.... pay your other tols...but that is now sorted and the eTol saga has come to an end (last month) with the protesting party having won..... the E-tol system was allegedly corrupt with suspected backhands having allegedly being paid to the powers that be. Water from the tap (faucet) is free... our potable (tap) water is supposedly drinkable ( well it certainly was in the past however much of the water treatment processes and plants are aged and outdated and personally I restrict consumption of even treated tapo water.... with the onset of modern diseases some of the medicines such as ARV's does pass through the human body into the wastewater from where it is often treated in the older technology plants and MAY make it back into the environment from where water is taken to be used as domestic water ...after treating by settling and disinfecting. so some of those types of residual chemicals/medicines MAy get through back into the drinking water. yes, of course, there are initiatives afoot to deal with these sophisticated contaminants but there is still a lot more to be done...however, on the plus point, there are far fewer agricultural chemicals such as glyphosate contaminating SA water sources in most areas.... not sure how bad it is in the wheat growing areas such as the Overberg region in the Western Cape where they use round-up (glyphosate) to enable them to have two crops a growing season. The RSA is a sophisticated country with some third-world problems. A lot is better than it was before universal suffrage started but then again other things have gone backward... in my opinion, government education, security, and health systems and processes, still have a long way to go. On the other hand, the private sector is very innovative and MOSTLY conforms to first-world standards, having stepped in to provide great health, security, and education services .. often at a premium .. which is sad as we citizens pay our taxes for the state to provide effective services but it typically falls far below expectations and we do not get value for money from the state... the outcome of this is of course that the wealth gap between the poor and the wealthy continuously widens .... if the state did what they are supposed to do this gap could be closed. Government officials (general workers on average actually get remunerated more than the private sector) ..... there are over 6000 civil servants who earn more than R1 million... I don't understand how this number of civil servants earning so much can be justified as a government job MOSTLY is defined in the laws of the country and there is less requirement for thinking outside of the box than for a manager in the private sector that has to comply to the law AND still think innovatively to keep the company competitive. there are of course some jobs in the civil service that do require forward-thinking however the track record for important things is severely lacking .... I mean RSA has a major car manufacturing sector but does not even have a government policy on manufacturing EVs... other African countries (Ethiopia, Egypt, etc.) that have FAR smaller automotive industries already have EV policies in place.... it doesn't take rocket science to figure out that we URGENTLY need an EV policy to enable the existing automotive companies that build cars in the RSA to invest in new infrastructure and tooling to transform into EV producers here... yet there is (like in many other aspects) a laisse fare approach and very little proactive focus (well that is what is looks like from the outside.) anyway enough rambling on ...yes I still love my country and I am certainly not planning of leaving but of course, I am allowed to point out what I think we can improve upon (for ALL our citizens!)

Tipping petrol attendants is not compulsory. I only tip if they filled up my tank, cleaned windows, checked water and oil and checked my tyre pressure. If I did not fill up the car, I don't tip. Even the car guards, we normally tip, but if I don't have coins, I just tell them that I do not have coins, and they are ok with that

The tipping of petrol attendants is incorrect, you don’t have to and they don’t really expect it,it is up to you if you want to tip.

Due to environmental concerns they introduced reusable bags but they were for sale including the plastic bags, but one never remembers to bring the bags along when going shopping then you find yourself buying more bags, next minute you have a collection of bags😂 that happens a lot to me here in Ireland 🇿🇦 🇮🇪☘️

Christyle, you look really different from your videos from US, you look calm, down and relaxed now, your makeup looks more toned down, not dramatic, you look really you, your natural beauty is more showing than how you looked back home. You would wear your eyebrows, eyelashes, dramatic and hid your beauty. You are very beautiful, NATURALLY, I can even feel your humbleness, calmness now. Yhoooooo! You gorgeous nana

Most things not deemed necessities or needs are taxed to try curb the problem of over consumerism of countries like the US. Also the food laws here require going through some pretty stringent conditions to be fit for consumption. That requires a bit of money. We have a thing called sin-tax for our drug habits. 🤣

Some of the things arent even for extra cash (maintainance) and to give u guys service luxuries but wih huge unemployment its meant to create job opportunities and to helpout the elderly or people with disabilities or moms and children or others with their hands being full, when people expect u to tip sometimes just thank and say youre not carrying cash or at the door tell them that u dont need their service, some will back off others will helpout regardless

You really don't have to tip gas attendants, we never do! and you really don't have to tip the car guards every time. We don't drive around with a bag of coins. We tip to parking attendants but when we run out of coins, we tell the next one, oh I'm very sorry, I've used all my small change today. And they really take it very well.

😅😅 Pardon for laughing!! You are not compelled to tip car guards or our petrol attendance. You are probably taken advantage off when they hear your accent or if they see you are foreigners. Normally a tip is given as a measure of goodwill. Our unemployment rate in South Africa is high and everyone try to put food on the table. Don't😊 feel obligated. 😊

True. I have tipped petrol attendants because the extra services the garage services offer technically that's something you should do yourself. Mena I tip because I look at like they doing what I should be doing for me.

You don't have to tip the petrol attendants. They are employees who are getting paid for that job. You can do that out of your own genoricity.

Tipping the "car guards" and petrol attendants is a general courtesy that we practice in South Africa. We understand that they are not really giving you much, but the culture is just to give them something. They barely make enough to survive so those tips go a long way. The shirts are fire by the way...
