No wonder the raven said “Never more! ... am I working with that jerk! Lewis Carrol actually had several true and actual health issues One being because of his past working in haberdasheries/Ateliers working with all the odd and toxic chemicals, and dyes it led to him getting major issues with Not only Mercury poisoning but also brain disorders that screwed with his motor skills and serious Migraine and cluster headaches. Which He either purposely or not intentionally interpolated into the Alice stories. Also, Carrol Actually suffered from Optical illusion disorders which messed with his vision not seeing objects and people and other things in life at their correct proportions. there is a specific Medical term for it, but the condition actually does exist and was called lilliputianism (after the Liliputions (little people) in the world of Gulliver's travels; also people have in more modern eras have come to call it the Alice-In-Wonderland Syndrome. (viewing large objects as smaller than they are, or small things as larger, Seeing things that are not there and Not seeing things that are there. :) I actually did an in depth college thesis paper on How Lewis Carroll's own life and health (physical and mental) came to be present in his Alice "Stories: and in a few selected Characters. The Primary character being of the Mad Hatter. Hope that helped to make things a bit more understandable? LOL :) Good Luck If you go researching on the internet. Since the Mad Hatter is my favorite I was always curious about the 10/6 card in his hat. So I did some digging and learned two theories; 1, is that the card is the receipt for his hat and 2, (which is my personal favorite) it stands for October 6, known as Mad Hatter’s Day and is considered the second April Fools Day. The reason the 2nd theory is my favorite is because my birthday is October 6 so I feel like a natural born Mad Hatter 🤪😁

Another reason for it always being tea time could have been the psychological drive for family and friends to be there all the time. It would explain why there was such a large table and all the dishes were already used. It would make sense of the phrase ‘no room’, because in there mind’s eye, their beloveds would still reside. That’s why they would move aside to make more room. You could always accept one more, but none could leave.

Fun Fact: when Ed Wynn voiced the Mad Hatter in the Disney animated Alice in Wonderland, they filmed him saying the lines and doing the actions of his character to act as a reference for the animators before having him record his lines in the recording studio. However, in the recording studio, Wynn's delivery on the lines he originally improvised were rather lacking, so they actually took his improvised dialogue from the live-action reference footage and used that in the final film, animation and all.

I was gifted the Dali version of Wonderland (I wish I could say an original) for Christmas all based on a friend noticing my saying on Facebook that my favorite Dali in the world is the Mach Turtle. If you look at the Tea Party illustration, the Hatter isn't even distinctly shown. There's one tiny figure that could be him, but he's not the face of the scene and I find it interesting how a character can so much the face of a scene that it comes across as daring to depict it otherwise.

In DC's Captain Carrot: OZ/Wonderland War, the Mad Hatter presents this riddle to Dorothy and the Wooglebug, where they both provide two of the answers suggested. The Hatter is surprised, since he never had an answer for the question, he proclaims he now has two. Whereas Pig-Iron wonders why would someone ask a question without knowing the answer, the Hatter replies, 'My Dear Sir, how are you to know anything if you don't ask questions?'

Dodgson was a logician and very good mathematician. There is some speculation by mathematicians today, that Dodgson used his books to playfully satirize of some theories in his day. The Tea scene specifically dealt with various illogical ideas about time propounded by some of his peers. T = Time in mathematical formulae of the day, so it was "T time."

How could you forget the un-birthday party in Through the Looking Glass? Disney took the two books and mashed them together to create the Alice in Wonderland movie, so a lot of people don't know that the un-birthday in Disney's Alice in Wonderland actually didn't happen until the second book. There was a mad tea party in the first one though, in which the Hatter was introduced. And yeah, you're right, hatters (people who made hats) did have a tendency to go kinda nuts from the chemicals used in making the hats that they were exposed to on a regular basis. Presumably no one knew back then that those chemicals were dangerous, I guess. P. S. That invention that guy made, the bed with a built in alarm clock that tossed people out of it? It sounds like a crazy idea, like who the hell would want that? But actually today there is something similar, a bed for those who are deaf that wakes them by shaking the bed/sitting the person up (not tossing them out of it though). Since, you know, deaf people obviously can't hear an alarm clock so they make special beds that wake them at the appointed time by shaking/slowly sitting the person up (kinda like those hospital beds, if you're familiar with them).

Of all the Mad Hatters, I enjoyed Johnny Depp's rendition the most. I particularly liked that Depp (or perhaps this is a part of the character as written by Dogdson. I haven't seen/read any other versions in quite some time) portrayed the duality of madness with a light-hearted silly side and a (admittedly quite tame) psychotic angry side with an effete lisp when light-hearted and a Scottish accent for his dangerous side. "Down with the Bloody Red Queen!" after throwing his hat with Alice on it will stick with me for the rest of my life. That and as a major history buff with an especial fondness for medieval arms and armor, I LOVE that he went into battle with a Claymore longsword and fought like a total madlad (pun intended).

I don’t think I’ve ever seen an illustration of the mad hatter that didn’t make me feel slightly uncomfortable besides the cartoon version. Just me?

....oh. I was hoping to learn more about... the artisans of head decor who died of constant exposure to toxins... TheY would go completely insane, then die in the streets after creating high-quality hats.

that one reminds me of a story . i had a shirt with an alice in wonderland themed design on the front and the back , cant remember exactly what the design was but on the back it said " we're all mad here" . one day i had an apointement at my psychiatrist and people were looking strangely at me in the waiting room and i thought to my self that it maybe only seems as if they are looking at me in a strange way but then when i got home i realised that i wore that shirt to the apointement haha but yeah basicly we all were mad in that room right ? xD
