Tarikh Episode 760
Tarikh is a daily program in which we present you with incidents and stories of noteworthy persons of Indian History in Hindi. In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about The Jacob Diamond, a behemoth at 184.75 carats, is the second largest diamond in India (after the Kohinoor). Unlike its famous counterpart, the Jacob has a rather peculiar history.
Found in South Africa, it landed in the hands of a flamboyant jeweler named Alexander Malcolm Jacob. He attempted to sell it to the Nizam of Hyderabad, the then richest man in the world. The deal went awry, with accusations and court cases flying. The Nizam, unimpressed, ended up storing the diamond in a dirty cloth, shoved in an old shoe!
Years later, the Nizam's son inherited the diamond and, remarkably, used it as a paperweight. Finally, in 1995, the Government of India acquired this massive gem, which is now housed in the Reserve Bank of India's vaults. Jacob Diamond's story, with its cast of colorful characters and unexpected twists, is a fascinating chapter in India's gem history.
