Do you need to go and live in another country to learn a foreign language fluently? Or perhaps you need to at least spend extensive periods of time there to get proper language immersion?
Well, the answer to both is a resounding NO 😀
In today's episode we'll talk about why you don't need to live in a country where the language you're learning is spoken to learn it fluently. I'll tell you a few good stories from my own experiences, and also share the things you need to be successful if you can't learn your foreign language abroad!

As someone who has learned English in Mexico, I can confirm than you don't need to live in a country where your target language is spoken, however, my listening and speaking skills improve a lot more when I worked in a bilingual call center, where I was exposed to English 9hours+ a day Full immersion is not necessary, but as I said, it can be really useful for an intermediate-advanced learner.

Que votre café soit toujours délicieux et votre tasse pleine! Happy Monday, @RobinMacPherson with all this wonderful talk about tools to achieve fluency today. You got me thinking....how do you decide how far in fluency you want to go with a language when goal setting, and how do differing goals affect your study habits or strategies? Merci beaucoup pour tout l'energie et tout l'aide.

Insightful video; thanks! I normally travel/live abroad three months every summer. However, because of Covid travel restrictions, I'm staying home this year. I actually think my foreign language acquisition is faster at home. As you say, it's all about having the right resources; most of which are readily available on the internet if you look for them. I appreciate that your videos routinely blow up language learning myths!

OMG! That's so true!! I'm currently living in Taiwan, and honestly, I don't need to be fluent at all to get by. I just need to repeat the same phrases over and over again. Getting over the beginner level was excruciatingly hard, but now that I'm at an intermediate level where I can communicate a lot more effectively, I can see that it benefits our (my husband and I) life here in Taiwan in a lot more meaningful (and of course useful) way. :)

I live in Los Angeles, CA.. I’m studying French. I use Duolingo, Easy Languages, KZbin, Netflix, reading young Adult novels ( in French) I go to French conversations meetups with French language learners and my favorite tool italki.com. To help me in my journey to reach C1 in French! Just doing that I’ve noticed a huge improvement in my language learning.

Please make a video detailing how you approach languages such as Hebrew, Arabic, Persian, Mandarin, Japanese - languages where reading is extremely difficult for beginners/intermediates due to either lack of vowels or lack of alphabet.

Totally agree... I've never been able to learn a language IN the country I live. Always somewhere else. I just hate doing something just because I HAVE TO... But once you have learned it, then it could in fact be helpful

Cardinal Giuseppe Mezzofanti, one of the greatest hyperglots of all time, learned to speak 38 languages fluently without ever setting foot outside of Italy. He was born in 1774. Remember that, during that era, the abundance of language learning resources and opportunities that we now have today thanks to the internet didn't exist.

Funny. I had the same experience with Portuguese while studying in Portugal. It wasn’t until I left the country that I actually perfected it. I will say, though, that the brain must’ve been processing all the input from Portugal subconsciously because I vividly recall moments of mysterious eurekas, kind of linguistic deja vus. It’s also interesting that I can speak Portuguese from Portugal while producing Brazilian sounds in fluent speech is a challenge to me.

I also have the experience of spending a year in Germany and ending up learning much more english than german because my colleagues werre all speaking english, and because my german level was not high enough to be able to talk or understand from context. I should have started from the basics and I did not have the time to do that. I learned "supermarket german" which is that oignons are zwiebeln, and that's pretty much it. Now I would like to go back to speaking german So yeah, it's probably more valuable to immerse yourself in the language once you have achieved a level that allows you to have basic conversations already. For me at least. I feel the same as you do, you feel the pressure to get the phrases you need and don't feel like actually learning

I chose my first second language precisely because I had nobody to speak it with! It meant I didn't have to deal with the stress of struggling to communicate, which I probably would have found mortifying at the time.

Immersion should be defined separate from travelling abroad. You can still immerse per se at home etc. (i.e. immersion learning without travelling to target language country).

I specified in the video, "in-country mass immersion", for example, and also said at 10:58 as another example that "you can create unbelievably immersive experiences". Given that the title of the video is regarding learning without going to the country, I think this is quite clear. I also have made quite a few videos where I strongly encourage and assure people that they can accomplish immersion at home. I'm a huge proponent of creating immersive environments outside of a country where the language is spoken and also discussing finer nuances of these approaches. Here are a couple of examples: How To Create A Language Immersion Bubble: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nGfKi3-vr8mEgpY How To Immerse Yourself In A Language At Home: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3u8hKWFoMqtjtE
