Just got my first lathe. Made icicle ornament from dry cherry and 5 mushrooms from just cut Hackberry. I had a skate on 2 of the mushrooms so one has no bark on top other no bark on bottom. Both look good.

I like the organic shape on the stem of the last one you turned. I saw a couple of places where that could have been a feature on the others as well. But that's just my preference; as you said, no matter what you turn, there's a mushroom out there (within reason) that looks like it. I don't mind the music in the background. ... and no, I'm neither a serial killer nor a used car salesman.

Thanks, the way you present and how your videos are delivered are far superior to many others. If you are like me I don’t like stop start, I want to see how is made. I can see the chisels being used which is go enough for me. I appreciate your comments on your preferred type of finish which the bark and shape but you also are saying there is no right or wrong and for a beginner that’s great. You are instructing people who are going to enjoy their lathe that basically there is no write or wrong. The 4 jag Chuck is a great tool and I have to admit I have invested in one (and it is and investment they are not cheap) I wish I had seen you videos sooner to save some of my frustration.

It is a good spindle turning practice exercise, odds are they will check and crack as the pith dies out though, still could be a nice little decoration till it does, I believe the better way of making these is to use lumber that has the pith removed beforehand then turn it back into a cylinder and then make the mushroom turning. if one was going to sell them that is, but for honing ones spindle skills, it is perfectly acceptable to use " small logs".
@TheKlondikeCraftsman3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Pat. These were very dry so I don’t expect any issue but you are correct on turning with the pith in.
@jf67203 жыл бұрын
I tried making these to sell a few years ago. I thought it would be a good idea to use a forstner bit and drill a shallow hole for a candle on top. I didn't realize how scared most people are of candles! I even made some where you could put the small tealight candles (that have their own holder) in and people still complained about not trusting them. SO, don't do what I did ;)

Mr. Lewis, Love this video! I will have to try these out! I have some nice spalted holly, pecan, sugar berry and spalted white oak I can try these on! They should turn, no pun intended, out great! Question: What kind of gouge is that!? I know what a spindle and a fingernail gouge looks like but not that one. Is it because it has a more obtuse angle, say 60° or 65°? I imagine that this particular gouge is the best for getting the bottom of your bowls cut clean? Would love to know and hear back from you. Thanks!!! AJ Savannah, GA USA

Funny thing about the bark edges; while I share your lack of enthusiasm for them, it seems that there are a lot of people (end users & buyers) who love them. My wife is OK with most of what I've turned but really likes those things that have bark left on. She says it will be hard to find buyers for a lot of what I make, but people will really go for the things with the bark left on. Go figure.

It’s a 50/50 on music or none. I’ve decided not to put music in real-time videos and I’ll monitor the sound of anything sped up. If it is shrill I will either cut sound way back or go with music. Thanks for watching!

GREAT VIDEO. I really like the way you explained what you were dong and showing the different ways to turn them. I do have a question: Would it be safer to move the tool rest down as you chucked the wood away? I was nervous you were going to catch the tool at the angle you got to.

Thank you Stacy! I was never over extended where a catch would be an issue but closer is never a bad idea, especially if you are new. I appreciate you watching!
