Buddy’s backing musicians here are guitarist Steve Busfield and bassist Roland Robinson, both formerly of the hard rock band “Steel”, who released their self-titled LP in 1971 on Epic with Jimi Hendrix's sound engineer, Eddie Kramer, producing. In addition to Busfield and Robinson, the members of Steel were keyboardist/vocalist Duane Hitchings, drummer Jerry Norris, and lead/backing vocalist Carl Sims. Hitchings was also a member of the Buddy Miles Express, and Roland Robinson, in addition to working with Norris as session musicians for the Stax label, jammed with Hendrix (he is credited on the Hendrix “Nine To The Universe” album published in 1980). Hitchings, Robinson and Norris also joined guitarist Mike Pinera in a short-lived reformed version of the band Cactus for the 1973 album “Son Of Cactus”. Hitchings and Robinson would also go on to write the hit song “Infatuation” for Rod Stewart.

In the early 1970's, Buddy Miles came to town (Spokane, Wa) and played at the Kennedy Pavilion located on the Gonzaga University campus. I and my Bass player had no money so we stood by the back doors where right on the other side, the stage was set up. There was a break between bands and what do you know, The door opened up and out stepped Buddy Miles in his red white and blue flag leather jacket. Maybe for some fresh air before playing or maybe to have a smoke. He asked us what we were doing and we told him we were just listening to the bands from outside. He said, come on in and we suddenly had front row privilege right up against the very front of the stage. At the end of the show, someone else sat at the drums and he grabbed an old gold top Les Paul guitar and played a song and went in to a solo. He was slinging it hard and waving his head back and forth while playing and we actually got hit with some saliva or sweat flying off of him, not sure which. After the show ended, we stepped up on to the stage and we gave to him our thank you's and exchanged hugs with him. It was a different time and the big stars were still approachable. We also spent some time in a trailer behind a local night club smoking the bad stuff with Lydia Pense of Cold Blood, just her and us. It was surreal. What great memories.

I had the 8 track in the 1970s. Then one day in the late 1980s we were doing a basement video for MTV at my recording studio. The band and tons of hot girls and in walks Buddy Miles. He heard what we were doing and came by. He hands me a cassette of his new project and as I'm playing it I say who is singing ? He says him. The vocal sounds like Steve Perry. I said no way. He turns down the studio monitors and proceeds to sing a capella. Just like Steve Perry. Blew my mind. Then we went into the studio where i played drums and my friend who was a killer guitar player jammed with Buddy and he played Bass guitar. What an incredible memory.

Now that a drummer, accomplishes MUCH with less, not 50 million drums, what does Buddy Miles have here a 5 piece drum set if I’m not mistaken, love his drumming here those singles that he did, man were they smooth and clean. Check out Erykah Badu, Mononeon, Cory Henry, Janelle Monae, Esperanza Spalding, Knower, Thundercat, Vulfpeck, Cory Wong, Snarky Puppy, Larnell Lewis, The Fearless Flyers, Jacob Collier, Domi and JD Beck, Knower/Louis Cole, the list goes on, it's just mainstream media sucks for great music, but even someone like Adele is pretty awesome and she's on top of the world.

This is a gift from God. There is no other decent live recording of Buddy performing this song. There's a Band of Gypsys version but the quality sucks. This is the first song I learned for my first band. I was about 12. It's still one of the most kick-ass songs ever written. Thanks Midnight Special.

@@Da_Publick I was 12 or so and my guitar teacher asked me if I wanted to come watch his band rehearse in his parent's basement. He wasn't that old either - maybe 18 or 19. That was the first song they played and it blew me away. Live music. I'd never heard anything like it on a record player. I remember he had this weird-looking Yamaha amp that was shaped like a wedge. I found out later it was a Yamaha TA-60. I didn't go with that. I went with what the Beatles used - a Vov AC30. I had the chrome stand and everything. Anyways, the next day I got some school buddies together and we started a band and Them Changes was the reason why. I bet there's never been another band in history that played Buddy Miles and also played the Monkees, "Not Your Stepping Stone." Hey, we were young. 😂

Besides founding bands like Electric Flag and the Buddy Miles Express, he did amazing work with Santana and Jimi Hendrix with "Band Of Gypsys" (which covered this song) and also on the Electric Ladyland" LP...his shuffle is legendary, check out "Rainy Day Dream Away/Still Rainin' Still Dreamin", you won't be disappointed.
