The optimal method to ensure moisture retention involves constructing a pole with a plastic sheet backing to trap the moisture and utilizing a filling material that readily absorbs water and remains moist for an extended period. Personally, I have discovered that a mixture of Tree Fern Fibre and Sphagnum moss effectively retains moisture over a considerable duration.

Thank you so much! You have inspired me again because I bought a large self watering pole from Etsy (and it was expensive!) that had a plastic tube running down the center for you to pour water into. It dried out constantly and had very little moss in it. I just chucked it somewhere in a closet never to be used again. Now you have taught me how to open it up and take that tube out, fill it up and slap some plastic on the back, and I have a very useful and tall pole. Thank you! And PS, how big of a difference does the tree fern fiber make when it comes to the pole drying out?

PSS, my giant Hawaiin Pothos that I put on my newest moss wall are looking awfully limp and sad compared to how my monstera looked a week later. They had both been through the long process and both had good looking roots and roots on the new water roots. Is that normal for pothos to react that way?

You got it, Nora! I knew you would! I finally got some self-watering pots with the indicator. I've only transferred one plant so far, and it's probably a good thing because I forgot to add the string! LOL Now I have to redo it. But better just one vs five of them! Where do you get the tree fern fiber? I would really like to mix some into my moss poles!

Thank you for all your videos on leca and moss poles, you have helped me heaps! Could I please ask is it possible to substitute the moss + tree fern fibre with leca instead? So that leca would extend from pot at the bottom all the way through the pole and because leca wicks water a little we may not have to water the pole much at all? Perhaps its too good to be true! You can use moss only. Leca poles are difficult to keep moist. It is possible but I found to be difficult.

Amazon sells poles with plastic backing. They look smaller then yours. But do you think that they would be suitable ?
