A long virtual walk through the desolate streets that make up rp_asheville, an absolutely MASSIVE post-apocalyptic roleplaying map for Garry's Mod, made by VanderAGSN. This one had me more on edge than any map before it. The immersion offered by the Index, combined with the hours it took to explore the map, allowed the oppressive atmosphere to wear me down in a way I haven't experienced before. If you get motion sickness, try watching in windowed mode.

@MyFoot 3 жыл бұрын
@@chee.rah.monurB to give you a sense of how large this map is. An average map is somewhere between 50-200 megabytes. (MB), Some maps that he has played on (GM_liminal_hotel, and GM_liminal_space) are 150MB and 63MB respectively. The default gm_construct is something like 10-20mbs. So this map is 1800MB, 10 to 20 times larger than most "detailed" maps. Garrys mod itself is only 5 gigabytes (5000MB) so this map alone is aprox. 1/3 the size of the entire garrys mod game. The map is absolutely massive.

41:28 had an experience like this with my family when I was 10 we went to a restaurant at like 9pm after driving around the whole day. We went in cashier took our order we went and as seating wasnt a problem cus we were the only people there besides the 2 or so employees we sat down in a booth in the back corner. Dad was called up to get our food and we ate for like 15 to 20 minutes. As we left me, my sister, and dad wanted to refill our sodas so walked over to the counter. Nobody was there. We could see most if not all of the kitchen and nobody was in there either. All the lights were still on so my dad called out into the kitchen if anyone was still around. No response. Went home and even as we pulled out nobody came out of the kitchen as far as I could see from my view of the front window of the building. Shit really creeped me out and I found out the place shut down like a month later.

It's crazy when done right a Gmod map has the power to mess with your mind and genuinely creep you out at times. The old "retro realism" from the more gritter source games like Half-Life 2 makes it all the more uncanny when you look back at them considering they haven't aged too well, not horribly bad by any means but it's in this weird grey area where everything just becomes a little too uncomfortable, especially when a lot of Gmod maps have these open empty spaces inside buildings.

I think the gun feeling comes from the fact that in video games if you don't have a weapon you feel way more vulnerable but if you do you know in the back of your mind that you can overcome whatever you're facing that or maybe it's a part of human nature where having a weapon gives you focus in tense situations.

Yeah, the hope of being able to defend yourself is more comforting than only having running away as your lifeline in case a danger presents itself.
@Nooke95
@Nooke95 3 жыл бұрын
Might also relate to solving the ambiguity that fear often stems from: with a gun in hand, you're portraying the actions of someone ready to defend themselves in dangerous territory. In other words, no weapon makes it unclear whether the area is safe or unsafe, while a weapon makes it certain to be unsafe. And so, the lessening of tension is from your brain no longer having to be on edge to determine which scenario out of the two is more likely.

This also reminds me of the book, Robert A. Heinlein's "Tunnel in the Sky". At the start of the adventure, a few schools of young adults are completing their interplanetary survival test, in which they will teleport to another planet and must survive for 2 weeks while travelling to a separate teleport site to return. (I think it was 2 weeks?) The person we're following is strongly recommended not to take a firearm with them by their mentor, advice which they begrudgingly follow, and upon reaching the planet they are terrified and being as sneaky as possible because of it. But they did reasonably well to survive. Had they brought a firearm, they might have confronted the unknown instead, or at least not have paid as much attention to covering their tracks, and got themselves killed. Someone else sure did. Also the warning about the nasty creature on the planet, the 'Stobor' was a nice touch. Definitely a good read.

Doesn’t apply just to video games, I can be going about my day normally with no worry, arm brushes the front of my leg or inside my jacket and doesn’t feel that concealed holster, instant panic, then again that could be because I live in a dried up factory town where the factory has been closed for about 20 years, population is only around 2,000 but there’s 5 known gangs operating in the area including Bloods, Cripps, and MS13, I generally carry everywhere I go, keep about 100 rounds of spare ammo in my vehicle, a shotgun under the backseat, and a 8.5 inch AR pistol in 300blk tucked between my passenger seat and my console.

1:16:18 You might be thinking of Megalophobia, which is a fear of massive things. Fog isn't inherent to the fear, but many examples of Megalophobic images contain fog due to its ability to imply even greater size than is already apparent. Honestly, as another viewer pointed out already, thats mostly due to the fear of the unknown. A lot of horror games play with it only to some degree where it cant fully become fear of the unknown but instead fear of being helpless. Both are very similar but only one can truly terrify you. In NH2 you are at first somewhat helpless but the situations arent impossible to be survived. Then later you get a gun and... yea the horror part is kinda out of the window by that point. Then lets take Outlast and Outlast 2 for example as well where you cant fight back at all. You are helpless but you somewhat know whats coming for you. Its horrifying till you know you can hide and they cant get you. But take an empty city, an eerie athmosphere and the background knowledge of a plague having happened of likely the zombie kind? Who knows what could lurk behind the next tree, car or door. You dont, I dont, he doesnt, no one does. AND THAT is the beauty of fear of the unknown. The fact that not a single one of us will know whats coming next. And I HATE IT xD

Usually RP maps don't have any major jumpscares or triggered events, if they do it's mostly in easter eggs. This is meant to be played on an RP server, and having triggered events round about isn't going to do well on a server. However, the ambiance is great in this one. Really gives you the heebie jeebies.

The different inspirations and vibes this map had in it's creation is truly interesting. Out in the (I guess) country side across from the bridge everything just has such a Day Z feeling crossed a tiny bit with Alan Wake. The geography of the area and the eastern European assets like the trains just makes it feel ripped right out of Stalker through and through. Then though once you get to the city everything is much more Left 4 Dead feeling with a very American styled city in complete chaos the way Left 4 Dead levels portray that exact disarray, and frankly the reused Left 4 Dead assets only adds to this. But then once you have the map figured out out of nowhere the map just goes fully Silent Hill in places like the morgue, the underground, the apartments, and the church with insane metallic architecture and rusting on everything that is completely ripped out of the otherworld while the church and apartments feel like something in the fog world. It's just so out of nowhere given the rest of the normal-ish map.

Something that really gets me in creepy settings like this is ambiance with low, pulsing bass drones, like in the facility around 31:40 onwards. Especially if it sounds vaguely music-like, but not entirely - sort of a phonic uncanny valley effect, also giving off a feeling like the place you're in is somehow alive, and you're hearing the beating of some incomprehensible heart it might have.

@9:28 I think it's that dingy shade of yellow. As put by 'The Dungeon Alphabet' "In those dank catacombs, yellows come not in bright, cheerful hues, but in faded tinctures of age and rot. It is a sickly shade, calling to mind craven fear, shattering madness, and the unstoppable march of the grave." Ever since I read that entry I notice those darker shades of yellow in all sorts of horror works, from the backrooms to that scene in Insidious Ch 2 where they find the secret room with all the corpses. Dingy yellow is just this unsettling color of decrepitude and forgotten spaces, its a color I can smell; dusty and musty like an old library or bookstore.

I've had a pretty nice and calm day, but after just kinda existing in this space virtually for a while I've come away feeling kinda chilly, and with that kinda lonesome melancholy feeling you get when it gets more autumnal outside. Ross Scott, the man behind Freeman's Mind, once did a video describing a piece of software he considered his 'dream program'. Essentially, just a suite of software that could convert a 3D space from any game into a generic engine in a way that means it will always be accessible, particularly for online games that rely on a central server. Even ignoring the potential for archival purposes, I really wish we had something like that solely for the potential worlds we could explore in VR. The idea of strolling through something like The Silent Cartographer or the Library from Halo alone would get me to spend a LOT of money.

It will run 4k textures, run VR, uses hyperdynamic lighting, is the founder of HDR, and HL2 Lost Coast SHIPPED WITH RAY TRACING in 2005 (before ray tracing was truly implemented into HL2 for EP1. it in itself is an enigma. its a game, but its able to play 4k textures, and you can remake full on MW2 scenarios. why is this surprising? there is no game out there at Gmod's level of content, community, and 3rd party deving.

In this map I feel like the virus would be a cover up for what truly happened since that cavern looked like it was abandoned or the entrance to that underground cavern was purposely blown up to keep something in. Soon something escaped through the morge killing and causing havoc in the city. The evacuation was planned but failed as the bridges were still down connecting to the city letting whatever was in the cavern escape to the open areas killing off the people. The military was active and either killed,captured, or had a protical to destroy the town/city access to the outside world, the city/town was classified as closed down due to a virus or plague and they used that as a cover up, the beast would probably still be around mimicking the crow or the sounds being echoed in the cavern, haunting and torturing the player with sounds like the "Help" from the beginning in the video. Noone survived due to the beast killing everything and the military blew up the tunnels so the beast doesn't leave the area. That is what I believe happened in this city/town and the creator said that to give an illusion of false relief and emptiness.
