Venom feels like it's burning you, and ancient/medieval texts refer to venom as 'burning breath' and similar, which was eventually transliterated/mistranslated as flaming breath.

The dance for Chinese New Year doesn’t feature dragons. It’s called a lion dance. There is a dragon dance but it’s very different. Pedantic yes, but feel it’s culturally important to make the distinction.

When you mentioned bonding with dragons I’m surprised you didn’t mention the book Eragon or anything from the Inheritance series. It was a really great story that portrayed dragons as intelligent while also showing how they still had a connection to the power and ferocity that they are known for in the west.

Dragons are my favorite mythological beast in all forms. It's amazing how differently they've been interpreted at different points in time or places in the world. And while I love a good Dragon antagonist, my favorite ones are usually either protagonists or help the protagonists.

I would recommend looking into the Dungeons and Dragons game to see other ways dragons are portrayed. For example, in that game some dragons spit ice, rather than fire, amongst other differences.

Jon: "The dragon dances you see during chinese new year celebrations..." Also Jon: *shows lion dance.* Lol no hard feelings. Dragon dances are actually a bunch of people holding a papermache dragon on sticks and turning it around to imitate the moves of a flying dragon. Surprisingly, the latest minions movie shows that well. What you see is the more common lion dance where 2 performers wear a lion costume and dance like the 4 legged created on poles. Sometimes, they would even throw rice , veges and mandarin oranges to the guests and take ang paos (money in red packets). I dont know the origin but they are every fun to see each cny. 😊

Was going to say the same thing lol. I think the lions are a kind of guardian deity because you can often see two statues of them at the gates of a lot of shrines (in Japan at least, I’m not as knowledgeable about China or anywhere else). Also, in Japanese folklore, koi fish that live a long time (like 100s of years) sort of evolve into dragons and become guardian spirits of rivers. Lol I actually forgot how much of a dragon nerd I used to be until I watched this video 😋🐉

hello, former lion dance performer here! from my understanding the original story / myth goes something along the lines of this: back in the days there was a chinese village, and they had a lion that would constantly show up and threaten them. in order to stop this, the local martial arts school (or the people of the village itself, can't remember) of the village would dress up as the lions and put together a band (drums, pots & pans) in order to threaten the lion / scare it off. sorry it's been a while since i last checked so there might be a few things off, but that's about the gist of the original story. historically however, lion dance was used by martial arts schools to display their skill in martial arts. lots of lion dance stances are kung-fu stances. this is also why in lion dance competitions you'll see lions doing tricks on poles (they are referred to in the community as "jongs"). the lions are also seen as good luck (sorry not sure where that comes from), or the performances themselves are seen to bring good luck, not sure. either way around chinese new years lots of (predominately asian) store owners will hire performances as its seen to bring in good luck for the year. that's also why they "spit" out the food (oranges, lettuce, rice, etc.) its seen as the lion "spitting out" good luck.

I really loved the way the connection between dragon and dragonrider was described in the Eragon book series, it's still one of my fav book series 💕 They could read the mind of eachother but it was described as being more than that, I guess kind of like it is in GOT

Obsessive ASOIAF and GRRM fan here. In HoTD there's only supposed to be 17 dragons and in Fire and Blood there's only 20 dragons during the Dance of Dragons. I'm guessing they're going to cut a few of the dragons too young to ride or maybe one or two of the 3 wild dragons on Dragonstone. They'll probably just keep on the show the only wild dragon to be tamed named Sheepstealer. His rider Nettles is my favorite character from the DoD. I honestly can't wait to see HotD. An amazing KZbinr called David Lightbringer formally known as Lucifer Means Lightbringer was invited to an early showing of the first episode and he has nothing but great things to say about what he saw (I personally think you'll love him because he focuses on the mythology that inspired GRRM and symbolism in the text on his channel) Great episode btw. Keep up the amazing work. I've been a fan of yours for years and always get super excited when I see you uploaded a new episode.

I stopped by one of the beaches they filmed at and was blown away by the majestic views. It wasn't a tourist beach and a bit away from the more famous beaches, but the whole area looks like it was carved out by giants. The edges have cathedral-like caves. I kind of want to see what they're going to do with that location, but I'm not super pumped for the show.

The Dragon Riders of Pern series is amazing 100% recommend to any fantasy lovers out there! Another amazing area to look at how far dragons have come in storytelling is the world of Dungeons and Dragons. Another book series with an amazing world and many amazing takes on dragons is The Legend of Drizzt series that has over 40 books in the series. The main thing all of these have in common is the color of the dragons has a LOT to do with what they can do and in some what their place will be.

The Targaryen dragons were intelligent, and did talk. Rhaegal spoke with Tyrian; in monosyllables, but he also laughed at him. Humour is indicative of intelligence. Watch that episode and you’ll hear Rhaegal clearly say to Tyrian, “Who are you?”

Wow, is Pern really where dragon riding comes from in literature? I think there was a legend in the Carpathians about a necromancer who rode a dragon that could control the weather. Tolkien (pronounced Tolkeen, by the way) had the Nazgûl riding "fell beasts," but they aren't technically dragons by his definition.

I think I love the dragons in the Dragonwatch series by Brandon Mull. They could communicate with humans, they could carry humans in their claws, and they had "breath weapons". Some could breath fire, some could spit acid or poison, some could breath noxious clouds, and others could freeze you. They all looked different too. It was cool and a refreshing take on dragons.

"The idea of a dragon bonding with anyone, much less being ridden, wouldn't have occurred to anyone." That's not true. Look up artistic representations of St. Martha, the sister of Mary Magdalen and Lazarus who, legend has it, tamed a dragon that was tormenting a town. Granted, in the story she usually just holds the thing down while the men kill it, but the art is WILD. I have a picture of her doing what I can only describe as "dragonskiing" up over my stove. Did I mention that she's the patroness of housewives? Because she is. St. Martha, biblical wet blanket, pragmatist, and dragon tamer, is a favorite of mine.

She's the one who complains that Mary isn't helping her serve and Christ kinda scolds her and she also is the sister Christ finds when he returns after hearing of the death of Lazarus. He asks her to open the tomb and she basically says, "but... he's gonna smell real bad," which is hilarious, but also emphasizes just how dead Lazarus was. Like, he was not fresh. This story about the dragon is just tradition about something she did after Christ's death in going out to convert the nations and it's not biblical. Veracity is... up for interpretation and it's definitely not something a Christian has to believe, but naturally early Christians told stories down the years and this is one handed down about St. Martha that influenced how she's been portrayed. I think that's pretty cool. 🤷‍♀️

YES TO MORE MESOPOTAMIAN CULTURE! I would love to see more Assyrian, Babylonian, Chaldean, and Sumerian videos. Especially since the research for it is so difficult, I feel like Jon is one of the few you tubers who would do it justice. I very rarely feel represented in both West and East cultures- were usually just mentioned in passing for a second or two or not even spoken about at all, just a photo/symbol to make reference- to the point where many people even argue that my culture never existed in the first place, is already a dead/extinct culture, or just complete cultural erasure and not being acknowledged for what I am even though I’m very much real, the language is still spoken and written (although the diaspora is making it very difficult), not to mention all the artifacts, tools, statues, and gold in museums literally on display.

I actually enjoyed "Dragon Tales" created and produced by artists and school teacher "Ron Rodecker" and it was his artworks of dragons that made the TV animated series for Sony pictures entertainment/PBS.

Also i think House of Dragons will end better than the original series because unlike the original series there’s a clear roadmap for all the major story beats and characters. We also know how things begin and end so I feel like this show has a better shot than its predecessor, or I could be wrong and things hit the fan as well I’ll wait and see

The "dragon" dance is actually LION DANCE. It is only operated by 2 people so it's a LION. Dragon dance is operated by 12 or more people and with the gigantic lollipop a.k.a the dragon's fire.

Found online If we start with the neutral dragon whose most famous manifestation is probably in Game of Thrones (GoT) where one of the main characters has three dragons following her as her mother. While *Tolkien's* dragons (or for that matter *Fafne* in Norse mythology) are powerful personalities, the three dragons in GoT are _reduced_ to magical animals and, purely symbolically, they are only power through powerful destruction. (Within the GoT world, they are also a royal symbol, but not outside the story.) Instead of symbolizing that you can defeat chaos, darkness and the ever-threatening evil, the symbol is now that chaos and evil, partly lack their own agency, and partly that it can be tamed for use by power. These destructive neutral forces are completely in line with the common sense notion that man can control, not only the nature outside him, but also his own nature.

It's amazing to see the contrast between cultures. Western, typically, view anything more powerful than them as a monster that needs to be eradicated. Eastern, they were sacred creatures to be feared but also respected. What I liked in Game of Thrones is that the line gets blurred between those two ends of the spectrum. Daenerys views the dragons as her children and has a deep bond with them, but when push comes to shove, she ends up using them as weapons of mass destruction just like any megalomaniacs would do whether in a fictional universe or if this was possible in real life. The Dragon has become a symbol of power in several cultures, whether it be status or the pursuit of said power. At the center of it, is the theme that humans have stuck to throughout history and fiction, when they attempt and fail to take control of something they don't understand, they try to destroy it so nobody else can have it.

Have you not ever actually read any Chinese mythologies?!? Japanese, Korean and Chinese mythology all have big bads. Monstrous beasts to be feared, slain or driven away. Some are great serpent men as big as a colossus. Chimeric beasts abound. Human mythologies tend to follow the same paths. Some big powers are good and some big powers are bad. Honesty can’t think of a single mythology that doesn’t follow this pattern. Eastern or western.
