Not only in the 1950s but definitely one of the greatest sci-fi classics of all time. Big stars during that era and the story line not unbelievable, it could be possible. I watch this about once every year, never get tired of it. I could imagine if they tried to produce an up to date remake of this film, it would be all computer graphics with unconvincing acting, the magical atmosphere would not be there.

bugutwo, I agree this is one of the best sci-fi movies ever! I was 2 years old, but saw this many times on television later. And I agree that a modern remake just wouldn't be the same. There were so many great science fiction movies made back in the 50's and 60's. Also the Twilight Zone! One of my favorite old shows.

My man James Whitmore doesn't go anywhere without a tommy gun! Later he has the best line in the movie, deep within the ant tunnels. When Edmund Gwenn observes that the nest is cemented with saliva, he says, "Yeah, spit's all that's holding me together right now, too."

You always notice one thing about real-life ants: *THEY MOVE FAST!* That's the only problem I have with this movie, but *hey!* it's 50 years old. (Spiders move fast, too...)
@michaelterrazas3125
@michaelterrazas3125 2 жыл бұрын
I have a theory on that. I think the reason it couldn't move so fast because their size is not natural and probably takes a toll on them because of their exo skeleton it's not like millions of years ago where they can grow to large size because back then there was much more oxygen more potent but like I said it's a theory

One thing about giant bug movies that always niddles me. Their cardiovascular systems would make them collapse under their own weight. Insects don't have lungs and breathe through their skin. Large insects are naturally slow because if they went any faster they would suffocate. See bird eating spiders. I know suspension of belief is needed here but that's always in the back of my head. Although seeing as this is the grandaddy of all scary bug movies I suppose it's not too shabby all things considered.
@syphonfilter8372
@syphonfilter8372 9 жыл бұрын
Simple explanation- they developed lungs like in the film Mimic. Yeah, the scale to size thing with bugs gets me too but it's sci-fi.

***** Yeah, it bugs me. Buzz is, it's a cult film that will probably get a remake someday. That's pretty fly. My aunt ( don't worry, she's not a WASP) loved this film as a kid back then and I loved watchin it with her as a kid. She said if there's a remake, she'll jump in her V-Beetle and we'll be the first ones there. If it's a bad one, we can always flea the theater.
@WitheringintheDark
@WitheringintheDark 9 жыл бұрын
Nikki Lee The issues with their cardiovascular system are valid, but if giant bugs would collapse, i'd really like the explanation for 50 ton dinosaurs walking around and not collapsing and dying, because due to fossil evidence we know they existed, and yet by the same metric applied to these ants, they Shouldn't have.
@SavagePassion666
@SavagePassion666 9 жыл бұрын
WitheringintheDark The atmosphere today is a lot less oxygen rich than that of prehistoric times. In fact giant bugs did at one point exist 300 million years ago because the amount of oxygen present could support their growth. Same with the dinosaurs I expect.
@WitheringintheDark
@WitheringintheDark 9 жыл бұрын
Nikki Lee Oxygen only helps bugs due to their cardiovascular system, and even then, they were only a couple pounds heavier than the biggest of today. A higher oxygen atmosphere will not magically alleviate the forces of gravity acting upon a 50 ton dinosaur.
