My mom's mentor in the broadcasting business had been a dive-bomber pilot in the Pacific during the Second World War. He had quit smoking in his 60s and became very health-conscious, watching what he ate and swimming every day, but lung cancer got him anyway. At least he kept his sense of humor... very late in life he told me it struck him as ironic that he had survived the entire Imperial Japanese Navy only to get taken out by the Marlboro Man. Heck of a guy...
