Absolutely agree on the vehicle mode, definitely feels more like an after thought, but in comparison to the last two molds we got, it looks leaps and bounds better (imo). I can't wait to see the Ratchet that will no doubt spawn from this. Also I couldnt agree more about that what is it? Titans Return Brawn? I have the same one in my collection and he's definitely starting to look his age in comparison to every other Autobot in my display who all got revamps in the WFC Trilogy

This is one of those times where I can appreciate the effort put into making this version of the figure for the people that want that more 'screen/animation accurate' appearance to go with the rest of the Studio Series 86 lineup but I don't need to get it. You can tell SS put more effort on the robot mode. I am fine with the Earthrise version, after going through a pain in the butt effort to get him at a decent price, seperate from Prowl who I didn't care for YET ANOTHER version of the Datsun brother mold (I have Bluestreak and Barricade for the Siege version, Smokescreen and Silverstreak for the Earth mode version). And personally since he is a security officer and bodyguard, I find the riot shield a fitting moderinzation to the character and his toughness.

THANK YOU!! Seriously, I've been seeing people praise this thing in both robot mode AND vehicle mode, left and right, and while I can appreciate the toon accurate bot, every time they get to the van and just heap praises on it, I keep finding myself screaming at my computer screen like "ARE YOU PEOPLE BLIND?!" And I mean, yeah, I GET IT. People were REALLY ANNOYED by the ER IH design. But I still felt that, aside from the exclusivity - the fact that you JUST COULD NOT GET HIM for a reasonable price - all of the problems with ER IH were EASILY SOLVED . . . and yet, SS86 IH just . . . DIDN'T: - ER IH was three-four different shades of red. They DIDN'T FIX THIS for this new figure! WTF HasTak?? - ER IH had a giant hinge on the rear exterior of van mode. HasTak ADDED TWO MORE GIANT HINGES to each side!! - ER IH had robot feet that were just hanging off the back of the van. MULTIPLE 3rd party creators have made really good mods to fix this. Hasbro could have retooled the figure to do the same, for a FRACTION of what it cost to make a new figure. - ER IH's paint apps were lacking, particularly the windows. So just . . . paint him better. Make the windows black. Yes, this would mean he's got painted windows on his legs, but again, minor retool alters which side of his leg faces front, or a fold-over panel to cover the windows, this would be solved, and again, cheaper than making a whole new figure. Meanwhile, S86 IH's back windows are STILL unpainted, poorly sized and located, AND he's missing his yellow stripe. - ER IH's shoulder sticking out of the side. Smooth the visible part, remove the mechanical detail greebles, and trim the shoulder at an angle so it appears like a window. This would not harm the appearance of the robot mode IN THE SLIGHTEST. - ER IH's design tolerances left gaps in places (particularly where his shield/sled connected to the top and became his roof). Minor retools could address this problem. And yeah, should have been addressed DURING PROTOTYPING, but whatever, they could fix it now. SS86 IH still has REALLY glaring panel lines, some of them diagonally cutting through windows like Classics Ironhide, a figure everyone seems to hate. And of course, LEFT AND RIGHT PANEL STAMPS IN THE WINDOWS!! All of these mods can easily be done by just a fan customizer with limited technical skill (and HAS BEEN, I've done most of it myself), so HasTak could have done it too. It would have shaved down the budget TREMENDOUSLY, allowed him to maintain a Deluxe price, and avoided the new issues like the extra hinges, no battle sled, knees sticking out at the bottom, and large sections of clear plastic. I was kinda bummed when I heard there was going to be an improved SS86 IH, 'cuz I'd put in the time and money to track ER IH down and mod him to be a better van, and he was supposedly going to be obsolete. Now? I'm glad. This new guy just DOES NOT work for me. With the Nonnef feet and wheels and battle sled mods and extra weapons, and with black windows and yellow stripes all the way around the back . . . I actually think the ER IH is a great figure!

this is kinda the issue with clear plastic with clear plastic you either need to paint the entire figure (which is what they did with cliffjumper its why the red is consistent on all of his parts and helps hide the amount of light that bleeds through the plastic) or just don't have clear plastic or have the clear plastic be an insert that goes into opaque plastic otherwise you get figures that look like they've been frankensteined together the van mode is meh but it does the job and isn't just horribly wrong (86 cliffjumper and 86 screamer) the robot mode is pretty much perfect the transformation is great but kinda sad the black magic that was mp hide and ratchet hasn't been added (those figures literally mass shifted IRL from tall leader sized robots to slightly smaller then current voyager vans)

Great video as usual. I love to see so much thought and constructive scrutiny poured into such a simple, unassuming and easily overlooked figure. “Sleeper bots” have always been some of my favorites. A badass looking racecar or tank transformer is always going to be cool. But when you take an everyday vehicle like a run of the mill SUV or plain old van and give it super awesome robot powers!, now you’ve peaked my interest. Sometimes I feel like a lot of collectors forget the magic in that. And Hasbro forgets it far too often.

Hi! I just wanted to ask how you get your prints to come out so clean? I've got a Lulzbot Mini 2 and I tried to make this upgrade kit with it. However, the lines that made up the grill drooped a bit, and the VW badge on the front didn't come out at all.

so in this video, the ones shown were made with a filament printer, but the grills with a resin printer. however, I have gotten moderately decent results with a 0.12mm layer height and tree suports in cura. if you go onto my twitter, there's a picture I posted where on a purple cutting mat that's entirely filament

I dunno, I kinda think you might be being a little harsh on this guy, at least when it comes to the vehicle mode. Then again, I'm not really much of a vehicle enthusiast, so maybe the problems you pointed out just seem smaller to me. I remember being excited for Earthrise Ironhide when I saw promotional pics, but after watching your review of the guy, I started to notice more problems with him. Then Hasbro revealed this guy who seemed to either fix, or at least attempt to address a lot of the issues the Earthrise figure had. But it kinda feels like you were harsher on this guy than the Earthrise figure. . . then again, maybe I'm just misremembering things. I might disagree with this review (when it comes to the vehicle mode I mean), but I still really enjoyed it, the vehicle mode being a bit bland color wise doesn't bother me to much, since G1 Ironhide kinda always looked like a red brick to me anyway. I don't usually mod toys, I dunno it just doesn't really feel right to me for some reason, or maybe I just don't have confidence in myself to do it properly, but if I do end up picking this up I may give modding the hip-skirt a try since it seems like a relatively simple fix that doesn't really detract from the look of the figure, or require too much work, just a careful hand (and make sure not to lose that that pin of course).

Damn man... When fans make stuff better than the parent company with millions of dollars behind them and a lot of creative talent. I swear its by design. If they went all out and produced figures that "had it all" or were near "perfect" than they couldn't dupe all us collectors with multiple versions of the same figure that make little improvements but still leave us wanting more . I'm definitely guilty of buying multiple versions of the same figure on many occasions. But yeah wish they would go that little bit extra with some of their designs.

I think you miss a point on the van mode, it's not supposed to look realistic by any stretch, it's supposed to look like a cartoon, just like all the other ss86 figures. It is a shame about the yellow stripe but other than that it's mostly cartoon accurate.

I was very pleased with this version of the figure, and I even got it at under deluxe price point ($22) because Black Friday lol. But my only issue is how much pressure is used to attach the chest piece with the leg plate at the top. And the worst issue is definitely the silver bumper on the bottom, my figure is already scratched. I would give him a solid 6.5/10 because good robot mode and looks nice

Ironhide is a pretty dull robot design and I have no attachment to the character because I find the first two seasons of the cartoon largely unwatchable. But I did pick up the figure on sale, and after I got him out of the box....He poses really well! Like effortlessly. The only parts that move are the ones you want to and he looks good in almost any pose. I will be doing some paint modifications to the van mode, but quite happy with my purchase. Man, I'm not used to this level of detailed analysis of vehicle modes from a design perspective with a bit of education on automotive history thrown in, and the photoshopped illustrations are very professional. Even as far as designing not one, but multiple new bumpers to alleviate the issues you found in the design. The psychology behind your design decisions was very methodical. Very well executed video.

I grew up with the bayverse ironhide, but this ironhide really like this ironhide. I'm still getting used to the van mode since the movie transformers have vehicle modes that reflects on their personality. But the engineering is impressive because it doesnt involve the stupid roof parts forming. edit: also how do you properly remove those pins like the one on the bumper? I'm mostly referring to those flathead pins like on wheels and joints. I have figures that are broken (I can fix it with superglue) but the flathead screw gets in the way and I cant remove it.

I don't really see what is so bad about the vehicle design, except yes that rear window, and the various shades of red which would be solved if they would JUST STOP MAKING CLEAR/OPAQUE WINDOWS, PAINT IS FINE!

I absolutely agree with the "robot body made of vehicle parts" bit. It's a robot coming from a vehicle. I want to see how that turns into a robot and it NOT be shell/faux parts. Like, Optimus Prime. I almost never like Semi Truck Primes that DON'T have a flat-fronted cab like the original G1, unless they do something like Laser Optimus (or RiD01 Scourge or Toxitron) which gives him shoulder cannons, or Armada Prime where the front of the cab becomes bulky shoulder armor to make him look beefy. Bayverse Prime, it just kinds disappears into the rest of the visual noise of his body.

They need to get rid of the toon accuracy astheic, as far as colorway is concerned. It hurts vehicle mode. That hip skirt mod is sweet btw…
