Try this with a gas clothes dryer. They can get a lot hotter. Disable the thermostat which regulates the temperature.

Freeze dry clay maybe? Will it harden it like a kiln would? Or turn it to dust?

It would harden, but won't have the strength of a fired piece. The heat is what makes ceramics unable to be disolved into water. Clay is mostly silica, which is a fancy word for glass/quartz. When exposed to high heat, the silica molecules fuse to each other, and other aggregates, creating a much harder substance than unfired clay. Source: I'm a sculptor

After 5 minutes of research : Most dryers tend to top out at 171~ degrees Fahrenheit; the usual temperature for popcorn to pop is over 300 F.

Find a dryer with a "Dry Cleaning" or "Steam" setting. Not completely sure they get hot enough, but I suspect they would give you the best chance of success.

@@johnnymonkeyballs3437 thing is, in order to pop corn, the washer would need to melt plastics plates and such, basically hot oven temperatures. Oils heat up to 400 f, seems that's what is needed for popcorn. But I dunno just spitting in the wind. One never knows til one tries though that's how discoveries are made.

Along with the popcorn, place damp clothing also. the water evaporating from the clothes will also rise the temp of the dryer. Kind of like when you wet a paper towel on a burrito in the microwave to heat more evenly.

Plug up the exhaust hole. This should allow the dryer to build up heat above the normal temperature. Fair warning: this is why there are dryer fires when you do not clean out the lint

I think you guys did great with the dryer you have. However, dryers are like microwaves, the heat does, in fact, vary by type. I have a Kenmore dryer that actually has burned/singed cotton shirts on the Heavy Duty setting. It gets like insanely warm. Dries things quite nice, but some settings are quite hot. Perhaps you need to try a different Drying Setting on your dryer? I still would not have thought to make popcorn in a dryer. I love it!!!!

Putting the window on the dryer probably caused a lot of the heat to escape. If I'm not mistaken, the dryer door is constructed with two layers of sheet metal with a layer of air between them. that layer of air is very important to keeping the heat from escaping. So maybe you should try it with a dryer that doesn't have the door modified, or perhaps make the hole much smaller with two layers of clear material and a layer of air between them. maybe even make the layers thicker with two sheets on each side rather than just one. The presence of clothes also helps increase the temperature in the dryer, which is why there is a fire hazard associated with over-stuffing a dryer. so maybe just one bag of popcorn and more towels as well.

For the wattage of the heat, the amount of air heated will affect the temperature. A building with a long vent, partially plugged vent, kinked vent hose, etc will reduce flow and result in higher temperatures. Running outside with no restrictions at all provides the highest airflow possible and the lowest temperature. Many dryers have a thermostat to prevent overheating and fires if the vent is plugged or the belt breaks.

Tinker with the thermostat inside :) Modify things so more current goes through the heating coil and raises your temperature - then remove things that could be flammable inside and produce nasty fumes.
