Sorry for replying before finishing the video, but PLEEEAAAASE watch the animated 2003 Sinbad movie, and never ever miss on watching a film because of a Rotten Tomatoes rating (not saying they don't make good points, but many movies that are poorly rated there are actually great, and as a Mythology freak I LOVED the 2003 animated film and thought the voice-acting was spot-on). Please please please watch and do a Revisited video!

I really love how diverse this channel is becoming. When I started watching Messed Up Origins it was mostly about Disney. Now we have so many different kinds of videos - the Arabian Nights, Greek Mythology and so on - he even made a video on a murder last week. I am really looking forward to seeing more stuff - especially stories which aren't very famous. Thanks to Jon I have learned more History than I ever did in school.

Shreyasi Mukherjee I was just thinking that the other day. I’m especially excited about the murder ones cause I think (and hope) he’ll talk about stories that aren’t very well known. Unlike the ones featured over and over and over on *EVERY* true crime channel on YT as well as constantly covered throughout A&D, Tru, Discovery, Oxygen, WE! and of course the ID channel (on regular ol’ fashion TV)

You can just as easily say that Roronoa Zoro is never deterred from trying to become the world's best swordsman after taking a hit from Bartholomew Kuma at point blank range and then trying to pass it off as if nothing happened. This isn't even to mention his horrible sense of direction and always getting lost wherever he goes. It's got a bad rap becase it is only VERY LOOSELY based on the original Sinbad story. Salaam Zahra Heydari My favourite piece of classical music is Scheherazade o.p. 35 by Rimsky Korsakov. My favourite classical stories are Laila and Majnun and Khosrau and Shirin by Ganjavi Nizami. Also firm favourites are Heer and Ranjha by Syed Waris Shah and The Myna from Peacock Garden by Naiyer Masud. But I must say that the 'translation' of Scheherazade by Sir Richard Burton' has made my wish to get a copy of the original with another translation. One thing I have noted is that in no way is this translation suitable for children. It is definitely PGA. I am also a bit scandalized by the seemingly free use of holy quotes intermingled with pure lascivious content which goes absolutely contrary to the Sharia of Islam. So once again I would like to know the source for this work and what the original actually said. Do you know where I can acquire a copy of the original. If necessary I can ask my husband to translate it for me. My husband is fully literate in Punjabi, Farsi, Arabic, Urdu, Pushtu and Hindi.

Fun fact, in Hebrew the book is called “1000 nights and a night”. (אלף לילה ולילה) The addition of the extra night in the title helps both even out the number and add a romanization to the book

Fun fact the Sinbad you had in your thumbnail was based on the variation of Sinbad that takes place in Greek mythology and I love that movie because of it

There's a Anime that references the night of 1000 tales, and Sinbad is one of the main characters called Magi. Sinbad also gets his own show and i think they land alot of Sinbad characteristics in the show.

Hey Jon! Disney actually referenced a few of these tales before with Aladdin in the 90s, whether it was through the series or other merch like their books on tape. The section where Sinbad encounters the giants was a story on tape where IAGO is the one who leads the group through an adventure some of the events in Arabian Nights, including the encounter with giants. The funny thing is, it's almost a mixture of both the Odyssey and the Sinbad story as the giants are cyclops and Iago is the one who saves the group by poking the giant in his eye with his beak. The topper? The giant calls his other friends and they toss boulders at them as they try to escape. Sound familiar? The big twist at the end of the story was that Aladdin and the gang escape the fantasy world only to find out that the great-great granddaughter of Scheherazade is visiting them.

The animated movie was actually pretty damn good. The animation of the goddess was EXTREMELY gorgeous, and could be used as a character study for presence and movement because it's done so well!

as an arab i noticed that his name was translated to sinbad but his real name is sindibad ("sindi" refers to the indus river which we call the sindh river and "bad" means leader or lord ) his name means Lord of the Sindh River :)

And Allah is sometimes confused with the politeist pre islamic Allat. As a catholic interesting in the pre jewish and muslim politheism I saw some similarities of that gods with the Babilonian, Egiptian and Greek gods.
