Oh yes finally someone doesn't mess up origin of Sweeney Todd! I've seen a review of this from dead meat doing a kill count and it was amazing. And I'm not going to lie but one of my favorite songs is actually the worst guys in London song and the The Little Priest song. Those are the ones from the Johnny Depp version of the musical.

In Burton's version Benjamin Barker was falsely convicted and sent to Australia. If he spent 15 years there he arrived in 1831 which meant he went to Port Jackson or to Western Australia. Besides convict gang work he might have been "employed" to work in a home but that was mostly reserved for female convicts. Punishment was usually 50 lashes with a cat o nine tails and many received 100, enough to leave no skin on a person's back. One Convict was recorded getting 300 lashes. No wonder his hair got that grey streak and he came back on Beast mode!

To everyone commenting to tell me that Johnny Depp is a musician and plays guitar… I NEVER SAID OTHERWISE! 😂 I simply stated he is not a SINGER, which he’s not! Before Sweeney Todd he had never provided his own vocals for a performance. Look it up if you don’t believe me (like I did before writing this episode). The sheer number of people hearing what they want to just so they can comment “um akshully” is a bit disappointing… 🫥

Very good and spooky video. I was caught off guard by the whole "Tim Burton hates musicals" thing because he is associated with a few. I know that he did not make A Nightmare before Christmas, but he is always going to be associated with it and it's a musical, and so is Corpse Bride. Maybe he only hates live-action musicals? But why was he picked to direct the Dumbo remake and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? Man his career has been almost as weird as his style, but it's hard not to like him.
@Oturan20
@Oturan20 11 ай бұрын
While Burton didn't make the movie "The Nightmare Before Christmas", he did write and illustrate the poem/picture-book that the movie was based on, so it being called "Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas" is more in line with adaptations of books that throw the author's name into the title like "Bram Stoker's Dracula" or "Mary Shelly's Frankenstein".

I feel this is one of Depp's best roles aside from his usual of Captain Jack. He covers as a monster and yet a villain, a tragic one at that. I find his singing charming and yet eerie, no silly nonsense and drunken stupor. True that Burton kinda did that on purpose, but despite him hating musicals, this actually worked.

The original version of the Stephen Sondheim music was meant more as a dark comedy than merely a story about somebody on a murderous rampage and seeking revenge. I remember watching the "Behind the Scenes" documentary about it from HBO (before greed consumed them via their streaming service), and Sondheim himself noticed right away that Tim Burton's film adaptation took advantage of graphically showing lots of blood.

"...how Tim Burton hates musicals..." I'm not surprised. The one thing that kept me from wholeheartedly enjoying the Burton version was the cuts to the script and score...namely, how all the choral parts were cut, which not only robbed us of "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd", but left "God, That's Good!" without any TITLE PHRASE. I've always thought that it seemed as if Burton was AFRAID of the fact that it's a musical...now this confirms it.

Okay, so just so you know Sweeney Todd, in the movie and musical adaptation, is actually an anti-villain. An anti-villain is a person with heroic goals or characteristics, but to achieve those goals they do very villainous things, the main difference between anti-villains and anti-heros is the moment when the end no longer justifies the means. If you want a classic example of an anti-villain is Magneto, his goal is to end the unfair treatment and horrible things done to mutants, but to get to this goal he does some extremely villainous things

If this weren’t a musical, I don’t think I would like this film. I did not see the original performance on Broadway, but I did not find the performances bad on the film. They were pretty good. The actor who plays Anthony sends chills down my spine every time he sings Johanna. And Pretty Woman will always be my favorite song in it. I cannot talk badly about the singing in the film. I have seen way worse. And the film got me into the musical so that is not a bad thing.

I remember watching the musical version on PBS years ago with Angela Lansbury as the female lead and I loved it. Yes, I'm old.

You’ve made my favorite stage play so much better, it’s cool to be able to glean context for the stories I’ve loved for years, thank you so much, this and the Thor video really guaranteed you’ve got a sub outta me

"Attend the tale of Sweeney Todd... his skin was pale and his eye was odd... he shaved the faces of gentleman who never thereafter were heard of again... he trod a path that few have trod... did Sweeney Todd... the Demon Barber of Fleet Street."

I feel your dog must really like hearing your stories, or just your voice. Either way it's very sweet.🥰

Tim Burton did produce “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and that was a musical. Plus, in one of the featurettes, where Sondheim (R.I.P.) was interviewed, Burton had seen the musical.

I own and read the book (The Strings of Pearls). So very different from the play/film adaptation, and the play/film version is so much better.

Terrific works! (All 3 vids on this subject.) BTW… I seem to recall seeing an English film version of the story, made in the early’30’s. (Sweeney played by the appropriately named, “Tod Slaughter”!) If memory serves, there were some pearls, but I just can’t recall exactly how, in the story. Keep up the great work!
