there is a math error in the text portion - I have "8 quarts is a gallon" but it should be "8 quarts is 2 gallons" it all still came out the same in that it was spraying 10 quarts in a minute rather than the 8 expected. In the grand scheme this won't make any problems for the application. Also, the fact that I removed the screen doesn't change the bucket test. The draw was set to "off" during that part so the tank wasn't even engaged. Lastly, some think I was hard on this thing and I wasn't. Just like anything, I need to learn the tool and how to best use it. I said that towards the end. Happy 4th!

Sorry if I'm repeating a comment. Why can't you just time out 2 gallons and use that as your time(maybe 50 sec.) I think it would be more consistent and repeatable. But I'm just a simple guy and I like simple math that works every time without adjusting water pressure. Just throw her down 😎

I just bought my Dian N Spray this weekend. The first thing I did was to perform a 1-minute bucket fill. I did it multiple times, came out to exactly 2 gallons every time I did it. Yesterday, I marked off a 1,000 sq foot area (31.6 ft square) in my driveway and practiced covering it in 1 minute. Did I mention my wife thinks I'm crazy for "watering the asphalt"???? :-D

Good and helpful video. 👍🏼 I used my Ortho sprayer for Humic12 and RGS (combined) and it did good for me. I also got 2gals of water in a minute. During my test I had plain water in the container that it was sucking. I set mine to 1-2 and I was able to walk slower and got more water down. So far not too bad. It took me about 50 minutes with mixing, spraying and clean up for 5,900 sq ft.

FYI. The Ortho manual states: "...dispenses approximately {emphasis on approximately} 2 gallons of water per minute}..." Check "Things to Know" in the manual (tab 5). That is most likely the culprit. They do not state that it absolutely dispenses 2 gallons per minute; it's an approximate/estimate Mine is .52 per 2 gallons. I like my Ortho as it puts down the product nicely and with no or very little wind drift concern - the shower setting. I especially like how it really saturates the grass with the product. The only downside is you have to work the hose around the yard, but I've used dial sprayers for about 20 years now, so I have that down to a science now. Also, I like that I can move at a faster pace with the Ortho hose end sprayer as it puts out 2 gallons just under a minute vs the backpack sprayer. I like and use the shower output dial. Mine was around .52 seconds for 2 gallons.

I checked my Ortho sprayer and it was running nearly 3 gals per minute. I put a standard hose valve on the sprayer and was able to set it to a perfect 2 GPM. I tested the chemical tank uptake and it flowed perfectly at the 1oz setting. The sprayer may flow differently based on your home's water pressure. The valve I installed was plastic so I took a soldering iron and lightly melted the knob and the base together so it couldn't accidentally turn. I figured I could undo that if I ever needed to. Super Glue seemed a little permanent.

I know this is an old video however, I'm watching it to get an idea on how the hose-end sprayer works. Just a thought on why maybe you were getting more than 2 gal a minute. I first used it last week and it was chocking on the mix. Had to shake it a lot to get through the metal filter. Took that off today and it came pouring out. Just tried the Ortho today. Not the best experience. I think it's just because I mixed too much MicroGreen with RGS and Humic12. The spray was consistent for a few seconds then it was just water. Kept increasing flowrate, by the time I had it flowing I only had a quarter bottle left lol. I'll def have to do the MicroGreen separate or follow NXTGen recommendation of not mixing everything together.

Curious. Many products list application rates in Per Gallon and Per 1,000 SF. So, if the product says 1/2 ounce per gallon per 1,000 SF you would set the dial at 1/2 per gallon. Got it. But if the Flow Rate is 2 Gallons per Minute, then you have 30 seconds to spray 1,000 SF. Correct ?

I'd probably dilute your 6oz to 12oz in the Ortho container. Then apply at 6oz per gallon. You'll end up with the same 6oz per 1000sqft, but the mixture will be thinner and will flow better. You will have to stop more often though to refill the container.
@franke18332 жыл бұрын
If you dilute the solution your ratio is going to change . If you want 6 Oz per gallon and you add 6 Oz of water you are no longer spraying at 6oz of solution per gallon of water right?
@takenusername2 жыл бұрын
@@franke1833 I may have misspoke... The dilution is irrelevant. It's the gross amount of product that's important. So if you have 6oz diluted in 10 gallons, but you spray all 10 gallons in the same 1000sqft, that's the same as diluting 6oz in a gallon and spraying that gallon on the same area. I prefer a more diluted solution as it gives better coverage and control. Higher concentrations require more precision in the application.

If you knew the area you were spraying, and you know you want to put down 3oz in the given area, you just spray that area. I think in John 's video, he said to put the dial on 1 and just spray your product on the given area. 3 or 6 oz. Pete of GCI turf fame, also has a video on using a hose end sprayer.

@GlennMarshallRocks5 жыл бұрын
No. His first 2 tests were with the suction section set to "off". Screen would have made no difference since it was totally bypassed anyway. He also tested with the suction section turned on, in case bypassing it affected flow per minute at all. It had no effect, so, the screen had no effect on the water flow per minute at all. However, at 24:29 he says he finally read the label and it said it provided a flow of "approximately 2 gallons a minute", not exactly 2 gallons per minute... D'oh...! So, lots to do about nothting, apparently.

@1975oldschool4 жыл бұрын
Hi. I know this is an old video, but does it not dilute the product too much if you change the mixer setting on the sprayer since no matter what, 2 plus gallons of water is coming out every min. Example, this product calls for 6 oz for 1 gallon of water, but I set the dial to 3 oz (6 oz per 2 gallon), aren't I diluting by half? I feel like if you turn down the dial, you are diluting the product to much. Maybe this product doesn't care if diluted?
@wormhole3316 жыл бұрын
Gpm depends on your house pressure and flow. Mine get 2.6 Gpm but so what. That's the constant I use and base my calculations off. No reason to try and get 2gpm. I'm just glad that the oz application settings were dead on. I measured what it took out of the tank and on the 1oz setting I got exactly 1oz per gallon.
@thinkdad19126 жыл бұрын
Another measurement option that I've always liked for smaller areas, is if I am spraying 2 gallons per minute and my math is ounces per gallon, then what I do is put in the number of ounces of product, then add the same amount of water to the tank. I feel like I end up with less waste in the tank since now whatever doesn't get sprayed is cut in half. Then you can change your dial to just be the number of ounces per gallon.
@donaldregnier61826 жыл бұрын
ThinkDad - yeah man you got Alan straightened out on that, for sure! The nozzle on the sprayer is the key to get your coverage required. The dial setting of 6 would fix 2 vs 3 gals. Good to go ... No sweat, JUST DO IT! I got 15Ksft and I just fill up the tank 8oz to gal not 6oz. Then dial into 6. I'm killin weeds and grasses. I say use a tad more concentrate and be sure to kill them broadleaf bastards! Additionally, feeding the yard the temperature needs to be well below 90.

I wouldn't go crazy with Milo thinking it's god's gift to mankind. Some of us might be better off with Starter fertilizer like Scotts at a 10-10-10. If you're lawn doens't have good root development then that might be the better option. Use a bulb planter to dig a 4 inch section up and check your roots. Water and fertilize accordingly. Milo is quite weak but good IMO for a well established lawn. Go with Starter fertilizer over the Scotts or Vigiro which load up on nitrogen. Starter fertilizer and scotts turf builder are almost the same price for 5000 sq ft. So use common sense and the correct product for your lawn. Don't just use Milorgonite all the time because you saw it on this channel.

If you (or anybody reading this) can help me, I would be extremely appreciative... I live in Colorado and had a brand new lawn put in last summer (Kentucky bluegrass) as well as a sprinkler system installed. Overall, my lawn looks great! But the section of lawn in my front yard seems to be developing patches of different grass... at first, I thought it was simply crabgrass. But after watching one of your previous videos on crabgrass, I am thinking that these patches may in fact be clumps of tall fescue (not 100% certain, but I sprayed them with crabgrass killer and nothing happened). Where did these patches of tall fescue come from and how the heck do I get rid of them?! The appearance and texture of this grass is distinctly different... it has a bluish green hue (which is what I thought Kentucky bluegrass was supposed to have) whereas the rest of my lawn has a deep forest green. My understanding is that anything I spray these patches with (assuming it is, in fact, tall fescue) will also kill the good grass. This lawn is less than a year old and I've treated it like my baby. It kills me to see these clumps of different grass popping up and ruining the aesthetic of an otherwise picture-perfect and immaculate lawn. Is it possible that the sod that was laid was "contaminated" from the very beginning? Could crap from my neighbor's lawn somehow be invading my lawn? It's worth noting that neither neighbor on either side of me takes care of their lawns. FYI... this problem seems to be localized to only one particular section of lawn in my front yard... the lawn on the other side of my driveway and my backyard remains (fingers crossed) unaffected.
@donaldregnier61826 жыл бұрын
James - KTY Bluegrass sod for sure, OK. Find the correct seed and overseed those areas with fescue and it will take over, just keep overseeing 2-4 times a year, so it's a small area, slam dunk dude! Otherwise roundup then use the KTY bluegrass seed. Get the sod company to give you the seed to fix it, or they come in and put in new sod, which you already paid for, damnit anyway.

I would of used the chemlawn nozzle, one you did show, water can type flow them the flat spray one. Larger droplets will produce a lot less drift and a much lower chance of breathing in the materials coming out that ortho spray gun. Larger droplets will get down to soil faster then fine ones.

Allyn, have you tried the Edgeit Pro? That was 3 awkward passes with no major difference- You would get to walk straight, upright and only one pass.

Yours sprayed a couple more quarts per minute, maybe because your water pressure is higher. The water pressure varies with every community. (hose diameter could affect it too- most are 5/8" but some are 1/2" or 1").

Doesn't the label say to apply it to lawns during blackout periods at a rate of 12-16 oz per 1000 sqft with a minimum dilution of 7:1?

Hey Allyn I have a question for you, I don't know if you have this problem with your echo trimmer or not, but I have an echo SRM-225 and whenever I go to edge with it I can edge for maybe a minute and the my trimmer shuts off and I think the gas floods the engine but I'm not sure but anyway I was wondering if you knew about any way to make that stop, and if you've ever had that same problem before thanks. Great video 👍👍👍

Caleb J 24 same thing happened to me. Until I saw a guy edge by holding it upside down. Now it never dies on me. Hope this help.

I have an Echo SRM 210 (i think). It's 10 years old and I just replaced the carburetor, fuel lines, fuel filter, air filter and spark plug. After doing all of that, mine still died on and off again if it was turned doing edging work. I did realize this past weekend that if the gas tank was completely full to start with it never died once. Maybe something to do with the angle of the gas in the tank and the fuel lines in the tank?

There is a hose that picks up the fuel from in the tank. Depending on which way you turn the trimmer sideways you either put the hose in the fuel or take it out of the fuel. Either turn the trimmer straight up and down or rotate it the other way when you edge.

Definitely going to vary on your water pressure coming from the main
