This video is at least 4 years old. And that library if you walk to it. Be careful of the homeless shelter across the street. Bums in every corner . And nasty garbage everywhere. And most of the computers if you dare go, are just adult children escaping responsibilities by playing games on the computer. Most ppl are accessing the computers for junk. It’s a lost world in there. Literally the biggest part of zombieland in Hamilton is directly out front of that glass building. Day or night! Hamilton house pricing is no place to start a family anymore. Hamilton is complete trash. I’m trying to escape. But it’s much easier said then done. Ppl living in tents at an all time high. All across Hamilton. Place is a mess. Gotta bring back small business. Looser controls. Cheaper permits to build stuff on your own property for Christ sakes. Tax reform. And government spending reform. And let ppl work again without both hands in the pocket and you’ll have a city again. But we have a corrupted government. So forget about it. Those are changes that cannot be made without what?!!! A much needed revolt!!! But that won’t happen either because they got us fighting eachother so divided. They have it all figured out. We are sheep. Turning into zombies. We better hurry before it’s too late!

This video is a glimpse of Hamilton before it recently fell on its face. This is not what Hamilton currently is. You don't see the people struggling on the streets, the garbage and borded up businesses. Hamilton is going through some deep growing pains right now. I just don't know if I'll still be living here when the city truly blossoms again. Always rooting for you Steel City!

This may be a few years old. In 2024, there are a number of challenges faced by those living in Hamilton. One of the greatest is the cost of living. Housing is very expensive whether you want to rent of buy. Food is expensive as is gas for the car. Hamilton has become an expensive place to live partly due to commuter workers from out of town. They have driven up costs of living in the city. Trudeau's immigration policy also did not help. He opened the doors to people wanting a better life and who could fill job gaps in the economy. What he did not anticipate is the housing shortage in Hamilton. Hamilton has a much more visible homelessness problem than five years ago. There are tent cities in almost every city park. The mayor's solution is to give amnesty to those in tent cities, rather than deal with the real issues of dealing with the issues surrounding homelessness and a need for affordable housing. As for work, art is not going to solve the city's issue with loss of a once thriving steel city. The majority of people commute to work, which poses challenges of it own. And the wages paid do not keep up with inflation. So many people in Hamilton who are employed find themselves broke and struggling to make ends meet. Many jobs are part-time, with substandard wages. For those with full-time jobs, many are low wages when compared with previous generations and adjusted for inflation. As for the Farmer's Market and Central Library, many people no longer go there. COVID hours did not help. But since full reopening, many vendors at the market do not see the same of business they once had. The Central Library has had recent challenges in 2024 with the digital virus attack, closing many services. People were also scared away by the acts of violence from street people using the library. Mark at Dr. Disc is correct on his assessment of the downtown core back in the early 1990s. It was a nasty place with boarded up storefronts and lots of crime. Much of the businesses your see in 2024 helped bring more people downtown, as did Supercrawl Festival in September each year. But much more is needed. The downtown core still has an image problem. The so-called "Ambitious City" needs so much more to turn itself around.

Housing is expensive??? Here is why!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I get so angry when I hear about affordable housing.....The city of Hamilton Charges $100,000 in development charges for each new detached or semi detached homes built. Then there is 13% on HST on ALL the building materials and labour charges in constructing a house. On a $500,000 house that is about $75,000.....then the builder has to make a profit....and when you buy the house you pay about $20,000 in land transfer tax....and then you pay property taxes for as long as you own the house. So before you even put the key in the front door, you're paying $200,000 just in taxes!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is why housing is not affordable......we are taxed to death!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The library smells like ass and the market hours change constantly, and the “farmers” are mostly re-sellers who bring stuff from the Toronto Food terminal. Just across from the library is a men’s shelter where scores of people high on fentanyl scare the beejeebies out of anybody walking by. People on scooters, bikes and motorized wheelchairs beep at you to move the eff out of he way when you try to walk on any sidewalk. The entire city has turned into a nightmare. It used to be a beautiful clean city but now it is a dystopian hellscape to escape from.

This makes my head hurt. Once upon a time you could get anywhere in the city by car within 15 minutes vs an hour+ by bus. Just driving down James St to go up the hill takes 15 minutes depending on the time of day. West Harbour development? I can walk down the road and show you all they did was level the land, pave roads that lead to nowhere (all these squares make a circle) and built a stage. No housing, no shops. Just roads, stop signs and a stage. I rarely spend any time downtown even though I live so close. My trips to downtown are for the movie theatre. I might visit a restaurant 2 or 3 times a year probably on King William and that’s it. 99% of the time if I’m driving through downtown I’m either heading up the mountain or on my way home. There’s virtually nothing left for me downtown. And when it comes to those outside the core they’re driving in. If it’s not car friendly with parking they’re not coming. Part of what killed downtown was Center Mall and Lime Ridge Mall. It eliminated the need to go downtown and had free parking. The video also forgot to mention that King and Main St are arterial roads leading both on and off highway 403. King St is also known as Highway 8 so it makes sense as to why it’s as wide as it is but they also neglected the fact that it is restricted to 2 lanes at King and Wellington St. And correct me if I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure the bikes have been replaced with scooters. I don’t really see anyone riding the bike rentals anymore. Oh and the renovation of the Farmers Market resulted in less space for vendors. 2/3 the space I believe. I could be wrong on that figure but I know it was less. A lot of people were pissed at the time.

It's nice to see you pay attention to Hamilton, and also address generational poverty.... but you make it look like the solution will be community gardens and picnics. Wow, so pleased you thought to cover this city. I'm a Torontonian but been pulling for Hamilton for a very long time. It's got so many things going for it and confident it will prosper again. Like many Canadian cities, one of the biggest obstacles to Hamilton blossoming is that it's a city built for cars instead of people. Maybe the central city needs to separate from the city; or de-amalgamate so suburbanites stop blocking every attempt to un-do all the damage done to the city by the car.

First thing that stood out was the guy saying the one way streets was a body blow. The body blow was converting them to 2 way streets to absolute gridlock. Anyone who knows Hamilton, knows the one way system was PERFECT for the city. Cannon street and Wilson street both went opposite ways. Then king street and main street went opposite ways. Facilitating traffic perfectly. If you needed to get across the city quicker, there is Burlington street and the LINC. Trying to say turning it to 2way would help for business is false. People go to shop if they want to, it doesn’t make people driving in gridlock say “hey I feel like shopping now”. Also another lie is the woman who represents the biking around Hamilton saying people downtown want it, is a lie, many people do not care for biking and it only is good for the smaller demographic of bikers in the city. The accidents are not due to the one way streets either. It’s the ignorant pedestrian who just hop out in the street to cross. Obviously there is many driver error accidents but let’s put blame on the people as well. And let’s not ignore the problem and the BIGGEST reason people don’t like going downtown and that is the drug addicts and homeless people who create a dangerous atmosphere for the citizens. But the city won’t do anything about that. I’m quite surprised how these “professionals “ who design the city are so ignorant to what makes the city work and facilitate properly.

Urban Hamilton was fine until the factories started closing and the people making money moved out of the core... average household income is what makes for a vibrant downtown. since everyone with money moved out of the core and traffic efforts have made it difficult to navigate to and through downtown the people with the money to support shops, and restaurants etc... don't go downtown... until they can get people with money to live there it will be what it is forever...PS we owned a business downtown for 10 years, 2009 to 2018 and moved out because of bus lanes and gridlock caused by bike lanes and 2 way streets, removal of parking spaces. Made it difficult for suburbanites to want to go downtown.... and there just isnt enough money from local residents to support all the "nice things"... that makes a community.... haven't even talked about homeless drugs and crime... I can go on for hours ... I lived in a thriving core when I was a kid but watched it decay since the late eighties and it has been truly sad to exoerience

Not so mon ami, I love walkable areas and entertainment districts they make cities awesome... however in order to have nice things you need people with money to spend in these areas .. there can be a transition period and strategic approach. You can't immediately bite the hands that feed vibrant areas. Unfortunately Hamilton has been grossly mismanaged. For those who did not have the fortune of experiencing a vibrant core in the 70s and 80s it's hard to understand my perspective. During those decades Hamilton had 1 way streets a vibrant Jackson square and Gore park, Barton had alot more life, We had ELECTRIC buses downtown which I was a transit rider for the first 22 years of my life. They were whisper quiet and we got rid of that infrastructure. The original Gore park was amazing. Attended public bathrooms, almost no homelessnes. The farmers market was vibrant *my grandmother would get a fresh chicken after work, we'd go to Kresges get fries at the lunch counter and take the bus to her house in the North End.... so on and so on... Hamilton has made disastrous planning decisions, we have BILLIONs of $$ spent downtown in the last 15 years and it is worse today than ever... I believe (open to being educated) the main problem is affordability, which affects discretionary spending, and the people with the means to support all of the business required are being choked out and by senseless gridlock... and crime and homelessness. It's just not pleasant to spend time downtown. And you have now lost a generation of people who have not and do not want to go... James, Locke st, Ottawa Streets are good examples of 2 way traffic that makes sense.... but choking of main and king willnjust further deter "outsiders" from even attempting. Until the population density and average household incomes in the core are well above the cost of living we cannot expect improvement... "If you build it they will come" is a fallacy. I appreciate the dialogue, keep your mind and heart open

Hamilton is a Fantastic City. Unfortunately the Host, and the Architect have a low level understanding of the City. So when they say something it sounds like they are ignorant about the city. Oeople are driving those cars so its weird to say that people, and Cars are separate things. We don’t need to slow down the main arteries making traffic pile up and increasing pollution, frustration, and causing pote tial safety issues. No many use the Bike Lanes. They are barely used. Mostly DUI’s Bikers, Teenagers, or people who can’t afford cars. Cyclist who do use it for cycling don’t use it correctly, they Blow Stop Signs, and Red Lights, or ride on the Sidewalks when it suits them, and quite often cross over multiple lanes causing safety issues. There is plenty of streets for pedestrians, with lots of shopping, and events. Our Bus Routes are great for this. Humans are not perfect so increasing the chance for accidents is not a good idea. Super propagandist feel to this video. Whether that’s true or not, I couldn’t get past it. The Cylists trying to increase Bike Lanes are so Focused on putting Citizens out of Jobs by making Enviromental Claims, and complaining about the Vehicles who the road is made for. Most times its found they embellish what Impact is happening to suit themselves in a very self-centered, and power grabbing way. There is so many safe areas for cycling, I can’t imagine getting yourself to a state where you could need more. Getting to an up-roar when they want to cause issues for people who have to travel across the ciry for work. When City council De-Synced the lights downtown, my commute near doubled depending on how much traffic there was. This really comes off as a hippie cyclist, propaganda video with no sense of Hamiltonians. Whether that was i tentional or not, it doesn’t feel authentic at all.

I can't disagree more with this interpretation of the bike lanes issue. There are many good not arterial roads that make great cycle routes. Cannon Street in particular should never be a contender for bike lanes. In that example, the houses on either side are serviced by telcoms from the backyard plant and the blocks are long. How would you like to carry a 28ft extension ladder across the street when you have either no parking on one side, or you have to block the bike lane. There are a lot of other roads to use for bike traffic. Then, you have this idea that making King St and Main St back to two directional traffic is again is neglecting the fact that it only takes a little bit of looking to see, where would you redirect that traffic? Main St and King St is provincial HWY 8. That is what it is. You can't redirect that traffic further south or north. They connect very well to the 403 and every business downtown and central Hamilton depends on them. This is agenda driven analysis that ignores the fact that there are great cycle routes around almost all of these obstacles that don't need to slow down vehicles that are travelling though to service the cities' businesses and residents. Intelligent cyclists (I rode my bike down there for 10 years and about to again - also through downtown Vancouver) have side streets and options that could be enhanced, and be safer and more productive for everyone.

Great video. You nailed a lot of truths, even with some years-old info :)

Most people loved the one way streets. They turned James and John back into 2-way and the traffic is now insane. Two lanes of the four on James are taken up by trucks servicing stores, the southbound lanes have buses weaving in and out and stopping. At rush hour it is backed up insanely, with cars getting caught in the intersections blocking them, everyone honking. Not good for pedestrians trying to cross those roads. Now try to imagine roadworks on these roads. Nowhere to divert traffic to. The reason people don't go downtown has NOTHING to do with one way streets or speed, so making traffic slower won't help. A) It's parking. What little there is is so expensive per hour it's better to buy an all day parking pass. Who wants to pay all day for a 15-20 minute stop? B) The same corrupt middle class politicians and activists who want to tear up the roads and make them 2way with bike lanes also love the drug destigmatization and safe supply that has exploded drug use and tent cities. They and their supporters tend to also be the NIMBYs who block industry and housing development, especially social housing near their own homes.

What garbage - was this sponsored by the woke anti-car lobby! Doug F should speed up his anti-bike lane campaign. I ignore the elderly eh?

I like the better bike paths but we also need travel road from one end of the city, to the other. And you have to have that. The slower you make it and stopping every light, helps no one for work and shopping. You drive and lots of homeless people walk out in front of you .. they won't go to a crossing as it's too far .. especially closed to West end. I have ladies with buggies do it 🙄 You need traffic flow plus safe areas to cross and Hamilton can't figure that out. First I have heard of McQueston and that is a great thing they are doing. And the lane way house is also a great idea. The waterfront is a joke ... taking away and less parking for visitors (where people could go to enjoy waterfront, if they don't live there.. we won't be able to) and building lots of condos.. no one wants all those condos at the waterfrontso I hope it looks good. But u challenged them to have the parking .. we lose free parking, this I know, already. I have spent lots of time down pier 4 and 8 and I could not have done it without free parking and car access, for all the time i spent there. It is the people that live in Hamilton and outskirts I care more about ...and we are losing all of that, for us. But definitely love changes around Dr Disk and watched a few bands on the rooftop. No need to attack me.. I am allowed my opinion.
