Sorry for replying before finishing the video, but PLEEEAAAASE watch the animated 2003 Sinbad movie, and never ever miss on watching a film because of a Rotten Tomatoes rating (not saying they don't make good points, but many movies that are poorly rated there are actually great, and as a Mythology freak I LOVED the 2003 animated film and thought the voice-acting was spot-on). Please please please watch and do a Revisited video!

I really love how diverse this channel is becoming. When I started watching Messed Up Origins it was mostly about Disney. Now we have so many different kinds of videos - the Arabian Nights, Greek Mythology and so on - he even made a video on a murder last week. I am really looking forward to seeing more stuff - especially stories which aren't very famous. Thanks to Jon I have learned more History than I ever did in school.

Shreyasi Mukherjee I was just thinking that the other day. I’m especially excited about the murder ones cause I think (and hope) he’ll talk about stories that aren’t very well known. Unlike the ones featured over and over and over on *EVERY* true crime channel on YT as well as constantly covered throughout A&D, Tru, Discovery, Oxygen, WE! and of course the ID channel (on regular ol’ fashion TV)

I didn’t know it was rated so low, it was actually one of my favorites as a kid and was so different from all other movies I had seen at that point; Pirates, adventure, a goddess, monsters, love affairs, sword fights, near death executions. You can just as easily say that Roronoa Zoro is never deterred from trying to become the world's best swordsman after taking a hit from Bartholomew Kuma at point blank range and then trying to pass it off as if nothing happened. This isn't even to mention his horrible sense of direction and always getting lost wherever he goes. Or better yet, Shanks got his arm ripped off and he is still an active emperor of the seas in the new world

Sinbad: Legends of the Seven Seas was always my favorite movie growing up. It was always at my grandparents house, and it was my first introduction to mythology. The way they showed Eris and her interactions with the mortal world while still keeping her out of it, and not just making it so she snapped her fingers... Yeah, it was my favorite intro to the world of mythology.

hey jon, i'm an indian, and i've been following your channel since you started! so amazed to see how far you've come, and now you've literally taken it to my childhood home with a story which i was strongly familiar with growing up in india in this part of the world! thank you! btw, you're always spot on man with the in depth research and precision you put in, so i actually feel bad pointing out this one little thing, but since it's something i know well, might as well i guess. i did let out a little chuckle with your pronounciation of the word "bhang" at 13:07, cause it's actually pronounced as "bhaang" (with the "aa" pronounced like "a" in father) keep coming with these man! no one explains these origins like you do!

I love the DreamWorks movie of Sinbad. I love most of of their older movies. One of my favorite characters is Eris The Goddess of Chaos, which I’m sure you can is the villain of the movie, because of her name and title. I think you should give the movie a try. Fun fact: “Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas” was the last hand - drawn animated film DreamWorks did, because of the little money their hand - drawn animations were making, with the exception of “The Prince of Egypt.”

It's got a bad rap becase it is only VERY LOOSELY based on the original Sinbad story. I'd have preferred to watch a more faithful retelling of those stories in animated form, though it might have been rather depressing, given how many people tend to die on the various voyages that Sinbad embarks upon.

Salaam Zahra Heydari My favourite piece of classical music is Scheherazade o.p. 35 by Rimsky Korsakov. My favourite classical stories are Laila and Majnun and Khosrau and Shirin by Ganjavi Nizami. Also firm favourites are Heer and Ranjha by Syed Waris Shah and The Myna from Peacock Garden by Naiyer Masud. But I must say that the 'translation' of Scheherazade by Sir Richard Burton' has made my wish to get a copy of the original with another translation. One thing I have noted is that in no way is this translation suitable for children. It is definitely PGA. I am also a bit scandalized by the seemingly free use of holy quotes intermingled with pure lascivious content which goes absolutely contrary to the Sharia of Islam. So once again I would like to know the source for this work and what the original actually said. Do you know where I can acquire a copy of the original. If necessary I can ask my husband to translate it for me. My husband is fully literate in Punjabi, Farsi, Arabic, Urdu, Pushtu and Hindi.

If you have not yet, you need to watch the anime’s Magi and more importantly Adventure of Sinbad. In the anime’s the stories you share here are blended into crazy adventures, battles and challenges, and after seeing this it was cool to recollect the anime and how these stories actually happens in them but under different circumstances.

Hey Jon, there’s a Webtooon comic called “The Wrath and the Dawn” that has the same theme of a king killing each woman he married till meeting a woman who tells him stories to stay alive. I figure this would be something you would be interested in looking into and comparing it to the 1001 Arabian Nights.

Hey Jon! Disney actually referenced a few of these tales before with Aladdin in the 90s, whether it was through the series or other merch like their books on tape. The section where Sinbad encounters the giants was a story on tape where IAGO is the one who leads the group through an adventure some of the events in Arabian Nights, including the encounter with giants. The funny thing is, it's almost a mixture of both the Odyssey and the Sinbad story as the giants are cyclops and Iago is the one who saves the group by poking the giant in his eye with his beak. The topper? The giant calls his other friends and they toss boulders at them as they try to escape. Sound familiar? The big twist at the end of the story was that Aladdin and the gang escape the fantasy world only to find out that the great-great granddaughter of Scheherazade is visiting them.
