How many pennies would it take to power a 300 watt computer? (of course its a scrap computer) Since its dc I would need a power inverter but how would I even begin to calculate this? Yes, I'm aware its not practical but its just an experiment that I would love to try. Also, would I need to make up a bunch of penny cells and put them in parallel or series?
@CrazyGaming7559 жыл бұрын

Ha, then I need about 3500 to power mine!
@insaneAnimeLover9 жыл бұрын
Well, each penny gives you about 0.6V and 500µA (= 0.0005A). So you would actually need 1 million pennies. 0.6V * 0.0005A * 1 million = 300W. But the good news is you don't need an inverter. PC power supplies can run on AC or DC. You could make a stack of 333 pennies to get around 200V and then put 3000 of those stacks in parallel to get the current up to 1.5A But why not try it with a cell phone instead? Then you'd only need 3000 pennies.

a conventional light bulb works with AC-volt, a battery puts out DC-volt. so it won't work for a second
@sc0tte1-41610 жыл бұрын
Okeanos86 A conventional bulb will work on either AC or DC. It's just a tungsten filament that heats up; it doesn't matter if the current is alternating or not. Light bulbs in cars ect work the same way and they are on DC. Bulbs with electronics however probably won't such as compact florescent.

Well it really depends in today’s world! There are units that use DC to run, but what type of A/C are you thinking of? A car unit, a window unit, a whole home forced air unit, I would imagine all could be powered by pennies. It’s just each example would need different setups to get each one a working model. And for how long are we talking about for these setups to run? You might be better off getting solar panels a bunch of car batteries and a power converter to run a window A/C then a penny battery, at least the solar can be recharged each day!

If 10 pennies = 6 volts, and a standard light bulb uses 120 volts... You'd need 20x the volts and therefore 20x the pennies. You'd need 2$ worth of pennies to light a single lightbulb. The real downfall is the space it takes up.
@CST19929 жыл бұрын
+MrTerminalX It won't work anyway. You are forgetting that the light he uses is a LED, not an incandescent bulb. A regular bulb is incandescent. Assuming 30W bulbs, you'll need 250 mA current at 120V to power up the bulb to sufficient brightness. Doing the math, you'll need 10,000 stacks in parallel of 200 pennies in series each, plus a DC-to-AC converter to light up the bulb. Ignoring everything else, you need $20,000 in pennies for your experiment. Plus, it'll take a hell of a lot of space.
@mattr41989 жыл бұрын
+MrTerminalX Normal light bulbs would require A LOT more than the couple milliamps the pennies would put out.

Not this type of cell. It consumes itself while it functions.

I don't want to be THAT guy, but isn't it illegal to deface currency?
@Nyambers8 жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly, it is alright to deface currency as long as you dont put it back to circulation. I'm not really sure.

Why must the cardboard be soaked in vinegar? And roughly how long does the cell last? (I assume it vaires on the amount of pennies used?
@Danny-vv3zw7 жыл бұрын
could this somehow Power a raspberry pi 3?
@Goldtoise7 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried it, but i'm pretty sure you can. The raspberry pi 3 needs 5.1 volts, but if you want to have it powered for a while, just make 10 cells of zinc/cardboard/copper. I'm not sure about connecting the negative and positive sides to the micro usb cable. You might have to look into that.
@_alles_51857 жыл бұрын
That could work. But don't stack too mutch pennys over themselves, because it lowers the current. I would prefer to seperate them to more battries and combine them, i don't know if this work but I think so
@johnisaaccalderon50667 жыл бұрын
*_Alles_* Well, you are essentially / technically speaking right. 'cause the *RESISTANCE* will *DOUBLE* for each cell you add to the *SERIES* connection.
