brought tears. My gran was named Shanahan. Her parents moved from Limerick to take a job in West Virginia at the turn of the 20th century. I hadn't thought about this song in decades(I'm 40 now) and I was throwing a St. Paddy's party and was looking for new Irish music and came across this, and it just brought back a memory of my gran singing this in the kitchen, wearing her nightgown and putting away dishes. I must've been 10 and I remember asking her if she was speaking English and she winked and said "kinda pumpkin". Thanks. She would've loved to watch this.

@84rebz3 жыл бұрын
@@JohnDouille Buddy I don't do this. I know everything is an offense and insult today. I'm sorry you were offended, at mass on his feast day we refer to him as St. Patrick. Lyrics: While In the merry month of May n'o, From my home I started, Left the girls of Chum, I ' Nearly broken hearted, Saluted father dear, Kissed my darlin' mother, Drank a pint of beer-My grief and tears to smotherTHENOFF to reap THE CORN, nleave for I WAS BORN, cut a stout blackthorn, To banish ghost and goblin, brand new PAIR of brogues, to rattled OVER THE BOGS, n'Frightened all the DOOGS,On the rocky road to Dublin. One, two, three, four five, Hunt the hare and turn her Down the rocky road And all the ways to Dublin, Maic-fol-loli-ra. In Mullingar that night, I rested limbs so weary, Started by daylight, Next mornin' light and airy, Took a drop of the pure, To keep my heart from sinkin', That's a Paddy's cure, Whene'er he's on for drinking. To see the lasses smile, Laughing all the while, At my curious style, 'Twould set your heart a-bubblin'. They ax'd if I was hired, The wages I required, Till I was almost tired, Of the rocky road to Dublin.One, two, three, four five, Hunt the hare and turn her Down the rocky road And all the ways to Dublin, Whack-fol-lol-de-ra. In Dublin next arrived, I thought it such a pity, To be so soon deprived, A view of that fine city. Then I took a stroll, All among the quality, My bundle it was stole, In a neat locality; Something crossed my mind, Then I looked behind; No bundle could I find, Upon my stick a wobblin'. Enquirin' for the rogue, They said my Connacht brogue, Wasn't much in vogue, On the rocky road to Dublin.One, two, three, four five, Hunt the hare and turn her Down the rocky road And all the ways to Dublin, Whack-fol-lol-de-ra. From there I got away, My spirits never failin' Landed on the quay As the ship was sailin'; Captain at me roared, Said that no room had he, When I jumped aboard, A cabin found for Paddy, Down among the pigs I played some hearty rigs, Danced some hearty jigs, The water round me bubblin', When off Holyhead, I wished myself was dead, Or better far instead, On the rocky road to Dublin.One, two, three, four five, Hunt the hare and turn her Down the rocky road And all the ways to Dublin, Whack-fol-lol-de-ra. The boys of Liverpool, When we safely landed, Called myself a fool; I could no longer stand it; Blood began to boil, Temper I was losin', Poor ould Erin's isle They began abusin', "Hurrah my soul," sez I, My shillelagh I let fly; Some Galway boys were by, Saw I was a hobble in, Then with a loud hurray, They joined in the affray. We quickly cleared the way, For the rocky road to Dublin. One, two, three, four five, Hunt the hare and turn her Down the rocky road And all the ways to Dublin, Whack-fol-lol-de-ra.

2:37 the brawl with the Liverpudlians, other Irish boys joining in to help him, is absolutely the best part! The lyrics are so vividly written: Ah well the boys of Liverpool, when we safely landed Called meself a fool, I could no longer stand it Blood began to boil, temper I was losing Poor old Erin's isle they began abusing It was a "Hurrah me soul!" says I, me shillelagh I let fly Galway boys were by and saw I was a-hobblin' With "Hello and hurray!" joined in the affray Quickly cleared the way for the rocky road to Dublin

My Great Grandmother moved from Dublin when she was about 3, walked the streets barefoot when times were hard. She doesn't talk about it unless you ask, but her face lights up when she would tell me about her Da and Ma, how he used to look through the top of his glasses when her and her Siblings where in for a telling off and say thing's like "I'll give you stn to cry about" and "I'll tell ya stn for ntn" 😂. The fact I've never heard this song and the Fact it mentions Liverpool my City because my little Nan moved here made my eyes water a little, I won't lie 🙄. What a song this is by the way.
