When Hasbro gives you fake parts, make Hasbro take the fake parts back! Get mad! I don't want your dang faux parts! What am I supposed to do with these?! Demand to see Hasbro's manager! Make Hasbro rue the day it thought it could give Lazy Eyebrow fake parts! Do you know who I am?! I'm the man who's going to animate a proper transformation...with the fake parts!

- good LORD what is happening in there?! - a pracitcally engineered transformation! - A-... A practically engineered transformation?! with no fake parts, a fully accurate vehicle mode, and a fully articulate robot localized entirely within your factory? - ....yes! - may I animate with it? - ......no

You're basically a magician revealing his tricks. Seriously, the way you do these are clever and amazing. Thanks for the tutorials so far.

For all intents and purposes, it is a magic trick. All the key bits of sleight of hand, direction, angles, hiding what you don’t want the audience to see, are in his transformation animations. Using angles, misdirection, and taking advantage of how our brains work, he is able to make us believe a toy is doing the impossible and actually transforming like they do in the shows.

I came to say something very similar. Usually when you find out how a magic trick works it is kind of disappointing but in this case I am fascinated and it draws me in deeper.

I could not have said this as good as you have. I lurk the transformers reddit and see my fair share of Transformers stopmotions, most of which are transformations. 90% of the time, its step by step transformations, which while I think they can work on Bayverse figures, doesn't work on others. My advice I gave was along the lines of, "Think about where the parts are going to be in robot and alt mode at the beginning and end of the transformation, and move the parts along a path from the beginning to end." This video perfectly explains what to do and I love it.

Thank you for this! I used to literally do EVERY STEP of the transformation when I first did stop motion because I thought it looked cool, but the outcome said otherwise. I sometimes do fancy transformations to be dramatic, but sometimes, you just gotta love the g1 transformations

I love this video! Even though I don't do stop motion myself, I do have a passion for it, and whenever someone manages to nail a quick and seamless transformation through trickery like this, it blows me away. I actually noticed how Mirage was animated transforming in the last video and was impressed with how smooth it looks, despite the whole figure suddenly being rotated backwards. While faux parts can understandably be annoying, I think in some cases in stop motion they help to replicate the way parts morph in impossible ways in the original cartoon.

It's these stop motion animation tricks that truly combine the toy engineering, the simple smoothness of most cartoon transformations, and the admittedly realistic fluidity of the live-action transformations, since these are live-action objects, all together. Also, the explanation of how Optimus's grill waist chonks out between frames do illustrate what kinds of faux parts work and Mirage's everything shows which ones don't. One's imagination is more capable of accepting that the waist could expand and that it's achieved by some good ol' unholy engineering sorcery. The fact that Mirage's transformation relies on tricking the brain more means that the imagination also has to take multiple gymnastic leaps in both modes. Your mind will always tell you that this isn't that sorcery, and it will nag at you.

I've been wanting to make a video about this for a few months now. I wanted to use ER Cliffjumper and Netflix Bee to show that toy-like transformations aren't that great in animations, and cheating could improve the look and the smoothness of it (and make the partsforming disappear in this case). That's a trick I learnt a few years ago I used so many times, it's really useful, even when parts aren't clearly visible on the robot mode. For example, I once made CW Ultra Magnus transform by having the truck cab thrusting out of his chest, and the trailer transforming behind. But since we're looking at the cab, everything looks convincing. I also used the figure-changing trick with a few figures (Netflix Bee into G1 Bee, Siege Optimus into Studio 38 Optimus, Studio VW Bee into Movie Deluxe Bee and next on my channel, Siege Megatron into RTS gun Megatron) and that's always so fun to make! I may not do the best animations on KZbin but I sure am proud of "making animations" more than "showing toys transforming with many pictures".
