Shame on Honda for letting this Gen 1 languish - definitely needed rescuing. Well done for mentioning Peter Perkins, there would be a good deal fewer Gen 1s still on the road if it wasn't for him! You haven't yet mentioned the crazy gearing - up to 69 mph in 2nd. I would often go directly from 2nd to 5th. Also worth mentioning what a fantastic international user group there is - and a friendly bunch of UK enthusiasts. A lot of knowledge has built up over the years on how these batteries behave. I was the guy who exhibited the citrus Insight at Fully Charged Live at Silverstone in 2019. I eventually sold it in a Bonhams auction at Bicester. Didn't fetch very much and, in fact, I lost money on it (money had been spent on replacing the whole cat following the failure of an O2 sensor) but that is not the point - passing on a rare vehicle to someone who will cherish it and keep it on the road is what matters.

A great trip down memory lane! I look forward to seeing you bring her back to health and happiness, and making a few upgrades. I had a 30km each way commute on mostly rural roads for which the Insight was perfect - great fun to drive while listening to the upgraded stereo, sub-woofer in the rear storage bin ;-) and I regularly got 100+ mpg. Stuck snow tires on it for the winter, the only issue was snow build-up behind the rear wheel spats! I drove it across Canada when we moved to BC then sadly it became surplus to requirements as I was able to commute to work via bike. Sold it to a chap from California. It was by far the most unique, advanced and well-engineered car I've ever had. Thanks Jonny.

The main trouble is the price for the big battery packs that make the bulk of the price on full EVs. My view on Hybrids is even more parts that need servicing and can fail, power efficiency is questionable, fuel efficiency up to the electric range and then it gets worse then a full combustion variant because of added weight. Hybrid is a Jack of all trades master of none. EVs are an investment that will pay themselves off eventually because of low cost maintenance and power\fuel. I see it like Solar Panel might be a big cost up front but will net positive in the long run.
@DT-dc4br2 жыл бұрын

We used a NiMH pack and a three cylinder bmw motorcycle engine mated to a VW five speed manual transmission with an overrunning clutch between to two to feed in the electric power. In many respects it was very similar to the Insight which was released the very next year. At the time, I imagined that Honda had copied us. And for me - like yourself - it’s the fact that it was so well engineered in an era when the engineering was priority, not profit margins and image like all new cars that makes it so appealing. It’s a survivor and running as well as the day it drove out that Honda dealership for the first time. And ironically this car is far more environmentally sound than any EV.. period. The battery is smaller, it’s economical, it’s not filling a landfill or using more resources . Can’t wait to see this cute little thing on it’s journey back to health! And above all it’s down right quirky. And for me that’s the biggest appeal of any car

I love that you picked up this car. The First Gen insight was almost my first car in 2001. Luckily for me, there was a Second Gen CRX HF for 3500US versus paying 17000USD for the Insight. As a high school kid, it was a no brainer and I went with the HF. I still have it to this day but I should would love to find a Green first gen, manual Insight to add to the fleet. This is such a wonderful car that has aged gracefully. I still see them here on the road in Washington State. Looking at some of the Japanese auctions, it is cheaper for me to import one, with lower mileage, than it is from me to pickup a high mileage one here in the USA.

Great video. Mine has 278K on the clock was also an ex demo, from Derek Warick Honda Southampton and regularly turns in 95 mpg on a 50 mile commute in warm weather, and thats with the IMA battery turned off. Honda's best kept secret! Lifetime average 75.4 mpg.

Hi Jonny, second time watching this excellent video & I feel compelled to comment!.... I do love hearing the updates on the varied & eclectic mix of cars in your fleet. As someone who”s daily driver for the past 7 years & 80k Miles is a CRZ - & previous owner of two DC2 Integra Type Rs (the last one ironically also selling back to Honda for their Heritage Fleet!) The Insight is of particular interest to me, & I would really like to sample one first hand. The CRZ is a very likeable & stylish car with some great features & similar excellent build quality, but it certainly isn’t the result of a company going all obsessive (& forgetting there was a bottom line to meet) like Honda did with the Insight - & the Integra for that matter! Definitely both from an era of ‘peak’ Honda! Your video reminds me that I need to get involved with ‘cycling’ the IMA battery in the CRZ, I believe Peter Perkins now hires out his ‘rig’ to carry out this process. I do love & agree with your philosophy of keeping a vehicle going for as long as possible. With so much energy & resources required to create a new car, it makes a lot of sense, especially when the car in question is very economical, to maximise the useful life from it, it seems people would prefer to spend £500+ paying for month for a car they’ll never own, than £500 once a year to get a car through the MOT, just to keep up with the Jones’ in the nursery car park.

I got one but with GTV. Same colour too. Absolutely mint. Built in Dec 1999 imported from Japan to NZ and also faint hints of decals so also a demonstrator car. But mine is factory standard. Fully functional and no mods at all.

This is 1000 better than a Prius. A truly fantastic, efficient well engineered car

I currently have a 21 plate Honda CR-V Hybrid E-HEV SR spec and I just love this SUV this is my first Honda as I have been a Ford man for years my current MPG 48.6 but in a few weeks time as we see some warmer weather that will be 50> MPG as last summer I hit 53 MPG also I should mention in the winter months I got above 47. Honda make great cars that just get the job done and will last 25 years plus if well maintained. I will be following you on this jouney and can't wait for the end result. Regards Alan B..

Great car and project! I’ve seen the odd one of these about but had no idea they were that cool! I do like Honda for this sort of thing.

Looking forward to this series Jonny! Aluminium does corrode quite badly once the surface layer has started to deteriorate because ali is often "alclad" -the surface is clad in a tiny thickness of pure aluminium which is much more corrosion resistant than the actual alloy that makes up the thickness of the sheet. The corrosion on the doors looks very similar to the "tin worm" that plagues old aeroplanes.

I might actually get one of these, I'd forgotten about them but they make perfect sense in the £2.00 per litre world we're in now. Looking forward to updates.

I remember your ev drag car (two words) "ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS ". Seeing the insight now makes me think it's more relative now than 20+ years ago, bring it back to life "RESTOMOD".

Great to see you back with this thing. I used to work at Thatcham Research and remember seeing it parked outside the crash lab when you visited doing something with Fifth Gear. Cool car, good luck resurrecting it.
