An excellent video. I love it for the knowledge it shares and as a means of practising listening. Though, it is a bit too fast for my non-native ears. Many thanks, once again.

Watching this while taking a break from writing a programming language parser. How fitting.
@thelingspace9 жыл бұрын
+Sekai Kyoretsuna Haha, yeah, I can see how that'd be fitting. I don't know much about those, though! I'd be interested in hearing how they work, like how similar or different they may be. Or maybe I should go look some stuff up. ^_^
@localatticus44839 жыл бұрын
+The Ling Space | If you think you'd be at all interested, I'd highly recommend it. Even if you never work on anything of the sort, you'll still be learning something (and a cool something, at that). At a high level they're pretty similar to how we parse language. It first breaks the text into recognizable words (and other symbols) called tokens (which is technically not actually part of the parsing process, but it's important). Once it knows what it's trying to parse, it just scans down the line and choosing paths to take. Depending on what you want to parse, back-tracking may or may not exist in the parser. In cases where you don't you get much more strict rules on how paths are traversed, I guess similar to how in English sentences starting with 'would' or 'why' are assumed to be questions.
@thelingspace9 жыл бұрын
+Sekai Kyoretsuna That actually does sound quite interesting! I'll try to find some stuff to try. And it'll probably help me think more about natural language parsers, too. Of course, we still need backtracking in sentences that look like they're questions, or things can still get confused. But it's true that we do a lot of predicting about what's coming up, as well; we'll come back to talk about that more in a future episode. ^_^

Great video! I'd heard about garden path sentences before, and it seems pretty reasonable why you'd have to think twice to understand them. The one about the captain that everyone trusted really caught me off guard, though; I didn't even figure out the second meaning until you pointed it out!
@thelingspace9 жыл бұрын
+llproductions2006 Yeah, some of these are really tricky! The more that you study these kinds of sentences, the easier it is to spot the ambiguities. But without that, I doubt I'd spot nearly as many as I do, either. ^_^

Zoe told the captain that everyone trusted the story. Yes there are two meanings possible. However, the speaker would pronounce the sentences differently. I doubt the listener would be confused. If I'm talked about a trusted captain, I'd emphasize "trusted" differently and and paise before continuing. Is this pause the time it takes the parser to find the next node up in the tree to connect "the story" to?
