This time of year it is time for the parent koi to spawn and the important period of breeding and growing up Nishikigoi takes place. In the course of this program we follow the Shintaro Koi farm during the entire breeding process.
In this episode, the Shintaro Koi Farm shows us exactly how breeders in Japan breed Koi, from the preparations for the nursery to the actual breeding program. We do not skip anything and we show everything from the beginning to the end.

I too have a pond in Michigan the best fish in the whole world are produce obviously in Japan .I’ve seen other countries do it for money !! They do not honor the Koi or heritage .third generation Koi breeders .This is not just breeding fish this is honorable passing from one to the next generation! So beautiful to watch someone that really cares about koi in General.It’s amazing to me that people think every time they get a quote from Michigan it’s from Japan when it’s been bred and fish farm maybe in Ohio not the true Japanese Koi that we see here amazing Margie B

How come the fish can be taken out of the water for so long while taking the eggs out, won’t it need some water every so often

They’re sedated, thus reducing all functions. These fish are prized and this isn’t very long. Less than 5 min, the Gill covers keep the gills wet, the towel assist in handling and protects the fish. Waking them up is tricky, they need water to flow around the gills to flush the sedative

Okay i started breeding last night and later it rained so hard. The roof didnt stand the rain and it ended up the rainwater mixing to my breeding pond. It started to make the water bit dim. Should I redo? Or change the water or just leave it be???

Thank you for sharing.. I am an amateur koi enthusiast and by watching your video I learned a lot. I have some male and female koi which are three to four years old. How can I tell if the female koi is ready to lay eggs besides having big belly? Will they act differently if they are ready? What about the male, will they have sign/signs that they ready to have sperm to fertilize the eggs? Should I separate the male and female and put them in a separate tank? I don't intend to do it manually. I will let nature do it for me. Thank you.

Exactly! They want to maximize the potential fertilized eggs 👌

In a sanke and showa spawning the mixture or variation across the whole batch is so vast that they need to maximise their chances of getting what they are looking for (Sanke more than showa although the rate is still low for showa too) anything from single colour koi like benigoi through to hi utsuri, shiro utsuri, kohaku, shiro muji ect ect all in the same spawning so the percentage is low to get sanke or showa but even then the likelihood of getting a sanke or showa that has potential is even smaller.
