I have a wide range of great Tasmanian hardwoods growing, dead and dying, s vast supply to choose from in any size. Thank you for sharing your expertise & ideas, certainly tops on my starting in wood turning. Spent 50 odd years using metal machine lathes etc, so that part is already well learnt. @@TheKlondikeCraftsman The vases I mentioned were wild cherry. They were green. Like just cut an hour before green and it's Spring time. Something I'm gonna have to think about in the future. In the Spring, the sap rises. So the blocks were saturated as much they they could be. I actually had rooster tails of water flying off the lathe. I also noticed larger than expected cracks after they dried some. So my plan from now on is to let the blocks sit a few weeks to dry out some. Thanks again for your videos. Now on to your rolling pin video.

I have made something similar but more of a novelty that sells well. Making almost the same shape, except I try to find wood with a feature in the center like a knot stub, (I use a lot of driftwood) , I round it down to the spur, take it off and cut it on the bandsaw, cut fish mouth into the spur end so it is gone, cut gills into side and cut your base into a tail. Drill couple of eyes, use beads. Drill hole in bottom to put in metal rod for display to use as yard art or driftwood base as art in your house. No two are ever the same. Fun to make and fast, no finish required.

Agree everything you said is true about turning being addictive, expensive and difficult to make any respectful money at is so true. These quick and dirty green lumber pieces are sure to spike any novices enthusiasm and bring in few dollars at a craft event the downside is as you showed they'll crack, split warp and the bark will fall off in a short period of time so as long as everyone fully understands that life is good.

@@TheKlondikeCraftsman I find I use my skew like that all the time to smooth out the small lines from the chisels, especially on pens. It really speeds up the process, reducing the sanding required.

Just getting my shop finished. Saw your clip and makes me feel more comfortable in getting started in turning. Bought an old lathe from a neighbor who was moving out (single pipe from front to tail, never saw that B4...). Looking forward to testing this project out, you make it look pretty feasible for beginner, tks.

What a fantastic video! I’m just starting wood turning here in Germany and have watched numerous lathe turning videos (mostly a waste of time) but have thoroughly enjoyed your skill and patient way of explaining why and what you are doing. Can’t wait to have a go at making my first vase. Well done and keep up the good work.
