I used the DALL-E AI (otherwise known as Craiyon) to generate every texture in this Minecraft texture pack. I spent 28 total hours finding, editing, and adding these textures to the pack with additional help from FinlayPacks. I was genuinely shocked by how nice this texturepack came out. Artificial intelligence like DALL-E could be game-changing for Minecraft texture pack designers.

Actually, Craiyon used to be DALL-E-Mini, but since it wasn't official they got in trouble for using the DALL-E name, that's why they rebranded it to Craiyon

This is the first time I've seen any "practical" use of the new AI art stuff. I'm honestly impressed at how _useful_ this is. Made a decent looking texture pack with a whole lot less effort. Just goes to show that while AI won't necessarily replace humans, it will reduce the amount of tedious work by a significant margin. Someone from 2012 would probably be impressed with this pack. Nice work!

Something this AI is also really good at is distant scenery shots, which can serve as backgrounds of art pieces as they are or be the inspirational base to work off of. In general, using the AI's results and the process that goes into formulating and refining the prompts as a source of inspiration is probably the best use for craiyon as it stands though.

trying to get them to work in a square like in minecraft would be extremely difficult. also, pretty sure craiyon uses dall-e mini which isnt as powerful as the full version, so it has trouble with more advanced prompts.

Just a reminder that crayon is separate from dall-e! Crayon made their own image generation ai that isn’t quite as good as dall-e, and called themselves dall-e mini to piggyback off the success of dall-e. Dall-e, correctly, asked them to change their name to avoid confusion between the two, and they chose crayon as their new name.

iirc it was the same _architecture_ as dall·e, just smaller same goes for gpt-neo, which i can't quite articulate why it wasn't renamed; i guess `dall·e` is more of a brand name whereas `gpt` is a generic acronym (`generative pretrained transformer`)

That's because the AI doesn't give you a non-perspective, uniform square just by putting in "texture." AI doesn't interpret that word correctly.

I think one thing that might be useful is more careful specification of three prompt. One big issue with these is that many are not tileable. To fix this, one solution is to make them tileable in an image editor. A more fun solution is to tell the AI to make them tileable and let it try its best.

Podzol is really common in there Pacific Northwest, it's like a mat of decomposing pine needles that covers the forest floor. It's squishy and less dense than normal dirt, and too acidic for many plants like grasses to take root in.

podzol is just the shed needles of pines, cedars etc as turf. (it doesnt decompose as easily as leaves so just kinda becomes the forest floor) Theres a lot of coniferous forest where I live, but I didn't know it was called podzol until minecraft lol

for podzol, you could have done a pine needle texture, as podzol is the kind of soil that forms from pine needles, as they are very acidic when the decompose.
