Wanted to try this out for a long time, to see the effects of the oil. It was pretty clear to me from the start, that if oil got inside the HDD, it would fail. but i wanted to see how long it would run.
on this old 1.7 Gb disk, it ran atleast the whole evening... and then during the night it died.

Outrageous! I would have thought the oil would have disolved certain important plastics.

Tom's hardware that originally published the idea of the oil PC stated that all the fans should be removed instead to add a pump to circulate the oil. Also the socket based CPUs need to be sealed along the edges. They didn't do that in this demo.

@Raffix394 you gotta get the generic stuff, and as alwase make sure its it does not conduct electricity.

No, distilled water would not work as well, and I would be quite hesitant with anything water based. Mineral oil is the best since it does not require air to dissipate the heat, does not evaporate since it is a byproduct of crude oil, does not go "bad," and has a very low viscosity level. And the reason for the fans would to help keep the liquid less viscous, (even if it is fairly low to begin with, always good to keep up the circulation.

@MrAber28 Hmm are you shure baby oil is the same? I mean the basic oil proably yes but I guess they add a lot of stuff in baby oil like perfume and other substances that might not be good for your hardware.

@reap62 motoroil wont burn... at least not with those tempertures in a pc not even with the 'hardcoriest' hardware, you can even extinguish a cigarette in it, it's designed to withstand the heat of a gasoline/diesel engine without burning.

I've been told that, seems like a pretty good idea, except I don't know of a pump that can move it around as smoothly as water. If there is a pump like that, that would dominate. :)

i once did the same thing, put i was afraid to put the psu in there.. so i didn't do it.. so there is only the motherboard in there.. that is more than a half year ago and it still runs fine.. that the hd would die in the oil should have been clear.. it has a breathing hole for air

I tryed this with a Intel Pentuim (the first of the pentuims) with 256MB ram, 64MB video card, 320W PS,120GB 3,400RPM IBM HDD (but kept it out of the oil) and its still running after 48 hours! very slowly though and the screen is fizzing out a bit.

You don't need those fans in there, they're not serving any purpose. Technically you should be able to do the same with distilled water, because the minerals in the water are actually what conducts the electricity.

I wouldn't do this entire PC in liquid in any case whether with oil or water. I was talking theoretically that you could use distilled water, but your correct water will dissipate over time. It's also foolish to fill the case with oil then continue to run all the fans in the case, they really don't serve any purpose, the oil slow them down quite a bit.

Erm, that was vegetable oil, and that was (i'm sorry) the worst idea ever. It gets moldy fairly quickly, quite viscous, and for obvious reasons needs to be replaced often. The reason why they removed was the fans was only so that they would not burn out since vegetable oil is so heavy.

your not suposed to put the drives /hard drives/psu in thats why it failed you have to put the mobo in and componets and strip out all the fans

In terms of protecting the cpu, almost all CPU's from 99 to present are socket based, and that is completely wrong about sealing them... It makes absolutely no difference. I mean, if you actually have to seal the CPU, then you already have problems with the chip, the gold shouldn't be exposed so much that it needs to be protected again. Either way, I know for a fact that it does not effect the CPU at all if it is not sealed, (first hand, multiple times, experience, albeit AMD or Intel).

Not foolish at all, I am currently running a mineral oil server, as seen on leetupload dot com under tutorials (the 1337 fleet). It runs cooler than with simply air and exhaust fans. Much more efficient, and is completely silent.

AHAHAHA of course no sound, why'd u put the speaker in there? and there are vent holes on harddrives, and yes the oil eventually leaked in through them, and the second it touched the read head it crashed down and scraped the platter ruining the disk. it doesnt take much, one time i opend a hard drive, breathed on it, and the condnsation from my breath was enough to make it crash and never turn on again.

Where do I even begin, you should of NEVER used car oil. That's one of many settings you used for disaster. NEVER submerge the HDD, nobody else has for a reason. I don't understand the speaker idea, WTF?!? You need more then one fan to cirulate, the oil to the entire system.
