Designers get ideas from what the women are actually wearing or doing, depending on where you live. I've never thought of myself as a trendsetter, but this happened to me 2 seasons in a row in my late teens in Brooklyn: it used to be no one wore blue and green together. One spring I decided to put a navy blue silk blouse with a kelly green pencil skirt and navy accessories. I went into one of the better stores on Kings Highway, and 2 days later they were featuring that same combination in their display window...3 outfits. And then a couple of other stores followed suit a couple of days later. September rolled around. Plum and baby blue just weren't done together. I had a powder blue wool pencil skirt and a plum sleeveless sweater (they used to call them a "shell;" I have no idea why. Same thing happened. I don't feel anyone plagiarized me. I think a couple of window dressers saw a combination that worked and they used it too. Why not?
