It's 2023 now, and I'm 66 yrs old. I've watched this more times than I can imagine. It still makes me teary eyed, even though it's been 30 yrs now since he signed off. I grew up watching most of his shows. God, I sure wish all of those guys were still with us, and in their prime. I know that's a ridiculous thought, but I'm just dreaming. They were a big piece in my heart. Thank you Johnny and the rest of the guys for all of the incredible memories. Doc is now 96, and he's the last one standing. As a former trumpet player, he was my favorite my entire life. God, the Tonight Show Band was SO hot. We'd often times ask each other, 'did you catch Johnny last night'? As has been noted many, many times - there will NEVER be anyone else that'll even come close to Johnny. The guy was so great at what he did. Thanks Johnny. You will forever be in my heart. There's nothing like laughter, and he provided lots of it for us.

I also grew up with Johny. My parents would never let me stay up to watch him. For one it was way past my bedtime and it was just not a children's LOL. Anyway I begged and begged and finally they agreed to let stay up to watch Johny, I'll never forget the first show they let me watch. One of Johny's guest was Arnold Palmer and his wife. At that time Arnold was the golf king. Johny asked Arnolds wife if she did anything before Arnolds match for good luck and she said I kiss his balls. Johny gave that look that let you know he was about to say something that would probably get him in trouble So with that look he said I bet that makes his putter stand up on end. I hit the floor as my parents and I cried so hard from laughter. I'm in tears now just remembering all the Wonderfull shows the tonight show brought into our home and lives. Thanks Johny for the memories you are so missed and never forgotten. Johny was to late night talk shows like the Beatles were to music.

@@1bbbeardsley1I can’t believe it’s been 31 years - that’s longer than the show ran, and it ran for a long long time. I’m 59, so I really didn’t know what was going on until the early 70’s, after he moved to Burbank and almost halfway through his run already, and then could only stay up to watch on Fridays, until I got older. Johnny was so consistently funny. He never overshadowed his guests, he complimented them, but could be so hilarious in his own right when he needed to be. His knack to find just the right ad lib, just the right timing, the facial expressions - unmatched. It’s just an amazing talent, and no one who followed him, or has competed with him, has even come close. I liked Letterman, but his was a different, edgier and sarcastic kind of humor that detracted from his guests at times. Leno was fine but bland, and late night really hit the toilet after those two guys hung it up.

I am sure of it now! I got introduced to talk shows through Jay Leno and what little of David Letterman we used to get here in India in early 2000's and I stumbled upon the inventor and the greatest performer in the space of talk shows only 2022 to realise how pretentious and unnatural today's talk shows are. Jimmy Kimmel, Fallon, Colbert, Conan, Leno, Letterman all of them combined would never add up to the tiniest particle of the talk show Giant that Carson was. Blessed to have these videos on YT!

In 2024 and I’m 72 now. Watching these wonderful, wonderful shows, sometimes the memories of a first watch comes to mind. For so many reasons, from the performances of those now gone to the moments of ‘life’ captured--politics, news events, technology, and morals of times long gone. Thanks to all who worked in front of and behind the cameras. In the early 1980’s I briefly worked in that industry and one of my favorite memories was a guided tour of ‘NBC Burbank’. Just an editor and myself. No, I didn’t sit at his desk, that would have been disrespectful. But I did stand right behind his chair,taking in the view he had so many times of his world. Johnny Carson was the reason we put a TV in our bedroom back in the 1960's. Listening to his monolog & either staying awake to catch a particular guest he had on that night or you closed your eyes & fell asleep. The Tonight Show also provided subtle light for late night sexual activities too. "Here's Johnny" often meant more than his walking out on stage.....lol.

My parents had a VHS tape of that last episode. I never really got to watch him, but my Boomer parents did. Just like many Boomers, Silent, and Greatest generation people that was something if you stayed up late at night to watch for many years. He was it at 10:30 at night that you could laugh at his monologue and then go to bed for work the next day or stay up for the entire hour. After that show, he essentially got to live his life in privacy and seclusion that not many people in the industry were able to do. He left out on his own terms and enjoyed his retirement. Sadly the years of smoking finally bit him in the ass. Emphysema took him in 2005 at age 79 and he always complained to his younger brother about those damn cigarettes. Speaking of his younger brother he would go on to live until 2021 at age 92. Luckily there is still all those years thanks to the internet and syndication licenses by NBC that you can still watch clips and shows due to modern technology.

It's now 30 years ago as I write this since Johnny Carson's last Tonight Show - it's been that long!! The king of late night - he was so good, great guests, great skits. I especially liked stump the band - Doc was a hoot and Johnny was great working the audience. Except for Doc all of his Tonight Show colleagues have passed - it was a golden age, but as always golden ages come to an end. The Tonight Show has never been as good since he left and probably never will be.

The musical look back was pretty remarkable. Judy Garland and Dizzy Gilespie to Elton John and Whitney Houston. Frank sinatra and Benny Goodman to Paverotti, Dolly Parton, and BB king. That's absolutely incredible. I'm so glad that so much of Carson's work has been persevered. I am fortunate to be able to watch it now, even though I was born 5 years after this was filmed.

On his final night as host of his "Tonight" show, Mr. Carson looked elegant and was emotionally exhausted from the final week of shows building up to the grand finale. He was one of a kind. Television was BIG, but Mr. Carson was BIGGER. Thanks for sharing this great moment.

His son died the year before taking photos along the hwy and that was I believe the last photo he took before he died. It is known in film and print how reviews can cause entertainers and authors etc harm so I think that was Johnny's farewell to his boy and a fuck you to his haters.

I really miss watching a great late night tv program at the end of a long work day before falling asleep. There hasn't been one worth watching in many, many years unfortunately. Everyone here agrees., Johnny Carson was a one-of-a-kind master at the art of making people laugh and he had a class about him that was unique to only himself. I remember watching him a youngster and watching him here brings back memories of a simpler time and a more carefree time in my life. We all love you Johnny.

I remember watching this show. I was in college and at a bar at the time. I never really watched Johnny but always noticed my parents laughing watching him growing up. I saw this show and knew it was the end of an institution.
