Fun fact: Gozen was not her family name, Gozen meant Lady in Japanese.

Extra fun fact, people in that period often did not use their "given name" publicly, and women especially, so likely "Tomoe" was just an alias/nickname/title.

Our history in schools is so underrepresented. At least I’m America, we seem to cover up facts to not paint things that were bad or otherwise much more serious in nature. Many great figures are also under represented. I recall spending two weeks on Muhammad and the rise of Islam. You could sum up that guy in a few minutes as there was little facts presented of the over embellished story. Meanwhile in Asian history we just covered this era a few facts, then that era a few facts, oh Hiroshima and a while there. But wait? What about the architecture, society technology, and accomplishments. Nope let’s spend 2 weeks on the Great Wall of China but not Chinas other great history. I myself would have love a history class on legendary figures. No not the ones who industrialized America or took credit for building a nation. The people on the bottom who created inventions, innovated daily life events, highly notable in battle but not major conflicts, and of course medicine. Our youth basically have to come here or today I found out to learn of these things. Not indoctrination of religious foundations around the world. At least reveal on a factual level the wrongs and rights of religious notions. I mean there is a hell of a major rap sheet on some, won’t say it here it’s obvious. Like plagiarize many religions to embolden your own or hide the fact say Buddha said he was in search of God. Not that he was a god and mislead a whole country on that notion.

Thanks for the video! Everytime one is prone to think one has heard most of the myths already you come along with something fresh and awesome and new (at least to me). I love your videos as basis to look deeper into the myths and storys you summarize and for drawing inspiration (your taste/choice of illustrations for your videos is impeccable! It´d be great if you could link some of the artists profiles every now and again, but I totally get that this might be a bit much to ask given your uploadschedule and the overall quality of your content) In the light of this honest praise, there is one thing that could use some work in my opinion - the cadence and speed of your voice is rather slow and monotonous making it very hard (for me) to concentrate on what you are saying. I am saying that despite being genuinly interested in the topic you are talking about but I often find myself pausing your video half way through and just reading about the topic myself. (might really be a personal preference kind of thing so don´t sweat it to much in any event) audioquality and everything else is allready great! If you look to improve even further you might want to look into this.

The onna-bugeisha (女武者), literally “female martial person”, were a class of noblewomen and members of the warrior class (bushi, 武士) in feudal Japan. They were trained in both traditional household arts and self-defense and fought alongside samurai men. During Japan’s feudal period, many samurai families found themselves in need of extra protection. As a result, they began training their daughters in the art of war. These women became known as onna-bugeisha - the female samurai. While they did not fight as often as their male counterparts, the female samurai were considered just as skilled in battle. But despite their skills and bravery, they are not well known outside of Japan. The female samurai were also not as well-known as the male samurai. Ye5 still played a significant role in Japanese history. The first female samurai are thought to have appeared during the Genpei War (1180-1185). This was a time of great upheaval in Japan, as two powerful clans-the Taira and the Minamoto- battled for control of the country.

Unlike others, she was trained for both offensive and defensive actions. Jesus Christ. That’s like saying most samurai women were trained to write but not to read. All combat is killing them before they kill you. Period. Whatever your strategic or even tactical stance, when it comes to combat, especially muscle-powered combat, there’s no such thing as being a little bit killed. Or being five percent of a killer. And while it can sometimes be hard to tell who the winner of any given sword fight is, there is no problem at ALL distinguishing the loser. Or losers. End of the day, a killer is a killer, badass is a badass. Tomoe Gozen was a card carrying badass who had tremendous talent and skill at a trade most people like her only plied part-time, but there’s no reason to think there weren’t many other women like her who were every bit as willing and skilled, but who made different choices, just like there are plenty of folks today who are damned fine shots, with training and combat skill, who didn’t choose to enter the military. All of these women were training to defend their homes and children against the very real possibility of an enemy attack. You think they didn’t take that pretty training pretty damned seriously? Do you think that it wasn’t their /identity/ to be good at what their friends, families, and culture required of them? Odds are good that /any/ of those samurai mama bears could mop the /walls/ with your average US male today. They lived in a much more unforgiving world, and they were professionals, by trade, by culture, and by tradition. Tomoe Gozen may have been in the spotlight, like Ronda Rousey is today: but don’t think for a moment that she didn’t come from an entire culture of professional-grade female fighters, just like Ronda does.

Fun fact - she probably didn't exist. She didn't show up for hundreds of years after she was thought to have lived. And she only showed up in fables. Maybe she was real, maybe not. But people should know that there is no evidence to prove that she did exist, much less do the things they say. I have a Tomoe figure in my collection, so I am not trashing her, just making it clear that she might not have been "for real" and people should know that you are talking about a fable.

@k-matsu
@k-matsu 5 жыл бұрын
@@joepkortekaas8813 Legend is almost always based on a core story with basis in fact. Many of the stories in the Kojiki provide glimpses of things confirmed by history. Take the story of Yamato Takeru, for example. The story says that his first important contribution was the defeat of a tribe of semi-monstrous people called the "Kumaso", in southern Kyushu. The stories say that these people were hairy and filthy -- the color of dirt. They were completely unlike the people in the Yamato clan, and lived in "holes in the ground". It sounded like just some fairy tale, and was treated as such, until the 20th century, when people began studying architectural sites in Kyushu. Discoveries now show that there were an original race of people with Melanesian characteristics, living in Southern Kyushu (dark skin and curly hair), who built houses that were recessed into the earth (like "holes in the ground"). These architectural sites seem to disappear around the first or second century AD. So yes . . . . . there is plenty of "factual" information in the Kojiki. It just isnt "factual" in the sense of modern historical accounts -- it is more like a novel based on history, with factual background but fictional protagonists.

@@joepkortekaas8813 WTF are you talking about? For one thing, women in Japan have ALWAYS taken part in war -- some Daimyo had entire retinues of female-only fighters. Tomoe Gozen was by no means the only famous one More importantly, prior to the Meiji era, women's status in Japan was far higher than in most countries. In Edo era, women made up almost half of the students in most schools, and women owners of businesses were commonplace . . . unlike in Europe. There were several female Emperors, and numerous women who served as the head of a major family, at some point in time. Minamoto no Masako (the wife of Yoshitomo) was the leader of the Kamakura Bakufu following her husband's death, and was one of the major figures that controlled things until her son (Sanetomo) reached maturity, and then after Sanetmo was murdered, she was again appointed as Regent until her nephew reached maturity. Although she never was recognized as "Shogun", it was HER orders that the samurai class followed until her son reached maturity, so after her death people referred to her as "Ama no Shogun" (the nun Shogun). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H%C5%8Dj%C5%8D_Masako It was only the introduction of Western cultural norms that changed this situation in Japan. Secondly, the term "samurai" refers to the class . . . not the individual. Therefore OF COURSE there were women samurai. Any woman married to, or the daughter of someone from the samurai class was -- by definition -- a member of the samurai class herself. Quit talking shit when you dont know shit about shit.

Tōmōë Gōzën = Toe-Moe-eh Gōz-ehn! Like TEN/10! Not like aluminum or aluminum! It’s called ANNUNCIATION! Please, just take a few minutes to learn the language of which you wish to talk about! It only takes a few short minutes, of the deeply serious studying that you do to confirm these stories. Sorry! I know I expect more from “educated” peoples from a “higher” civilization! But seriously, please just take a few minutes to learn the annunciations of the culture/people/language of which you would like to talk about. It really only takes a few minutes to do. I’ve learned a few different languages and I just listened to the native speakers few times to help annunciate properly. It’s really not that hard. It really should be easy considering English is made up from every major language in the world. I apologize for coming off as an ass, I’m just tired of that “lazy-ass generation” not even trying!!!

Your title, Japanese history explained, is wrong, in Japanese history there never was a Tomoe Gozen! She was only mentioned in the romance the Heike monogatari, written decades after the events, and not in any official Japanese history! These monogataris were often written by women, like the Genji monogatari, and often based on orally handed down stories. Furthermore, samurai was a rank - if a daimyo considered a fighter worthy to become a samurai, a proposal to that effect was sent to the shogun for approval. Many times the shogun would not allow the promotion, e.g. based on ancestry. What do you think the chances were of the shogun approving the promotion of a mere women to samurai, in very male chauvinistic Japan? Zero! Tomoe Gozen is up there with King Arthur, Guinevere, Sir Galahad, Beowulf and the Pied Piper!

@@weirdscience8341 I didn't know that there was a female samurai and it is great to know about it as most depictions of female japanese warriors were kunoichis (if I am not mistaken). I think this channel deserves a great respect for this.

Regarding what Tomoe's fate was after Yoshinaka was defeated by the Tairi is most likely she was captured then raped or killed. You may be wondering how this female specimen who's legends are so great that she is worth 1000 samurais would fall as such instead of committing all the great deeds she did after the fall of Yoshinaka? Well the answer can be said in 1 word, "PROPAGANDA" which was propagated during the Meiji era just like when the Meiji govt made Musashi Miyamoto into a god like figure. Dont get me wrong, Musashi was a great samurai and philosopher but a lot of his past was quite murky until the Meiji govt came out with a detailed account of his life story. Similar to Musashi, I dont disagree that Tomoe was a great fighter but lets be honest here, women back then were only brought to battles for 1 purpose and that is SEX. Yes I would not be shocked to find out Yoshinaka stuck his katana inside Tomoe san specially with how they described her beauty. Western Armies had follower camps with prostitutes and the US Army made the entire South East Asia its follower camp, I wouldn't be surprised if Yoshinaka called upon Tomoe for some LATE NIGHT DE-BRIEFING. The point is if you check the records you will find more statements about how beautiful Tomoe san was instead of her military records and they only talk about her in detail after the fall of Yoshinaka. If she is so beautiful, why the HELL would you want her to charge into battle? Would you send Hitomi Tanaka or Anri Okita head first to the enemy lines? OH HELL NOOOOOO! That hot azz is stayin right behind me where its safe then I'll fondle those babies later after the battle.

Don't be feminist! Tomoe became a samurai just because her father had no son. In later samurai times it was inadmissible for a woman to be a samurai. And after the Taira clan was defeated and her husband killed, Tomoe didn't take her life so she lost her samurai title and honor. So Tomoe cannot be considered a samurai.
