I sometimes wonder what it would be like to be some hypothetical monster who stalks you throughout these maps. Just watching you from a distance as you talk to yourself about every aspect of the map you like or dislike to an audience the monster can't see. Someone should make a liminal map like this, big and spooky with dark corners. In that map, there's a single NPC who wanders around and as he does, he slowly peeks around corners, slowly opens doors searches every room, pointing and getting excited for certain things and getting annoyed by others. The NPC appears to be talking to himself the whole time, exclaiming with his hands. If you, the player, are seen by this NPC, he'll get scared, but if you can sneak up behind him, you'll find that he's actually just playing ("speaking") audio from one of these Liminal GMOD explore videos.

With every new GMOD video I'm amazed by how an almost 20 year old engine still looks so damn good when it comes to industrial outdoor and indoor areas. There's just something about Source that no other engine or technology has managed to reach yet, that makes it feel so photorealistic for me compared to today's engines -- if you don't look to close obviously. I can't point out what it is exactly but I feel like it's mostly the sky- and ambient lighting and maybe the color-grading. Today's engines can throw as many raytraced technologies in their scenes as they want but while they look incredibly beautiful, it just doesn't match the photorealism that Source has for me. Maybe it's because the real world isn't always "beautiful"...

This reads to me as either a past or future of the first Liminal Space map. Your boulder vs. boiler “rambling” makes a lot of sense to me. I understand the dream logic behind it and there is a poetic sense of change in there. For example, boulders are part of nature and boilers are part of industry, which can suggest the theme of nature vs. industry or natural vs. artificial. I think of it almost like an environmental metaphor where we see the natural world reclaiming a space that was once the domain of industry or modernity. Another perspective could be that the space was built to accommodate both concerns of industry and nature, which are frequently seen as these fundamentally conflicting concepts or realities. This is quite the threshold between those ideas. There’s a lot we can think about as a result of these spaces, which is awesome.

I find it a little funny that this version of the map feels less creepy. Like all the default debris, fire particles, & bloody bits makes it feel more at home in the source world... like I'm just playing normal HL2 or TTT instead of some horror map, but then at other points tbh the rust & orange redish fog makes it feel like a silent hill game we never got.

My interpretation from this video: this map feels like someone that's trapped in the liminal space version of this map suddenly dreams of reality, their wishes to escape. It tries to make it more linear as the brain tries to apply logic in an already too absurd enviorment. But it ends up making the dreamer remember that place is a prison, and the fears of not knowing whats outside manifest "subconciously". 'Is everything ok? What about my family? Why does no one contact me? Is the world gone?' idk.

It took me a while, but I finally learned how to find, and setup Garry's Mod, and as many of the liminalesque type maps as I could find. I'm legally blind, so it's proving difficult to work with many of the interfaces, as they have tiny text. At least G-Mod allows the use of Windows Magnifier, so I'm slowly, sort of figuring stuff out. Haven't figured out how to use the product without the big laser gun in view, though. By the way, have you given much thought to reading for Recording House for the Blind, or volunteering to read at your state's Public Broadcasting Service's Radio Reading Service for the Blind (subcarrier)? You have a very good broadcast quality voice, and if you read as well as you describe things in these games, you'd be a valuable asset in the mass communications field. NPR would likely pick you up, once you've got enough experience. Anyhoo, I'll be checking out your Discord, soon. Thanks for the video. :)

I remember as a kid I had a dream where I was in this pure white “house” that was completely empty besides one room that had those kids toy blocks that have letters or number on them colored red, green and blue. It also had the blues clues chair sitting in the center which was surrounded by maybe 4-6 of the pre-described blocks. The rest of the house was made up of the empty rooms with extraordinarily tall ceilings I would guesstimate about 15-20 ft high and the room could vary between gigantic and regular sized. I had this dream multiple times and in only one instance did I ever actually get outside the house and outside the house looked a lot like that one scene in Beetle Juice when the husband and wife ghosts try to leave their house and it’s a barren desert with weird fauna. I never was able to explore it though as I guess I was to scared or maybe locked to the house. My grandma has a picture of me from when I was young and in the picture I am in what looks like a pure white room and I’m leaning on those child cubes I mentioned earlier and these were also huge probably 4ftx4ftx4ft. The weird part is I have no recollection of taking that picture and I have what I would consider a above average memory even some from very young years but I have absolutely no clue when or where I took that photo(I was probably 5-6yrs old). It’s weird to look back at all this knowing what I know now about liminal spaces. I will try and have that dream again and explore more. If I do eventually have the dream again and can explore more I will reply to this comment with what I find interesting.

I also don’t have dreams very often and so I looked it up just a little and what I found is that if you consume stuff like caffeine, weed, alcohol or tobacco frequently it for some reason makes you dream less. I’ve tried not doing the listed things and found that I did actually dream more when not consuming them.
