This oral history was filmed by Jonas Spriestersbach in December 2022 at Takashi Homma’s studio in Tokyo. It is part of the CCA project The Lives of Documents-Photography as Project, an open reflection on how past and contemporary image-making practices serve as critical tools to read our built environment and design today’s world. Featuring Homma’s projects New Waves (2000) and Mushrooms (2011).
Takashi Homma (b. 1962, Tokyo, Japan - lives and works in Tokyo, Japan) started his career in advertising and fashion photography in Japan and London. Referring to his photographic approach as “new documentary,” he captures subjects in an unemotional and timeless manner to create a feeling of distance between image and viewer. Homma’s work reflects on death, birth, youth, and changes in Japanese society across a limited set of subjects that he frequently revisits waves, mushrooms, portraits, Tokyo.
