I just wanted to post that this is Monk reading Mary Lou Williams arrangement of this tune. Mary recorded it with her trio between 1945-47.

Great ! . Barry Harris used to play this tape all the time some years ago. Monk sounds inspired and in a good shape physically. Thanks!!

Thank you SO much for posting this. Monk is my favorite. Can't tell you all the things going through my mind listening to this, but my heart was really feeling it. Monk's solo piano really gives you the essence of this beautiful man. Reminds me a little of the 25 min. version of Round Midnight where he was also working things out. You made my day with this one. Thanks again.

My favourite bit is at around 5:10, when Monk plays out of time, and explores the range of the instrument. So beautiful !!!

@barrtok Not really, I am a pianist and I have played at many of the same places Barry did, including his club and spend some time with him and Clifford Jordan(who I used to work with) and that's when I heard the tape. I tried to take some lessons from Barry, but he just wouldn't accept private students. I went to his class but didn't learn anything new--it was mainly him talking to his students on different subjects--great, but I felt I needed more, so I didn't continue. Probably, my loss.

@vova47 Great to know. You used to work/tour/study with Barry Harris?

@WAMEDJO he was heavily influenced by earlier stride pianists such as art tatum, fats waller, and james p johnson, and even some classical pianists. Gotta love monk's take on stride.
