Andy, all good but i would suggest the following improvements to aid clarification:- 1. When demoing the error style kote strike, state clearly that the poor posture you show will invalidate the strike, even if it hits the target. There are many ways and postures that can be judged as poor, but your point about cutting straight and eyes is perfect. Great. 2. The foot advance shown (floating foot semi) is not the only way to stimulate a strike - i.e. how to make strike him by offering a target: "please cut me" or shikakeru is the more advanced version of this. Maybe that is a bridge too far for this first vid on debana waza but could be demoed at some later date on and advanced debana waze vid. Well done - John

Wow, I have this feeling more and more - martial arts are almost the same all over the world... If you are aware of european fencing (longsword, rapier, sabre) - you will see similarities between those and kendo techniques and matches... I would love to see some champion with medals in both sports - HEMA and Kendo :3

Debana waza makes sense now. Very clear "how to" debana men/kote. My instructors are Japanese and can't speak English and I'm American and can't speak Japanese! The video REALLY helped!

i think there “is” debana dou, but it’s usually called Nuki-dou. Simply put, Nuki-dou is like men-kaishi-dou, except, you dont have to parry/block the men. but just do Dou uchi, the same time the opponent does a men. (make sure you go left usually more than usual, because there is a chance if you dont, you may not successfully edvade the men) Extra Note: for good advice for those who aren’t confident in their debana-waza, is these points. -It is always *Better to start early, than too late* What i mean by this is, to always do it more early. its completely fine or even actually better if you striked before the enemy actually started its strike. although it wont be called debana-waza by most, it will be called Amazing “kendo” by all, because all you striked before the enemy had the chance. (although in training i recommend to get it late as possible, because the closer the opponent is doing his strike, the farther away his mind is from defending. to a point if he initiates the strike, he cant cancel it now. “98% of the time”) -stay calm and focused. i recommend 2 mindsets for most of kendokas, one is, Calm and focused, and Alert and reactive. Calm and focused should be most of the match, and alert and reactive should be you when you “do” something being focused allows you to see the learn the opponent better, so you can be more alert. being calm allows you to be more reactive, if you’re are not calm, your legs will everywhere, and you cant react to a sudden men if you have all your weight on one leg.

Doesn't work for me. I'm 52 years old and I'am always getting hit first. Simply when I start to move and approach the opponent I'm becoming easy target for him, since I am close and not fast enough to counterattack on time.

Really fantastic video, but instead of advertising kendostar during the kendo show, why don't you take out youtube adds targeted towards people who watch kendo videos. This would be more effective because people who watch the kendo show already know that it is synonymous with kendostar and it's not reaching a larger audience. You can also make the logo in the top corner a link to kendostar.com

Hi Andy.. Wow... I don't know what to say... Maybe it's just coincidental, but, yesterday my kohai just asked me to teach them debana waza, and I taught them... But it looks like I did a couple of mistakes for dekote just like in 10:58 out of habits. I gonna teach them how to do correctly tomorrow before it's to late and becomes a habit like mine...
