At least 40 hostages are dead of the 100 hostages according to govt sources. One reason for hamas attacking israel was to get all their prisoners released from prison in israel. Right before the war hamas tried to get israel to release hamas prisoners for 2 dead israeli soldiers from a previous war and 2 mental cases who went to gaza voluntarily
