I tried feeding polyethylene water tubing into my hot glue gun at one point to see if that would work. It wasn't quite hot enough to melt it.

Honestly I use a 3dprint pen to attach 3dprinted armor parts together with like "welds" without using glues or to do it quickly before using resin on it

This is great. I just learned the other day that I can use my soldering iron at 260°C to "weld" together my 3d prints, this is gonna come in so handy though! Like mig welding.

I have seen Duff Goldman make sugar "glue" sticks and put them in a glue gun to use as an adhesive on one of the cakes he made. Maybe you could make something similar and see if yours works too 😁

Looks like you effectively have a plastic welder. I would say that'd be probably pretty effective at welding together different 3D prints. Typically stuff I print is bigger than the print volume and so I usually plastic weld my prints together using a 3D pen but that looks faster...

I've wanted to see this tested for the past 3 yrs. I've just been patiently waiting. Btw, it is possible to make realistic roses with simple hot glue, if you roll it while it's still hot enough to flatten it without it sticking. Also, I used parchment paper, the glue won't stick to it. I've a feeling Nate was waiting to use that joke since this idea was drawn up 😂

I built flame wings for a fire Pegasus using hot glue, floral wire and feathers. The tips of the wings were flames of hot glue, and the structure of the wings is a lattice of hot glue, covered in feathers. You can build things in 3D with hot glue if you give the first layer time to cool (pop it in the freezer for a minute or two) before adding the next one.

I did 3D stuff with hot glue by using a strong desk fan for cooling, but it makes your eyes dry quickly (you really need it blowing right onto the object, and because of that also your face as you look at what you're doing).

This is pretty cool. I use a soldering iron to fuse 3d printed armor for cosplay but can actually see this working even better for that purpose. It seems much cleaner and PLA welding with a soldering iron, although fast, doesn’t produce uniform and easily sandable results.

Excluding the motion control functionality of a 3d printer, the rest of it is just a glorified glue gun basically. Problems with your setup: 1) printers have heated beds to help with cohesion, and to help prevent rapid cooling. 2) average nozzle diameter is 0.4mm and I'm fairly certain that is significantly smaller than standard glue guns. 3) the funneling ratio for 3d printers is ~4.25/1 which help to functionally push the filament out by pressure rather than a trigger function using the backend solid matter as a plunger, thus a smooth flow of outbound material. I imagine it would not be that hard to modify any standard glue gun to function like a 3d pen, but not a printer. Never the less... awesome episode, I totally thought those printed glue sticks were not going to work, were they solid or infilled geometry?

Hey TKOR, I have a suggestion you might be interested in. When you put PLA out onto the rubber mat, it was cool enough to not let the molten PLA stick to it. As you know, a 3D printer often heats the print bed to 50-60°C from the PLA transferring onto it from a temperature of 220°. Try a heated surface to overcome slipping away of molten PLASTICK from the gun.
